NXT is it.  This, from one of NXT's greatest haters.

The SuperNET is coming..

I like NXT. But they're hippies. And their website sucks.

How could they improve their website? What's wrong with it?

Wordpress. A hacker's dream. No information security professional could/would sign off on a smiley cat website that uses Wordpress, let alone an organisation that wants to replace the world's currency.

The design is not very aesthetic. The massive logo on the right looks like something out of Windows Vista. A lot of rounded corner inconsistencies. They didn't bother to update the date to 2015 (still at 2014). Basic stuff that they don't seem bothered with. One is left wondering what else they're not bothered with.

NXT has a really great community. But that's about it. They're just not at the races. Maybe they'll improve? But I just don't see how it can happen.

Hmmm....looks about right to me.

The only issue I'd have is with the years data for NXT.
NXT went live at the end of November 2013, so there should be a years worth of data somewhere....
I'm pretty sure that NXT was on CoinMarketCap by mid-December 2013.

Thank you for this analysis.

I'm afraid this analysis is flawed on so many levels.

Here's the most up-to-date information:

https://www.coingecko.com/

^^^ It's not perfect, but it's a good up-to-date overview that would take a lot of work to improve on.

My "category A" alt-coin shortlist is:

- Ripple
- NXT
- Stellar

That's it.

LTC is dead.

There are about 10 "category B" (no money, few developers, no influence, no experience) alt-coins vying with each other.

Then there's "category C" - a waste of time.

Hundreds of coins out there. Which ones should be on your radar? Here is the list. (Revised methodology: 2015-08-23.)

I am not saying that these coins will go up or down. I am saying that their recent daily volume is large enough ($10k+) that it's not a complete waste of your time to trade them.

The list. BTC, LTC, SLL, DOGE, XMR, BCN, XPM, DASH, NBT, PPC, CLAM, MAID, BLK, BTS. Read below for details. Last updated: 2015-08-23.

If you want me to consider adding another coin to this list, comment below. Let me know which specific exchanges I should look at for your coin -- both for current data and historical data.

Getting data from the right exchanges is important. I just discovered that SLL is a thing, and it's high up on my list too. It's only traded on a single exchange. That's why it was missing from previous versions of this list.

Some coins have low volume for Alt/BTC, but high volume for Alt/CNY. I currently consider CNY volume just for a couple of coins. If there are others that I should look at, comment below.

Renames that I am aware of: DRK -> DASH and BTSX -> BTS. Any others?

Table. Here are the columns:
* age: the number of days since the coin started trading on an exchange.

* volume.usd: recent daily volume of Alt/BTC on a single exchange, as measured in USD. For BTC, it's the volume of BTC/USD. For certain coins, it's the volume of Alt/CNY, measured in USD. Websites like coinmarketcap only give you today's volume. This is worthless just because a coin could have one hot day and then show up on their list. I am using the last month of data for determining current volume. I think that if a coin's daily volume is $10k or more, then it's not a complete waste of your time to try to trade it.

* n.volume.usd.ok: the number of days that a coin's daily volume (the way I measure it) was $10k+.

Here is the top of the table ordered by volume.usd.

Code:
    coin   age  volume.usd n.volume.usd.ok
1    btc 1,860   3,290,000           1,587
2    eth    16     531,000               1
3    ltc 1,140     248,000             975
4    sll 1,080      62,100             818
5   doge   614      57,400             585
6    xmr   446      26,900             402
7    bcn   461      21,900              22
8    xpm   760      16,300             328
9   dash   553      15,400             485
10   nbt   322      15,000              15
11   ppc   870      14,800             683
12  clam   415      13,100              39
13  maid   411      12,900              30
14   blk   238      10,300             100
15   bts   373      10,300              52
16   xrp   555       9,020              88
17   nxt   634       7,350             250
18   nmc 1,040       7,230             602
19   nvc   923       5,250             264
20   str   378       5,130              83
21   xcp   553       2,410              10
22  mona   492       2,380               0

Trading coins with volume below $10k is a waste of time, so only consider coins from the upper part of the table.

ETH just came out. I wouldn't touch it for now until it gets a longer track record.

That leaves us with these coins: BTC, LTC, SLL, DOGE, XMR, BCN, XPM, DASH, NBT, PPC, CLAM, MAID, BLK, BTS.
