Mostly I just go to google, or here in the Bounty (altcoins) thread and I'm going to check all of the bounty campaigns whether they are good to invest or not by simply typing it to google and reading their whitepaper. Next thing is I'm going to look for a background check of their CEO and the rest of the team. Next is their partners, if they have a good partnership with a big company, that's a very promising coin.

Usually I use these factors before consider putting money on any coin.
- who is behind the project
- real product
- partnership
- token supply and distribution
- the tech / github
- clear roadmap
- activity on social media

Check the price of the altcoins of interest, check the price the altcoins was at when it was created and check the whole history of the coins. Read news and follow day to day trends and make sure you read possible things that can affect the price.

Do not invest on shitcoins or dead coins, but you need to make the analysis yourself to know the best coins to invest on. As for me
