Having done this with tiny amounts in comparison, I know the sinking feeling i get when i realise even with such a small amount. I cant imagine losing 3.2...
Can you not send a small amount with a public message to see if the user would return some of the coins or get in contact with you?
Dealing with Bitcoin since 2011 should mean I know what I am doing by now but clearly is not the case. I've been going crazy looking everywhere. I checked mtgox and sure enough i did make a transfer to them the same day, but unfortunately it wasn't the address i sent the 3.2btc to.
I do have a good update to report though. I found an old electrum wallet backup in my search for the 3.2btc and when I restored it there was 1btc sitting there! Technically my loss is reduced to 2.2btc. I am still in a bad spot since I need to repay the 3.2btc with 10% interest over the next 90days.
I have been trying to examine the block chain for information and I can see a lot but there are somethings on blockchain.info that are pretty technical and i dont know if they could potentially help me figure this out or not. Are there any tools in blockchain.info that I may not know how to use that someon could explain? Maybe help me figure out whether the address I sent the btc to is associated with an entity that deals with alot of bitcoin? if thats the case, probably means it's not an address I own, lol.

I just sent 3.2btc to an address that I have no idea who or what it belongs to like an idiot. I am hurting right now man you wont believe. I clicked the "addresses" tab in the bitcoin client and copied the first one in the list thinking those were my receive addresses.

Your own addresses is indeed listed in the receive tab, and there is a line in the addresses tab "These are your Bitcoin Addresses for sending payments."
Mt. Gox perhaps? It wouldn't hurt to check all of your old accounts. Hopefully, it is not some defunct exchange.

Ouch man thats bad. I felt like crying over losing $400 worth of btc on primedice. Your post puts it my loss into perspective.
Try to find who owns that address.
Learn a lesson and use the note field to describe the addresses you send to.
Post the address here or search for it in google; it's worth a shot. If it's someone public address, you could appeal to them.
If it's in your address book, surely that's not entirely random. Perhaps it's a donation address for the likes of EFF or Wikileaks etc?

I just sent 3.2btc to an address that I have no idea who or what it belongs to like an idiot. I am hurting right now man you wont believe. Turns out by looking at the blockchain, it was an address I sent two 1btc transactions to all the way back in 2011.
Seems like the only other transactions that took place at that address is 2 transfers out, shortly after receiving on the same day on 8-22-2011, with the exception of the 3.2 hitting today =(
