Ethereum is a Blockchain for Smart Contracts. It uses Crypto-currency Ether as fee for processing power and memory that a smart contract uses. It is built by a known group of developers and has laid down a roadmap to incorporate some of the latest concepts and overcome some basic issues with Bitcoin Blockchain.
As against this, Bitcoin is a Blockchian built by a pseudonymous developer for the sole purpose of recording Bitcoin transactions.
So, Ethereum is a Blockchain for general purpose programming while Bitcoin is a digital currency ledger.
Given these, and the fact that Bitcoin has had a head-start over all other crypt-currencies by a wide margin, Ether is unlikely to gain as acceptance as Bitcoin in the short term (1 to 3 years).
However, as Ethereum gains acceptance and becomes the dominant public Blockchain, I expect Ether to gain over Bitcoin.

Why do you think that Ethereum will become the most promising project? Ethereum is developing, its team is constantly working. But also the teams of other crypto currency projects are working.
