And when the English bowlers comes out to bowl, it is not going to be easy. I have been to Chennai once, and the weather is really challenging. At this time of the year, it can be really hot and humid. It will be impossible for the pacers to put in more than 15 overs per day.
No wonder India is fielding spinners and just two fast bowlers, England played really well to score 263 runs on the first day even though they lost a couple of quick wickets. I thought India will keep on picking wickets but Joe Root and Dom Sibley rescued the innings and put England on a strong position and they still have Ben Stokes and Jos Buttler to bat and they can score well over 400 runs from a strong situation like they are in.

Half an hour back, England was having a solid advantage. Now the situation has turned upside down and India is at the top. But as long as Joe Root is there, I am not going to discount the chances for England. Let's not forget the fact that he is in such a terrific form. Last month, he scored 426 runs from two test matches in Sri Lanka (and picked up two wickets as well). This is his 100th test and I am expecting something special.

India needs to break this partnership between Root and Sibley. They both are playing well and if they continue like this then they will easily cross 350. They need another 200 runs on board and the way root is playing I do not think it will be a difficult task.

Both the Root and Sibley are very strong which Indians bowlers are trying their best to break the partnership, but their partnership will surely cross more than 350 runs easily on the Board, even Aswin cannot be able to control the flow of runs if they don't break the partnership means Indian batsmen might be in huge problems.

Edit
4 balls to go and first day of the tour belong to England.

ENG : 263

Don't be so fast. Dom Sibley trapped leg before by Jasprit Bumrah. He batted really well.. until now. Faced 285 balls (382 minutes), and stood like a rock while Joe Root piled up the runs from the other end. And he had to survive for just 4 more balls but he got out during the last over. If not for that wicket, England could have been well on top. But now it is once again, evenly poised.

England is heading towards a big score and the joke is that Ben Stokes hasn't yet come to bat. Joe Root scores another hundred, in his hundredth test. Dom Sibley is batting at 85, and he may get his hundred today as well. The Poms have really stepped up scoring rate, with 60 runs coming from the last 10 overs. The same Indian bowlers who looked lethal in Australia looks quite ordinary now. Perhaps the absence of Mohammad Shami is hurting them.
Hard day at the office for Indian bowlers but its marathon and not an sprinter so we shouldn't worry much. Both batsmen really batted well and Joe Root hardly took any risk except 1 shot in his inning. Pitch is flat and exceptionally well to bat on so can't be too hard on bowlers.

England should bat 2 full session and add 180-200 ish runs, if Stokes/Buttler clicks then may be 250-300 more. Anything in between 475 to 525 runs is good 1st inning score here.

And in Chittagong, Bangladesh is cruising towards a convincing victory against West Indies, as they are leading by 218 runs with 7 wickets to spare. This would mean that West Indies will finish at the bottom of the ICC World Test Championship.

@pakhitheboss even though England lost two wickets they’re yet very strong, and from what I’m seeing I won’t be surprised if they pose 600+ runs total on the board. I also wonder is it just me or others too are also starting to question what’s happening to famous Indian bowling line up, because it seems to me that they’re having no home advantage at this stage.

I am counting on his ton. England need big inning from him and at least 350-400 runs on the board otherwise Indians going to take away the game far from their reach.
-----
Meanwhile lost the another bet on Babar, Again. Safe to say no century for him in this series.

Nowadays most of the teams are dependent on one or two players. India is dependent on Virat Kohli (although the situation is changing), England is dependent on Joe Root/Ben Stokes, Pakistan is like one-man army of Babar Azam, Steve Smith/Marnus Labuschagne for Australia, Kane Williamson for New Zealand.etc. The problem is that the team morale goes down whenever these players get out for low scores.

And sad to see Pakistan wasting the recovery they made yesterday. Expected Babar Azam to make a century, but he got out for 77. Keshav Maharaj and Anrich Nortje have taken all the wickets in the innings till now. And the good news for South Africa is that George Linde seems to be fit again to bowl.

