Hello @tbct_mt2. I have come across your awesome topic, and I find out that the topic is very educational. I will like to request your consent to translate this educational topic to my local board, the Naija local board (pidgin).

For some reasons. For instance, many newbies that come to the forum find it hard to understand how annoying pyramid quoting is; if they know they will not try to do it, some members even find it hard to read such quotes, so if you don’t mind, I would like to have a quick and suitable response for you so that I can try my possible best to translate the topics to my local board for more understanding.

However, I am glad that some users still listened to my advice and started using quote in a completely different way, so their posts look much better and clearer.
Use quote is not a different task. The problem can be not yet know how to quote properly or being too lazy to quote it properly (spammers don't care about what they write so they don't care about how to quote).

For real members, they should read and practice with their posts (if they quote, quote properly).

I know a video from Steamtyme on the Post formatting. Video link on youtube: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=7NHfaViknzM&feature=youtu.be

Although this thread is made for newbies, I think it can come in handy for some older members as well.
Thank you and I am happy to know you feel about it like that.

I think it's worth bumping this topic because some users for some reason known only to them use the quote option in a very unnecessary and inappropriate way. I have even reported some such posts, especially those that contain large images - but different moderators have different views on this - so the results of such reports are mostly unhandled.

I recently deleted one such post in my self-moderated thread which resulted in the user in question accusing me of deleting the posts because I didn’t like his opinion - but that of course had nothing to do with it. However, I am glad that some users still listened to my advice and started using quote in a completely different way, so their posts look much better and clearer.

Although this thread is made for newbies, I think it can come in handy for some older members as well.

I request you to pleas have a look and suggest if I am still doing some mistake. I would be thankful to you. Now that the thread poped up again just thanking you.

Reminder:
Spending a couple of seconds to edit your posts, after clicking on Quote button, to choose which part you will use for your diccussion, rest parts should  be deleted. It takes just a few seconds, less than half of a minute to finish on computers.

there is also a good way to quote which you want to quote by only quoting the small part/some part of the content of the reply you wanted to quote then answer.

You actually can take your second chance with temporary ban and signature ban for one or two years.

It is the best way to avoid pyramid quotes. You made a point here, @nakamura12.
Good posters never or rarely do pyramid quotes. I probably do it when I am on moblie devices and hardly to edit texts to avoid pyramid quotes, but I mostly come back to my posts to edit them later, when I use computers.

In addition to op's thread on tips to avoid pyramid quoting. These three tips made by the op should be followed to avoid pyramid quoting and there is also a good way to quote which you want to quote by only quoting the small part/some part of the content of the reply you wanted to quote then answer. There's also a good tip/way to avoid pyramid quoting is by not quoting the whole thread reply and only quote the important part of the thread reply you want to quote. Refer below:

Ex. Whole/Complete post/thread reply to quote:
From this quote:
You actually can take your second chance with temporary ban and signature ban for one or two years. You can get it or not, depends on your past activities (things presented below are not mine, I describe perspectives of global mods that I read during the banwave in many appeals). There are some factors:
- Total posts that you plagiarised.
- Percentage of plagiarised posts / your total posts (more than half - 50% - will wipe out your second chance, surely)
- Time points of your plagiarism (before or after the rule on plagiarism applied in the forum)
- Your past contributions.
4 years ago - 4 years of genuine, positive contributions I've made to this community - and I'm banned off of this?
Everyone whom got permanent ban will feel happy with a reduced sentence for sure. However, whenever you are back from vacation, you can make the appeal better (that somehow increase your chance) by collecting and presenting posts or threads that you thought are most constructives from your past (before your ban day).
Quote
I'd be happy with a temporary ban - those who are close to me know that I'm on vacation right now anyways - but a permanent ban disregarding what I've done this community for two damn lines 4 years ago is infuriating.
I scanned your post history, that looks good (at least not a pure shit poster), so I think you might have chance, but it is not my position to say anything about this.
There is even a user (maybe more, but I know only one) that even come back without signature ban.  Smiley

To this quote: I only quote a sentence which I would like to talk about but if you compare this to the op's way I think that op's is better than what I share on how I quote.

You actually can take your second chance with temporary ban and signature ban for one or two years.

Editing your quotes will cost a few seconds, so please do editing quotes before you start composing and discussing. It will help save more space each page in thread you discuss, help you and other readers more easily to follow idea flows, stay in context of discussions, and of course, make you a better poster.
So, please read, and apply my tips to avoid pyramid quotes. It is easy and does not cost so much time.

Today, I have another example for you, that most of us overuse by quoting OPs. OPs of projects mostly contain lots of images attached. Therefore, quoting whole OPs will congest the whole threads, and if everyone does it, the threads will become trashy as well as require more time to load whole pages.

