For me the best coin to buy and hold for a long time is bnb, ada and uni I am sure that these coins really have potential and hopefully it will have even bigger projects which many investors will admire and buy more for their future others know that the aforementioned have come a long way if coins and improved even more so these coins deserve what price they are now and it is expected that the time will come to increase their price.

Three important things that must be considered before we invest in altcoins because we often make the wrong choice. I myself wouldn't invest in the wrong altcoins. As we all know that nowadays so many altcoins are committing fraud and this must be stopped. you have to pay attention to what I suggest

As it is customary, due diligence is often conducted by smart and inteligent investor before investing into any financial assets. That brings me to the two questions of this thread;

1. What is the best process to conduct a research about Altcoins to invest in?

2. Based on your opinion, what are the top 5 Altcoins i need to focused on and probably invest in?
First of all, if you do not read the whitepaper you will never know what is going on, you will blindly invest into something on "what people said" and that is not normal, you have to read the whitepaper, plus reading your first ever whitepaper you will not be good, understand only some of it and not all of it and you will not really catch anything, but when you read your 50th whitepaper you will start to understand what is going on and if they are copy of something else or if there is anything risky, or if they are too amateur and just there to steal money. This is why at the end of the day we are living in a situation where you will gradually get better but you need to spend time on it.

Secondly look at the team, not who they are but how they talk because if they are good people that will make you money you will understand it by how they work and how they respond to questions, people who get angry will always be scammers, and people who are decent will give you right answers and links to help you understand very politely.

Every investor has a different way of doing research on a project, but for me personally I usually do research by looking at the product, the whitepaper and the team behind the project.
for the top altcoins I can only suggest
ethereum
binance
polkadot
bitcoin
Cardano

remember, everyone has different view on determining the top altcoins Wink

1. See the developer and the progress for each road maps has been done. If it is going goos and developer / company / foundation still work on it and has many activity in github its mean you already see good altcoin to invest to.

Ditch searching about the team, project, the history and all the Bs that they might not even be able to do. Vision won't help. Roadmap won't help if in phase 1, it is already roadblocked.

Put yourself as a client as if you're buying their products/services. It's all about the market and you being as the consumer.

it's very hard predict what altcoins that can have a profit. there are many factors involved, isn't easy at all build a portfolio able to survive in long term.

I made an experiment that can explain how difficult can be achieve a profit with altcoins.
I get some data from this topic https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/the-next-100x-1000x-coin-2106360 "The next 100x or 1000x coin", where people trying to guess/suggest the coin that could receive a big pump during end of 2017 early 2018.

After 3 years:
13,18% Reported a positive result.
10.83% Reported a 0 (total loss)
the others just negative results (prices go down).

My top five priorities with altcoins:
- DASH: it will follow Ethereum rally soon.
- Litecoin: the silver digital currency and it was used and will be used as trial tool for later improvements on bitcoin network. Do you remember Lightning network trend in 2017, began with Litecoin?
- BNB: Binance know when and how to upgrade their services and build up Binance ecosystem to shill BNB.
- Dogecoin: it is always in my radar.
- Stellar Lumens: it has a habit for big pumps and it is better than Ripple.

1. Best process? Nowadays it seems no amount of research can find out what you really want about altcoins. What influencers put out there usually is quite crap and all fit to speculate. Unfortunately only by following projects, their AMAs especially, do you know what's going on plus of course actually using their service/product.

2. Eth always. No matter what's going on now. I know a lot of others say defi but I don't thik they last. BSC is making BNB people so happy.

Since I am more involved in day trading, I prefer to see how the altcoin chart moves and volume on the exchange.
in day trading I have never used a new altcoin asset. more often than not I use ETH, BNB, and Link. I also trade several assets such as DOT and ADA on the exchange.

What is the best process to conduct a research about Altcoins to invest in?
Usually I use these factors before consider putting money on any coin.
- who is behind the project
- real product
- partnership
- token supply and distribution
- the tech / github
- clear roadmap
- activity on social media
etc.
Exactly, whenever I go for researching a project for investment purposes then I mostly follow this way which already explained by him. After ensuing their activities in all that places, I go for technical analysis. My first thing is to discover the project which trying to fullfil those.