What have you done Rory Burns!! It was such a good start for him and he literally threw away his wicket. He's going to kick himself for all day.

Ashwin strikes ofc.

63/1

Still a good start for England. If they manage somewhere around 350, then they will be having a good chance of winning this match. Just now they lost their second wicket (Dan Lawrence out to Jasprit Bumrah). For England their chances will depend a lot on Dom Sibley and Joe Root. These two need to stick in and stay there at least till the end of the second session. The dismissal of Rory Burns was disappointing, as he was playing really well until then.
Very quickly England lost two wickets. The match now depends on Joe Root. If he can play a good inning, the England team will be able to collect a big total. If he gets out quickly, I think England will lose all their wickets before 250 runs. In the previous series, India defeated a giant team like Australia. Now their players are mentally cheerful.

Yes, this is confusing to know Ishant Sharma is being played in the first test instead of other younger ballers. I think the condition might suit his balling style, that might be the reason why he was chosen.
Ishant Sharma is a work horse and have enough experience playing in Indian condition while Jasprit Bumrah is making his debut playing Test in Indian conditions, so we can understand their logical conclusion in picking up the team. Shahbaz Nadeem was a surprise inclusion in the team as i did not see that coming but playing Ashwin and Washington Sundar in a team because it is their home ground Chennai and so they have the experience in bowling in that wicket.

Edit: Ashwin finally broken the partnership.

Lawrence is gone too but still Pitch is flat so 350-400 should be on the card, another 100 for Root?

The series between India and England started, India is playing with three spinners which was a surprise which means the pitch will start turning in the final days and luckily England won the toss and elected to bat first and they had a good start and if they can carry on with the momentum then it will be a great match and i expect England to be competitive as they had a great series against Sri Lanka.

Anyone watching the 1st match between India vs England?

England won the toss and elected to bat first and the pitch looks flat so going to be high scoring test? Smiley
Tosses are so crucial in test cricket and India had poor history win tosses in test cricket. There are too much of speculations and expectations should take a back seat, but I just watching it. India side needed Siraz, who basically led the bowling attack for 2 tests in Australia and England seriously missing Broad. BTW! Until now everything is going quite well, hopefully this game's gonna be a thriller.

Toss was going to be crucial and England won it. I was perplexed to find Shahbaz Nadeem in the playing XI. I didn't even knew that he was there in the squad. Also surprising to know that Ishant Sharma was preferred over some of the younger pacers. I don't even remember the last time I saw him in action (12 months ago, versus New Zealand perhaps?) and I have doubts regarding his fitness level.

~snip~
In recent press conference Kohli gave a thumbs up to Pant and hinted that he's going to play 1st match instead of Saha. He also going with Rohit-Gill, as expected. So looks like Batting line up is set with 6 specialists batsmen. Fight is for bowling slot, Ashwin, Ishant and Bumrah are fixed.

Sunder/Axar Patel (new name) Kuldeep are fighting for 2 slots if India going with 3 spinners.
I think Kuldeep or Sunder are much ahead in the race than Axar Patel. This is a turning track Axar Patel isn't the best turner. His strength is the variety that he has along with the pace. But yes putting Ashwin-sundar-Axar would give immense depth in batting to the team. It would be like playing with 9 batsmen or 10 batsmen considering even Bumrah can hit a 50 anytime  Grin . But yes top 6 are almost certain and I knew this right after the Aussie Tour. But I expect Rohit to hit some runs now. Considering the competition in the team he is no more a default choice in the playing XI for test matches. He was pretty ineffective in Australia too.
Lol Shahbaz Nadeem came out of nowhere and debuting ( Edit Correction : Not his first game) , he was not even in the squad. Thanks to injury of Axar, he got the chance. Don't know what's going to happen with Kuldeep if Nadeem performs.

Not Rohit but every player need to prove his worth in the team, competition become very tough in the Indian team due to last series win. No one can take their place for granted.
