It was only the wind.
Could it be mined by fpga now?

It always could - it was just a matter of someone making it.

How about the KNC's  litecoin miner? So it is also working on scrypt asic?

YOU CAN NOT USE A SCRYPT ASIC

This is WhirlpoolX not Scrypt and as such there isn't an ASIC around yet, there is however development work being done on FPGA's

Thanks, When is fpga software come out? And how is effectively compared with GPU?

Whenever John or someone else releases it, or you make it. And I'm not sure.

What is UDP layer?

Quote
With UDP, computer applications can send messages, in this case referred to as datagrams, to other hosts on an Internet Protocol (IP) network without prior communications to set up special transmission channels or data paths. UDP is suitable for purposes where error checking and correction is either not necessary or is performed in the application, avoiding the overhead of such processing at the network interface level. Time-sensitive applications often use UDP because dropping packets is preferable to waiting for delayed packets, which may not be an option in a real-time system.
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/User_Datagram_Protocol

I am pretty sure that pseudonymdude is right; the UDP is how Zerotime will be implemented.

And yeah...I don't care what anyone says about sourcing wiki; it is useful for basic infos...

Litecoin miners have memory - unnecessary for WhirlpoolX, really. You could use it, but you'd be better off with a cheaper board.

How is the efficiency? comparing Gpu, fpga and litecoin miner. If I have 200$ to buy hardware, which one is better to have.

Obviously depends on your power cost. You might do better short term with GPU, especially if you've a very low power cost, but with higher power rates, FPGA tends to win.

Does anyone know if the Smelter by Smolen miner does donation mining to a different address at times? I ask as watching my pool hash rate it seems to drop down quite a bit at regular intervals before returning to normal. Say 5 minutes out of the hour. It could be random luck I guess, but was curious as I cannot find a lot of information about this miner.
WhirlpoolX version of Smelter does not split reward, pay 'donations' and so on. Nothing is hidden except source code, all hashrate from your GPU is yours. Old, now obsolete, Quark versions did pay to my address and it was clearly stated in the announcement. Anyway, it's a good idea to be paranoid with closed-source software, so don't store anything important (like wallets) on mining PC or at least run Smelter under separate, restricted user account.

BTW, my miner is as fast, it's based on sgminer and doesn't have any fee.
Glad to hear it! One of reasons to release free version was to be sure that I've got all possible speed from conventional, non-bitsliced, way of mining Smiley

Another smelter question... Is there a way to set a backup pool? I see the pool I was using went down for a bit and I came back to find the miner was idling.
Not in the released version. The code is "almost ready", but I had to put this project on hold, sorry Sad

Thanks for clearing up those questions Smolen!

VanillaCoin 0.3.1 beta has been released by john-connor.

Changes:

Integration of UDP layer
General Bug Fixes

https://talk.vanillacoin.net/topic/170/version-0-3-1-beta-release

https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/m.11792971

What is UDP layer?

Nodes using 0.3.1 are now connected via TCP and UDP.  If you download 0.3.1, you will see how many TCP connections you have and how many UDP connections you have in the statistics tab.

I believe the UDP layer is necessary for the way john is implementing Zerotime.

TCP is the Transmission Control Protocol transport layer and UDP is the User Datagram Protocol transport layer.
