I recently got this offer. Does it seem legit?

I am running bitcoind behind two router with firewall enabled. I see some dropped TCP connection requests to port 80 and 443 to my computer. I wonder if it was caused by bitcoind somehow. I don't have these ports open. How they got behind routers?

good to see security advice threads in the newbie section. you can never be too paranoid when it comes to IT security, though there are some thresholds most people have to draw the line at, for practical purposes, as a few people have reiterated in this thread.

most people, unfortunately, will never be certain that the device(s) they use are secured/uncompromised. it's a risk everyone has to decide whether or not to take in order to utilize the electronic tool(s) at their disposal.

if you think you have to be paranoid now...just wait until the singularity emanates and we have the ability to jack into networks and systems directly with our minds.

True that, you can't spend enough time researching and protecting yourself as well. It's much better insurance to do this BEFORE you dump your savings into btc. The more you know...........

Security is not something that you wait for someone else to provide you.  There are plenty of steps anyone can take that make theft a minimal issue.  Luv the topic! Where can I get the T-shirts?

Trust no one sounds nice but it has its limits just like reality...

Once (if) bitcoin breaks out of the realm of coders, hackers, mathematicians, an crypto experts there will be no way for the average guy to use bitcoin without trust.  Unless an individual can review and understand all of the source code there must be some degree of trust.  Even then, systems are so complex and technologies so specialized that it can be all but guaranteed that no one person can understand the whole.

There must also be trust that whoever sold you your computer didn't install a hardware trapdoor, that your OS vendor didn't knowingly (or otherwise) leave in a vulnerability, or that your favorite three-letter agency isn't personally interested in your affairs.

In my case I must trust all of the above.  Developers, crypto experts, network guys, hardware manufacturers, and so on.  There is a non-zero risk that I may place unfounded trust in some entity along my bitcoin way.  In that case I am careful to not expose myself to too much risk.

If the value of my bitcoin holdings goes beyond comfort I'll sell and diversify into other assets.
If the value of my bitcoin wallet gets too high I'll send my bitcoin to one of multiple paper wallets, each with a self-imposed maximum value.

I guess my main point is that in reality, one must trust someone else.  This out of the control of most bitcoin users.  What everyone can control is their own exposure to the risk of misplaced trust.  This is where common sense and healthy (extreme) paranoia are your good friends.

Playing EVE online for several years has induced such a high level of paranoia into me that I no longer trust anyone, including myself.