2. Based on your opinion, what are the top 5 Altcoins i need to focused on and probably invest in?
In this time,  DOT, ADA, ETH, BNB, NANO can be your choice list if you deeply look at them. Firstly, you need to cheak their activities in different angles then you can decide how much you can afford in trading. After then, you can try to go ahead for fullfilment your dreams.

1. What is the best process to conduct a research about Altcoins to invest in?
The best thing to see from the strategic partnership that already created and MVP. If that's a legit project and there will always be MVP.

2. Based on your opinion, what are the top 5 Altcoins i need to focused on and probably invest in?
You should focus to the ethereum, BNB, DOT, FLOW and UNI

This is just my 2 cents but the decision will be yours. You should DYOR and that's a must caused by you must have analyzed these coins before you wanna try to invest in these coins.

To me, there is no best process to conduct research about altcoins; different individuals has different approaches to research altcoins; and it is best to find a method or strategy that works with you; so that you can always get desired results.

2. My prefered altcoins atm are Cake, Juld, Ada, 1inch and Litecoin. Always do your own research

if you seriously look for an altcoin to invest, just look at the ranks on coinmarketcap. the top one is BTC and below it are altcoins, it's all there. the top altcoins are perfectly good for investors, what you probably will do is learn when to buy the altcoins you pick.

if you mean investing in a new project then it's going to be a different thing since it's like a gamble. there isn't a lot of ICO anymore. what they do have these days are IDO.

Look into the projects real use case, to safe yourself some headaches it's safer to invest in top projects that are well known, white paper doesn't guaranteed anything, right now white paper is juts for knowing more about the project, if you are into new projects make sure you risk very little money on new altcoins because they are even more risky, if you want to hold a coin for a very long term buy bitcoin and bitcoin only
It seems that the OP has been very professional in analyzing the project, only on this occasion he wants to know some suggestions from other people including yourself about which Altcoins are suitable to be invested at this time, with a total of 5 different Altcoins.

1. As far as I do, I just look for information in their whitepaper, then see the progress on their social media and telegrams. sometimes the information there is very fast, and if there is no progress on the project, it will show.

2. For now I only focus on bitcoin, ethereum, BNB, polkadot, and ADA

By visiting their main telegram channel or where you can find information about them from there you will know the future plans of the dev and became active on the latest developments of the project. But if the said altcoins you want to invest doesn't have channels the least you can do is to search the information in the web since all of the information are there placed by some reviewers, article writer or even the dev itself.

2. Based on your opinion, what are the top 5 Altcoins i need to focused on and probably invest in?

Bitcoin
Ethereum
BNB
Xrp
ADA

This is my solid top 5 in my list.

When researching and investing in altcoins, is mostly a gamble. Yes, you can look at the team, their project's use-case, their goals, progress, and their roadmap, etc, but all these stuff don't matter in the end if they end up failing and not manage to go anywhere anyway.

Take a look at the top 200 and onward projects listed on CoinMarketCap. A LOT of those have been projects that have been heavily shilled sometime between 2016-2019 but yet they're now just collecting dust.

1. What is the best process to conduct a research about Altcoins to invest in?
Cryptocurrency is evolving, there are a lot of projects these days now, just like decentralized finance (DeFi).
So, the best process for me is to find a problem solver, a solution to a problem. And the most ideal is that there is already a product or it is already working, not a fan of an altcoin that is hype only, mostly in just a whitepaper and no product at all.

2. Based on your opinion, what are the top 5 Altcoins i need to focused on and probably invest in?
What do you want? High market cap now or those still in low market cap?
I think it is much is to select first more than 5 altcoins, then filter it to 5 altcoins.
Like you find the first 20 altcoins, then each of them you research then just select 5 altcoins that you are interested in and got your attention.

What I am still researching and got my attention these days are Ethereum, Polkadot, Solana, Serum, and FTT. Just my 2 cents
