If bitcoin becomes very expensive, then there will be room for other cryptocurrencies to be used along with bitcoin. Bitcoins are going to get continue to get harder to acquire as fewer are mined. The problem is figuring out which altcoins will survive.
but i think only bitcoin is enough for the future of the world. i think if the world decide to use only one type of currency and if they decide to use bitcoin instead of any other currency i think it is not impossible then.

The picture says it all. It is inevitable that one day bitcoin will surely be replaced by any other altcoin. But I think that day will be seen by our grandchildren and not by us. Probably 30-40 years down the line, bitcoin will be considered as antique and highly valuable that general people won't be able to think about.

HODLing is an art, not just a word...
altcoins will always exist alongside bitcoin, no matter when we are, now or 10 years in the future. it is the open source new technology nature that makes it so everybody can contribute to the advancement of technology be improving things. but they may not all be as successful though.

I agree with the op, bitcoin will be just one of many currencies, there will be product specific coins, reward coins and various other coins that have a specific purpose.  Bitcoin may be the most mainstream coin but there will definitely be other major coins out there.

It's better for the crypto currency community to adopt at least 5 crypto coin or more, so people will have more choice and there will be balance in the eco system I see that happening in the next five years and those that are on the top 10 coinmarketcap on that time will definitely be on one billion marketcap..
its meant that you want to say that the world should not use a single currency. i think if the world will use a sing currency it will really solve so many problems. i think there will be one and equal currency in all over the world and there will no up and down in any area in the price of the currencies.

People are now actually doing this if you look at Yobit and other exchanges people are more than willing to trade their bitcoin to other altcoin because they believe that one of these altcoins can and will rise to be one of the top crypto currency and be accepted by merchants

i really really struggle to believe that. all they're after is more bitcoin. anyone who thinks their pet coin is gonna take over the world is gonna have a bad time.

before anything else can happen, one crypto has to break out into the wider world. it's no good staying in the weird little corner it's in now.

i think there'll be alts that fulfill different purposes but bitcoin will always be the one. i also think that not a single one of the current alts will be anything other than dead and forgotten in a decade.
I agree with you man. They just trade their bitcoin to other altcoin in my opinion because they believe it will rise someday but I don't think they are holding it for years they are just holding it for 6 months at the best I think. Well it may be possible for the future world to have multiple crypto currencies but I think it would be hard, it would be hard because only time can tell what will really happen in the future.

I dont think bitcoin will kill off all other ALT coins. Imagine 5 or 10 years from now end users are selling their products online and accept multiple forms of payment BTC, ETH, LTE, etc. Why not??? Just look at this chart here.

http://coinmarketcap.com/charts/#btc-percentage

This is the total percentage of the market that Bitcoin dominates. And since the beginning you can see that the peaks are becoming less and less. So this means ALTs are taking up a bigger percentage of the total Crypto market cap.

I think BITCOIN will be a STRONG crypto. It will be the mother of all cryptos, people will buy it to branch into other ALTs if need be.

The charts besides show a bit loss for bitcoin we see the crypto world getting more and more investement that is great. People are investing into some altcoins dreaming one day they can hit or grow as bitcoin even to smaller value like 200 dollars or 100 dollars, this would make nowadays several people rich almost instant.

Anyone can just create an alt, there will always be alt coins but they are testing ground for bitcoin. All alts are priced in bitcoin and they do take some value away from bitcoin but nothing we can do thats the beauty of crypto.

They just don't take away value from Bitcoin - they bring value to the crypto ecosystem.
A lot of people who have invested in Ether, would not have invested as much only in Bitcoin.

Altcoins will continue to coexist with bitcoins. It's pretty simple.
When there's bitcoins, there's also all these other cryptos or alts because without them, trading with bitcoins would be probably very difficult. Right now, trading with bitcoins and other alts is kind of easy.

Many of people joined bitcoin or joined the crytocurrency world because of altcoins, and bitcoin can not stay alone in this journey, bitcoin can only help the other coins not destroying them because we buy altcoins with bitcoin.

no need to wait 5 or 10 years from now, i think after halving yesterday, alt coin (almost every) got up trend in many market and there are some of altcoin jump into 100 % than before. and of course bitcoin will be mother of all cryptos, people exchange (selling) altcoin into bitcoin and the cycle will rinse and repeat so there are many altcoin will start to get up than before.

In 10 years or so there will probably be a few really good alt coins each designed for something specific.
We are already seeing a good range of new and exciting projects beings launched on the back of some alt coins and i can't see that stopping anytime soon.

I agree with OP about this, market is huge and there will be just 21 million coins minus lost coins. There will be a lack of coins as I see it, so this story have a point. If bitcoin really become mainstream there will it will be a mother of all alt coins, and some alt coins can worth much more then now.
Here is not the point in some alt coin to replace bitcoin, its more about following and fill the empty space behind bitcoin. If bitcoin ever worth a lot, people without money will relay on other cheaper alt coins. And its good that for trading with alt coins you need btc, it cant be done without it.
For 5 - 10 years like OP mentioned, we will see if this story can hold. I think its possible, technology is the future, and blockchain have potential to have very good position.
