This is already happening, but the market is just so diluted with so many crappy altcoins that it's harder for a certain altcoin to gain enough momentum.
ETH was doing pretty good until it got exploited, another altcoin will probably rise above the others, but I do not see one rising up to half the value of Bitcoin any time soon.

yes it could be, there are a lot of gambling site now using different type of altcoin although bitcoin still the main currency, it will be great to have a healthy rivalry between crypto coin, but if too many crypto coin its also becoming a problem for the user, it will be inconvenience to have so many wallet

I dont think bitcoin will kill off all other ALT coins. Imagine 5 or 10 years from now end users are selling their products online and accept multiple forms of payment BTC, ETH, LTE, etc. Why not??? Just look at this chart here.

http://coinmarketcap.com/charts/#btc-percentage

This is the total percentage of the market that Bitcoin dominates. And since the beginning you can see that the peaks are becoming less and less. So this means ALTs are taking up a bigger percentage of the total Crypto market cap.

I think BITCOIN will be a STRONG crypto. It will be the mother of all cryptos, people will buy it to branch into other ALTs if need be.

Yes, i don't think. Other ALT coins will increase for Bitcoin. If Alt coins increase then Bitcoins increase too.

There's no room for other crypto. If we have lots of them, each one will kill the other one.Bitcoin monopoly would be the only way cryptocurruncy can survive

i do not agree with this statement. i think we are in struggle to make one currency system in the whole world. i think it will be more convenient to use one currency in the whole world. there will be no need of to exchange currencies. the whole world will use the same currency any where.

Since 2013 I have speculated and traded in altcoins. I've seen  and invested in many promising projects and I've seen and invested in a lot of scams. What is true for them all is that sooner or later they have all become dead in the water.

So I don't believe in altcoins anymore, if one comes along with sufficiently desirable qualities Bitcoin will integrate it.

bitcoin is currently still a central exchange that can instantly be fiat money
without bitcoin altcoin not been able to stir and stand alone may currently only litecoin can approach and replace bitcoin

Anyone can just create an alt, there will always be alt coins but they are testing ground for bitcoin. All alts are priced in bitcoin and they do take some value away from bitcoin but nothing we can do thats the beauty of crypto.

I agree that crypto will be a lot less exciting if only bitcoin existed. However I don't like so many alt cryptocurrencies which maybe they take some stress out of the blockchain but they do also harm to the bitcoin in the sense that they take from bitcoin a part of its power and price. I think if only bitcoin existed now we would see a much higher price of bitcoin but since it has a lot of branches(alts) then the price is not as high as we would like it to be. I am against this future and I only believe in bitcoin personally.

Yes and no/ yin and yang.

NONE of them currencies even have a debit card - bitcoin has multiple debit cards... So in essence, none of them other coins really matter haha!

But its good to have a backup plan in case the bitcoin blockchain ever is super slow as some bitcoin theorists fear.

I believe whatever happens, we are good.

Yes, there will always be multiple crypto currencies, but I believe that there will only be one that is dominant and the #2 currency will be a distant second.

i couldn't agree more with your title, in the future there will be multiple crypto currencies at work.

but i can't help but think you have a specific altcoin in your head right now and that is why you created this topic, and that is ethereum that you also mention in your OP. to that i have to say dream on. because ETH will never become big and will die a slow death over time as people leave it behind.

Unlikely, if Bitcoin is ever globally accepted as a currency (most 'normal' people still call it a commodity) then altcoins will take the place of bitcoins and become a commodity themselves.

Definitely. I believe Monero will be the #2 coin (and could even be #1) since it offers the greatest privacy and untraceability of all coins.

All BTC transactions are public and the user is pseudononymous. That's great and has many practical uses. There is also a need for privacy and untraceability, and BTC can't provide those. XMR has the best implementation of those features in a fully decentralized coin.

Many, if not most, of the other ALTs don't enable substantially different use cases from what one can do with BTC and XMR. Even LTC doesn't do anything substantially different from BTC. Perhaps the storage coins do (like SIA and MaidSafe), and ETH also has its own universe but that confidence has been shaken and it could take a big turn south depending on how people react to the upcoming DAO resolution.

So, I see a few coins with widespread use and the rest will be used mainly by enthusiasts.

Right now bitcoin is dominating the market of cryptocurrency. But altcoin aren't designed to compete their mother. For me, altcoin like ETH, DOGE, and the others are the ways to safe my bitcoin into other forms. Also altcoin are used for daily traders to earn profit. They buy it and sell it everyday, so I don't think altcoin can have same market cap with bitcoin which is bought and held for long term. Maybe in 5 or 10 years from now, we will see a new cryptocoin which is a mother of some altcoin and designed to be a rival of bitcoin, also has bigger market cap.

It seems to me that for now multiple cryptocurrencys are needed since at the moment we dont have one coin that ticks all boxes, perhaps in the future we will get one that does eveything. Either that or we may have to rely on side chains. For ease of use i think it would be easier just having the one cryptocurrrency but i think your right. already we are atr the stage where there are a few different ones needed.

Yes that is right. Like fiat currency which has dollars, peso, yen, euros, and pounds so was bitcoin currency. Bitcoin was like dollars and other cryptocurrency are like peso, yen, euros and pounds. In a cryptocurrency economy it is not good to have only one currency but multiple but among them there is a primary currency that is above all them and that is bitcoin.

No i disagree, though i can see that the combined alt market capitalization is growing, i very much disagree that they would be as fluid as Bitcoin, especially in the next 5 to 10years. I believe it would just be the same as it is right now, alts would mostly just be used for currency exchange; why do i say so? Bitcoin is already having a hard time being accepted by large companies such as Amazon, but it has gone as far to be accepted by Steam, NewEgg and Microsoft. I doubt these firms would consider having other cryptocurrencies to be used in their payment system. So i say altcoins will only go as far being traded between users but not large firms.

I agree, I think altcoins are here to stay. Plus crypto would be a lot less exciting if there was only Bitcoin. The vast majority of alts are insignificant but every now and then you get a new coin that truly attempts to bring something new to the table and that's pretty cool. I think that somehow altcoins complement Bitcoin, they help strengthen the entire cypto sphere.

Agreed. THE BIGGEST ADVANTAGE OF ALT COINS is taking stress off the bitcoin blockchain.
