First for me is the whitepaper and the purpose of the coin,if they have a good roadmap and plans for their coin then the main thing i look before investing in a coin what are the purpose of the coin what are they trying to propose to the investors.

For me i think it will be better that the coin that you want to invest is a working project ,has a good team and they have a clear idea on what they are aiming for their project

In the situation of market now even the great project with real use in industry or is even famous by everyone is capable of going down as bad as the scam ones so its really hard pinpointing them out. So for my opinion if you are a day trader then just follow your instinct riding the pricewaves to when to sell and to buyback again. 
It will matter to its usecase. Its utility can be see by the demand of the token, intrinsic value is decided when we set how much do we pay for a particular coin. If the bids says 1 ETH costs $155 then $155 it is. If soon someone sells it for $150, then it would be the price as well. You'll have to look at the project to see how much its potential when its developed.

Me personally I don't place too much value on altcoins because their market is the most volatile market in the cryptocurrency industry and at that it highly risky to invest too much on altcoins it can fall to 0.00 cent any moment. I have come to realize that most altcoins are just shit coin except for a few of them who are doing well in the market.
Check the charts of the altcoin you are looking for. Look the fluctuations in price since the creation of the currency and with more relevancy on the last times. Actually crypto currencies don't have an intrinsic value, so they don't have a real value, but we can find some patterns in price.
Separe the altcoins in 2 groups: the consolidated ones (eth, ltc, bitcoin cash, xrp...) and the unstable ones (those unknown currencies performing high volatility). In the second group you will hardly know the *value* of the currencies.

Project idea is the first to see since no one will invest in useless idea, then you need to check their team behind and make sure they are competent and progressive. These two part is the most important for them to be able to develop proper product and for us before making any investment.
A tip from me, dont judge the value of the altcoin if you want to invest. Judge from your research, team, developer, community, volume of trade, coinmarketcap, etc.
