I read through that article and thought it was pretty interesting, but what's the most intriguing part of the experiment is the part when they changed the gambling button system. With having both the red and green lights be reflective of the gamble, you remove the satisfying moment of "winning" a gamble and getting the jackpot. It's unpredictable as to whether you've won or not until you wait for the result. I believe casino owners already know this, as they use indicators to show whether you win or lose (typically that red for a loss, and green for winning). It can also talk about how people want an instant result for whether they've won or not, which makes sense as to why online gambling is so popular.

I know on Primedice there was a script that made everything green, but I personally felt that it was not as satisfying as having green be rarer. That is the *hook* of gambling, then.

what forces us to play is the human nature of us hating to lose. Just like with the stock
market people just keep buying as their losing cause they dont want to see those red numbers.

It makes people chase and even lose more

But we should understand that, in stock market if you keep on buying good company shares over the time you may make some profits. But in gambling instantly one will be losing all money and as we all know gambling is not for making profit but it was created for fun and entertainment. We all are misusing it for free and fast money.

I don't think it's a legitimate study, if it is whoever conducted it is a jackass and needs to get his ass kicked.

Part of me thinks the writer of this article is mocking me using clever symbolism to see if I catch it or not which really pisses me off.

I do not believe any of these kind of studies, since I already know why gambling ruins and the basic logic behind any addiction is - You feel too good when you do it and you feel bad and alone when you dont do it. I think such addiction can run your whole life if you dont stop on time.

I just read it, they seems right. They first compared us to the pigeon, well the example was a good one. I think gambling also gives us addiction because when we win, we want to win more and when we loose, we want to recover our loss and  get in profit. So better do not do it is a best choice.

The article was a very interesting one, and I really liked it. I was pretty surprised by the study results, and I was expecting the pigeons would go for the 100% chance one instead, but I guess the pigeons wanted a chance for more  Wink It's very true that people most people are like that, but some (including me) aren't like that.

Well it differs in each people such as people who lose at their first bet then didn't want to lose again so they quit gambling
That is true, but most people (I think) are more greedy/risky people.

what ever study or books , no one can change the mentality of the gamblers , everyone knows that on long term will be in loss then also on a small hope they just do gambling, telling advice is very good but following it is hard.
There are support groups and maybe they have helped changed some gamblers. Many gamblers like that don't know when to quit however.

I used to gamble a lot in the past, even tho I have always been a casual, for fun gambler, but the study nonetheless explains how it works, I know that a true addict is very hard to recover, but not impossible tho, with professional treatment it can be done.

I liked the article (specially the last few parts). The idea of earning more on this way with a split second decisions is what makes those in need of instant money more addicted to gambling than those aren't and as result they keep on risking more money in which there's always a loss as well, but some never learn their lesson and just continue and make the streak even longer.

we knew this all the time, that small chance of winning forces us to play again and again, even if don't want to risk sometimes, and we loose all of our money

I think this study is a great way to see gambling addiction for what it really is: Just the hope of a different outcome that will be positive next time.
So just like pigeons press the buttons hoping for food all day, you press the buttons hoping for that jackpot.
The people that cannot control this and know when to stop are the people that are addicted to forever wanting one more spin, therefore going broke and not enjoying gambling for what it should be: just a game.
