Hundreds of coins out there. Which ones should be on your radar? Here is the list.
I am
not saying that these coins will go up or down. I am saying that they can at least be considered. They have been trading long enough (200+ days) that they are
probably not scamcoins. Their recent daily volume is large enough ($10k+) that it's not a complete waste of your time to trade them.
The list. BTC, DOGE, LTC, DRK, PPC, XRP, NXT, NMC, XMR. Read below for details. Last updated:
2015-01-27.
What do you guys think? Good list? Which of these coins do you like?
If you want me to consider adding another coin to this list,
comment below. If the coin has actively traded on an exchange different than where it is actively trading now, let me know too.
Update (2015-01-29):
* A more thorough discussion of the coins on this list:
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/the-value-proposition-of-each-coin-btc-doge-ltc-drk-ppc-xrp-nxt-etc-939072* BTS should also be on the list. To construct the list, I considered the volume of Alt/BTC and converted it into USD. With BTS, the bulk of the volume is in BTS/CNY. Recent BTS/CNY volume is on the order of $50k+, much higher than my cutoff of $10k. I will attempt to address this in future versions of this list.
Tables. Here is what I show in the tables below:
* age: the number of days since the coin started trading on an exchange. I think that if the coin has been trading for 200+ days, it's probably not a scamcoin. Could it still be a scamcoin? Sure. Are there some gems in the pile of shit that's been trading for less than 200 days? Possibly, but good luck finding them.
* volume.usd: recent daily volume of Alt/BTC, as measured in USD. (For BTC, it's the volume of BTC/USD.) Websites like coinmarketcap only give you today's volume. This is worthless just because a coin could have one hot day and then show up on their list. I am using the last month of data for determining current volume. I think that if a coin's daily volume is $10k or more, then it's not a complete waste of your time to try to trade it.
* n.exch: the number of exchanges from which I used data to construct a price series for this coin. I actually had to poll many more exchanges, to see if they had anything useful. And I had to clean all this data. Surprise, surprise -- lots of exchanges give you lots of shitty data.
Probably not a scamcoin. It's possible that these coins are not complete scams / shit. They've been trading on an exchange for at least 200 days.

BTC plus 34 other coins. I think I was pretty liberal with the 200 day cutoff. But, I figured, why not. Most of the coins near the bottom drop off in the next step anyway, so might as well show the data for them.
Probably not a scamcoin and possibly not a waste of your time. In addition to trading for at least 200 days, these coins have a recent daily volume of at least $10k.

Only 9 coins in all. Ignore the rest, focus on these.
Yes, I had to go to 6 different exchanges to get the data on Ripple. Mainly Kraken and Cryptsy, plus the Rock, Poloniex, BTC38, and even Allcoin.
Others. People have asked me about these coins.

NXT is on the list. MAX's volume is tiny. EXCL has a tiny volume and hasn't really been around long enough.
