Hundreds of coins out there. Which ones should be on your radar? Here is the list.

I am not saying that these coins will go up or down. I am saying that they can at least be considered. They have been trading long enough (200+ days) that they are probably not scamcoins. Their recent daily volume is large enough ($10k+) that it's not a complete waste of your time to trade them.

The list. BTC, DOGE, LTC, DRK, PPC, XRP, NXT, NMC, XMR. Read below for details. Last updated: 2015-01-27.

What do you guys think? Good list? Which of these coins do you like?

If you want me to consider adding another coin to this list, comment below. If the coin has actively traded on an exchange different than where it is actively trading now, let me know too.

Update (2015-01-29):
* A more thorough discussion of the coins on this list: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/the-value-proposition-of-each-coin-btc-doge-ltc-drk-ppc-xrp-nxt-etc-939072
* BTS should also be on the list. To construct the list, I considered the volume of Alt/BTC and converted it into USD. With BTS, the bulk of the volume is in BTS/CNY. Recent BTS/CNY volume is on the order of $50k+, much higher than my cutoff of $10k. I will attempt to address this in future versions of this list.

Tables. Here is what I show in the tables below:
* age: the number of days since the coin started trading on an exchange. I think that if the coin has been trading for 200+ days, it's probably not a scamcoin. Could it still be a scamcoin? Sure. Are there some gems in the pile of shit that's been trading for less than 200 days? Possibly, but good luck finding them.

* volume.usd: recent daily volume of Alt/BTC, as measured in USD. (For BTC, it's the volume of BTC/USD.) Websites like coinmarketcap only give you today's volume. This is worthless just because a coin could have one hot day and then show up on their list. I am using the last month of data for determining current volume. I think that if a coin's daily volume is $10k or more, then it's not a complete waste of your time to try to trade it.

* n.exch: the number of exchanges from which I used data to construct a price series for this coin. I actually had to poll many more exchanges, to see if they had anything useful. And I had to clean all this data. Surprise, surprise -- lots of exchanges give you lots of shitty data.

Probably not a scamcoin. It's possible that these coins are not complete scams / shit. They've been trading on an exchange for at least 200 days.

Code:
   coin   age volume.usd n.exch
1   btc 1,660  4,500,000      4
2   ltc   927    282,000      5
3   ppc   873     22,400      4

34 maid   203      5,590      2
35  xst   203      1,320      2

BTC plus 34 other coins. I think I was pretty liberal with the 200 day cutoff. But, I figured, why not. Most of the coins near the bottom drop off in the next step anyway, so might as well show the data for them.

Probably not a scamcoin and possibly not a waste of your time. In addition to trading for at least 200 days, these coins have a recent daily volume of at least $10k.

Code:
  coin   age volume.usd n.exch
1  btc 1,660  4,500,000      4
2 doge   406    880,000      3
3  ltc   927    282,000      5
4  drk   345    180,000      4
5  ppc   873     22,400      4
6  xrp   347     17,900      6
7  nxt   426     15,600      5
8  nmc   860     12,700      4
9  xmr   238     11,500      2

Only 9 coins in all. Ignore the rest, focus on these.

Yes, I had to go to 6 different exchanges to get the data on Ripple. Mainly Kraken and Cryptsy, plus the Rock, Poloniex, BTC38, and even Allcoin.

Others. People have asked me about these coins.

Code:
  coin age volume.usd n.exch
1  nxt 426     15,600      5
2  max 355        351      4
3 excl 122        307      2

NXT is on the list. MAX's volume is tiny. EXCL has a tiny volume and hasn't really been around long enough.

you forget to add stellar(str) stellar.org
stellar is also a good altcoin, with a real company behind them

As the days go by, they're becoming less and less relevant.

Thank you for this analysis.

I'm afraid this analysis is flawed on so many levels.

Here's the most up-to-date information:

https://www.coingecko.com/

^^^ It's not perfect, but it's a good up-to-date overview that would take a lot of work to improve on.

My "category A" alt-coin shortlist is:

- Ripple
- NXT
- Stellar

That's it.

LTC is dead.

There are about 10 "category B" (no money, few developers, no influence, no experience) alt-coins vying with each other.

Then there's "category C" - a waste of time.

dude, the site you suggest, coingecko, lists LTC as number 2... where do you see it "dead" ?  Just wondering... I am really heavy into LTC.

Litecoin???

Whatever floats your boat. Some folks fly 747s and get well paid for it. Others save up for months to buy hobby remote controlled drones. LTC hobbyists are in the latter category.

coingecko's analysis isn't perfect, but it's pretty good. For example, Ripple's community rating is very heavily suppressed because xrptalk gets all the chat, with forum.ripple.com only getting official chat and technical chat.

I'll grab data for these coins the next time I make the list. Is ethereum even tradable yet? Where?

Both MAID and XCP are on my longer list (age 200+ days). But their volume is too low, so they didn't make the final cut.

NONE of these 1.0 copycat Cryptos will be used by the average person for real practical purposes. Only Bitcoin and some Crypto 2.0 technologies. Forget about 1.0 bitcoin copies.

I used a pretty basic standard for including coins in this list. What coins would you like me to look at? NXT is in the list, it's not exactly "1.0".

Where's Maxcoin on the list? In Feb/March MAX has had 11k Bitcoin volume.

Don't have data for MAX going back that far. Will dig around and see if I can find more. Which exchanges should I look at?

Exchange was MCXnow

I would like to know what the amount is of BTC has been moving over the past 12 months.
Like, how much BTC is active.

Bitcoin Days Destroyed is a difficult to understand concept but it might answer your question.

Bitcoin Days Destroyed is a measure of the transaction volume of Bitcoin. If someone has 100 BTC that they received a week ago and they spend it then 700 bitcoin days have been destroyed. If they take those 100BTC and send them to several addresses and then spend them then although the total transaction volume could be arbitrarily large the number of bitcoin days destroyed is still 700.
