All Romney needs to do is buy a few thousand worth of btc, and invest it wisely.  In just a few weeks he'll have that $1M worth of BTC.

theres plenty of referral programs listed here...  http://Http://bit.ly/btcrefs

Then invest it in a Pyramid scheme or two.

followed by some ponzi schemes.

buy some advertising on twitter

invest with a pirate.

manipulate the exchanges.

Your forgot throwing in the IPO of your company or taking pre orders on your next product.

Wow.  Gavin said there would be a big announcement in September.  I gotta admit, though, I didn't think he had it in him.

except that 1 USB stick each was delivered to the Rep and Dem party offices.

do you consider that fact any indication that someone obtained those documents?

actually i do.  if it was a hoax why go thru the risk of dropping off 2 packages that could have fingerprints or being seen on surveillance cameras.

as for contacting them privately, he risks being wire tapped or having his ip address tracked.  also by publicizing the alternate address he gains a different possible avenue for getting paid.

Update from The Wall Street Journal.

Quote
"In separate phone interviews, an executive director of the Republican Party ... and a chairman of the county’s Democratic Party, described receiving virtually identical packages that were dropped off at their party offices late Thursday or early Friday morning when no one was around.

In both cases, the hand-delivered, manila, padded envelopes with no postage contained a note, a SanDisk thumb drive, and featuring some kind of copied version of Mitt Romney signature."

It's too bad that the main events in Bitcoin right now are a giant Ponzi collapse and the largest US exchange being completely cleaned out

Casual visitors aren't even going to see that stuff if they visit here because it gets moved out of the general Discussion forum and into sub-fora with uninteresting titles.

Sure, but I've seen many of the blogs discussing the ransom are dropping tidbits about these events, which is pretty bad in general for bitcoin's reputation.

If this story folds out in a big way that's irrelevant tough.

I'm not so sure that would be a more effective way to receive the money. Your point makes me think the alleged hacker might be counting on media attention to get free money. Apparently the "release" address already has over $10 donated.

I doubt this is about anyone trying to get money or BTC.  People have been looking for a way to get Bitcoin mainstream media coverage outside of the finance and technology sections and what better way to do it than to tie Bitcoin to the Presidential campaign in some way.  Mr and Mrs average America might never read the finance and technology sections of even the most mainstream media, but they're probably reading the current political coverage and this is the kind of story which might even hit the TV news bulletins.

This is probably going to blow up in the face of whoever pulled the stunt, but it's been effective in drawing mainstream attention to Bitcoin.  Whether that's a good thing remains to be seen.

3 - it would be much more effective to privately contact romney/PwC for extortion. if they would pay the way described it would be a gigantic media blowout against romney so they have no choice as to ignore it or try to settle without bitcoin (anyone can observe what is paid on the given address)

With enough press this story could feed on itself as people start donating to either of the bitcoin addresses and the media covers that, then what bitcoin is, etc.

This is potentially explosive for Bitcoin, hoax or not.
