They emailed me back and said they don't post it cause they doubt if it's a hoax/scam or not.

What? Obviously it's in doubt if it's real or not. But it's a real story nonetheless, which is on CNN. Journalists...

Hacker has Romney's tax returns: maybe, possibly hoax.

Hacker asks Romney or Obama to send him bitcoins to withold/release tax return he might have: fact.

So it is a fact that somebody is trying to use bitcoins to scam Romney/Obama/anybody interested in the tax returns.

I'm pretty sure I can come up with a Conspiracy Theory to dispute that:
....
How about this is actually bitinstant trying to get attention to it's business and bitcoin, They hold no hope to ever see those mil usd worth of btc but have received alot of coins from somebody and looking to get a really good markup price.  Grin

Yeah, got a slightly more positive opinion because bitcoin hasn't been completely demonized and looking forwardg to cashing out some coins on a short term bubble. TBH just spamming a little bit to see if I get an extra coin by name when I hit 100 posts

Felony blackmail threats against a presidential candidate are a little bigger than a mere marketing campaign.

Somebody went and hand delivered packages to office buildings, at the risk of leaving being identified due to residual DNA/fingerprints as well as possibly being captured on a surveilance camera. To do something that risky for a prank would be incredibly idiotic.

Then again people gave Pirate their money so I suppose anything's possible.

From the way the notes were written, the individual(s) involved don't seem like the brightest bulbs...

probably disinformation; "learders"?  come on.

Bitcoins are, after all, perfect for ransom money.

100k would be a lot to launder, though. Talk about the most tainted BTC address in existence...
Just send it to Silkroad, withdraw in chunks to MtGox, then withdraw in chunks to random addresses.

Do you mean a Million?

I forgot the demand was stated in USD, not BTC. Still, it's a lot to try and get rid of without getting caught.