For example:
Original OP-quoted post
https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.51416874
I will do different like this:
~snip~
Then, typing what I want to point out from the OP.

<...> I know this is not formally against the rule and can't be reported to the moderator except the follow write up is unwanted or spam. <...>
Here’s an extract of the rules that explicitly mentions pyramid quotes (in the examples section):

<…>1. No zero or low value, pointless or uninteresting posts or threads. [1][e] <…>

Examples:
1. Such posts as "SELL SELL SELL", "I agree", "+1", "Support", "Watching", "Interesting", "LOL", "SCAM", "LEGIT", "FAKE", other one word posts, posts consisting mostly of swearing, quote pyramids, useless introduction threads, threads about a topic already recently discussed in several other threads. <…>
Since pyramid quotes are examples of breaking rule number one, they may be reported and cautioned accordingly by the mods.

Lol. Some users are inconsiderate about the stress and pains caused to others by there hazard quotations appear.
I know this is not formally against the rule and can't be reported to the moderator except the follow write up is unwanted or spam.
But logically it's a good thing if users can adopt the value of doing things rightly
Ooops, maybe you missed it. It is just not a too serious rule violation that can lead to instantly permanent ban. However, being reported too many times with pyramid quotes might be a problem, like with spamming. There is no official or unofficial rule on how many times of such violations will cause temporary ban, but I think with repeatedly serious violations, temporary bans might be considered.

One question though, what is the point of your thread?
Ridicule of pyramid makers only or maybe there are mods who monitor your topic and take action?

The fact that OP is interesting but updating the thread posting pyramid quoting isn't necessary anymore. Don't get me wrong, I honestly appreciate the OP.
I feel reporting it would be enough than keeping it in a thread because chances of getting deleted is very less so just report those over quoted posts when you find it as spam.

And IMHO, this should be moved to Beginner and Helps, isn't it?

This tip is not just for newbies but also for some old timers here. I can see some of the informative thread here with a lot of image or long paragraph getting quoted whole just to comment some one liner message.
most of over pyramid-quoted guys are spambies or bounty hunters.
They only need postcounts for their works, and rewards.
They will not change their posting style, I believe.
What I want to change is real users, who have not known the tips or too lazy to do this with very simple steps.
Avoiding pyramid quotes is better for all, saving more time and more healthy for fingers.

I have moved my topic to the Beginners & help board, which is more appropriate place for my topic.
I thought about creating a similar article recently and I've merited you. Wouldn't it be better placed on the newbies beginners and help board?

Thanks for all of your suggestions, everyone.
I will keep editing my topic and make it better. For now, I believe it has become better a little bit than the original one.
Hope it will help as more newbies (of course, higher-ranked lazy members too) as possible.
I believe it can make several effects on the ways newbies quote threads, not only in serious boards, but also in altcoins boards.
This is one of the most effective, easiest way to keep the forum clean of shit-quoted show.

You're ridiculously trying to lengthen your post. Correct me if I'm wrong, are you doing a signature bounty, which requires 10 - 15 posts (>100 characters) per week?
Your post history shows me that both of you and the guy you argued with have the same thread's format.
What is this, bro.?
Are the coincidences here?
I don't make any judgement on your case, but in the topic there are lots of users complained about your threads' quality.

It's easy to notice that but sometimes it's time-wasting deleting irrelevant words, so I just click on quote. Btw, I wish there were a "Multi quote" button for easy multi-quoting.

Perfect timing for me to read this. Someone in another post showed me a quick shortcut to sort of multi quote. It isn't perfect, but it works.

If you are lazy here, you can never rank up again.

Being lazy is not a good attitude especially to forum's, by doing that you will be belong to those spammers because there are "trash" to your post.

Its is not hard to select the irrelevant words and just click delete.

    Agree!
I will consider your suggestion and adjust my threads a bit to make it less annoying ^^.
  • I suggest you to resize the images to mismatch the default size of the forum's font by addding "width=size"
    ex: [img width=800 alt=image]picture.jpg[/img] .
  • Make use of bold, italic and underlines for headers and for emphasis. [hr] for breaklines with actual lines.
  • And crop the image that contains a signature add, I think that one might have broken a forum rule.

Lastly, this must be placed to Beginners and Help if this is really a "tip for newbies".
Otherwise, you can change the title with "Members", "Forum Members" or others; most of those "scroll-wasters" aren't newbies anyways.

Nice tip, my friend.
I will do it later (in the next few days when I have time).
Thanks for your helpful suggestion.
And small tip from me. When you're quoting post with image, delete tag and leave only link to image.

I will consider both of your suggestions, and choose the best for my adjustments.

