First thing first, your definition of gambling in the first paragraph of this post did not include gambling for fun, because from your definition you said gambling is for making gains, and such a mindset about gambling could be the reason why you lose and face high risk as you mentioned above. Why some gamblers keep gambling despite their losses because of the expectation of winning and making gains despite the reality facing them and the amount of losses they already incurred, and the worst level of this also is addictions, so those can be the main reasons for uncontrollable gambling.
Most gamblers will say that they are up for fun and want to gamble because of the pure entertainment that gambling can give to them. But if you ask them if they want to win, they'd say yes.

Even those people that run away if you stretch them to some limit you may awaken the gamblers that is in their body, that is because greed is deep in our DNA and the people who keep gambling and taking risks simply are not happy with their life and the level of greediness is much more in such persons compared to those who don't gamble yet. I think that the people who don't gamble yet have a comfortable life and they don't want to ask for more by putting their money at risk, they want to get more with the passing of time by investing in their career and by doing smart investments. The people who gamble know that they cannot increase their standard of life through this way, not because they can't but because they are not patient and they see gambling as a way to get rich fast which unfortunately leads to the opposite of what they want to achieve in the majority of the time.