It's a great suggestion,  and not only for newbies, many more experienced members over-quoting posts. In past I also did same thing - I posted huge quotes despite that I only replied to last comment. I thought it's ok because I saw so many experienced members posting huge quotes. And only later I realised how it's annoying and not comfortable to read.

Forum rule explicitly says that quote pyramid should to be avoided, and I think most people in Meta already know this thing.  OP, you may want to move this thread to Beginners & Help.  Use "move topic" link at the left bottom of this page.

1. Such posts like "SELL SELL SELL", "I agree", "+1", "Support", "Watching", "Interesting", "LOL", "SCAM", "LEGIT", "FAKE", other one word posts, posts consisting mostly of swearing, quote pyramids, useless introduction threads, threads about a topic already recently discussed in several other threads.

I will not go against this but, the OP's format is giving me headaches.

Here're some of my points:
  • The images blend well to the text (width=1280 screen), to the point that the whole thing looks like pure text with broken paragraphs.
  • There's an add or signature add in the first image.

To help you with this:
Notes:
The topic has been under-constructions
  • I suggest you to resize the images to mismatch the default size of the forum's font by addding "width=size"

Lol, you did it simply because you would like to spam, not have willing to contribute to the forum with constructive, high-quality, or at least well-quoted threads.
Let's change your mindset and your approach when composing your threads next time.

yeah, multi-quote (are you serious). Is it necessary? The current one has already helped you to over-quote (or multi-quote, called as another term).
Will this one which you suggested make you feel easier to spam the forum?
Btw, I wish there were a "Multi quote" button for easy multi-quoting.

Personally, I thought that this information should have been known for a lot of users who participated in this forum (or other SMF-based forums). Let's just hope that they won't be lazy again to do your tips.

And IMHO, this should be moved to Beginner and Helps, isn't it?

TIPS TO AVOID PYRAMID QUOTES

Hi everyone,

In my opinion, over-quoted threads are amongst the most annoying types of shitshows in the forum. Honestly, I used to compose such over-quoted threads, but over time I saw better threads from higher-ranked members, then I learnt from them and improve my threads' styles.
In the topic, I would like to present these following stuffs:

  • To share with you some necessary tutorials on how to improve your threads' appearance by avoiding over-quoting when composing them.
  • To save more space and help it more comfortable for readers, all images will be shown with links. Therefore, readers should click to those links to see them.

For now, your question will be "oh, what are the problems of over-quoted threads?"

As you can see in the following thread, creator over-quoted past threads, which result in vague of idea flows. Furthermore, doing this also causes their threads a bit messy, annoying. Looking at those threads, it is hard to know which specific thread they wanted to discuss (dozens of threads quoted).

Additionally, such over-quoted threads also require large space to display. It means my fingers hurted too much to scroll my computer mouse. And no one is responsible for my medical bills  Grin.

To improve threads' quality, at least its appearances, there are three basic simple steps composers should do:
1) Deleting all un-necessary stuffs (including threads, contents, over-sized images attached, etc.). Only keep which threads (full contents of those threads) you want to discuss with.
2) Using snip to announce that in your thread, you only quote part of original contents of others' threads.
3) Seperating original threads to different smaller sentences/ paraphrases which you want to discuss specific part of its contents with your specific ideas.

So, if you spend time to read, and interested in the topic, your next question might be: Oh, sounds great, but how to do this?
Here you go:
Please look at the following images, then you will know how to do this.
I present three ways of avoiding over-quoted threads for you, which correspond to the three points I mentioned above.

1) The first way:
For the specific thread above, please click on the quote, then deleting all contents in the blue highlighted range (which I show you in the two following images).

2) The second way: if you would like to hide all contents which are extremely long (but still allocate which thread you want to discuss). Please do like this:

Replace all contents by using ~, snip.
Code:
~
or snip
or < snip >
Case study here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.35410681

3) The third way:
For instance:

Additionally, if you only discuss with one thread, you should ignore link to the original thread since the second part of quote, you can do like this (simply using):
Code:
[quote]
contents
[/quote]
to ignore link to the original thread
Case study here: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.36883745

To sum up:
Composing your threads with the approach will make them have better appearance. It does not relate to the quality, but somehow makes your threads look a little bit better.
It is not only useful in the Meta board (and other serious ones), but also has good impacts in spamming boards (like altcoin discussions, etc.) ^^
I strongly believe that lots of higher-ranked members don't know how to do this because they luckily ranked up to those current high levels due to old rank requirements, before the lauch of merit system.

Sorry if my topic hurts your fingers, but I think that it's better to display those images to make the topic easier to understand.
This is valuable lesson I learnt from my experiences, so I would like to share it with someone who need it, and has still don't known how to do it.
For someone who known, just ignore my topic.
Please take it easy, because I don't want to bother you with my topic.
