I think people sometimes forget that you can't just ignore the US and move on, large amounts of companies in the EU rely on the US as their consumer market -- as we have a good deal of disposable income in the US (or at least, income that we spend on stuff even if we can't afford it)

I'm going to assume that Trump's rhetoric comes from the fact that there must be EU tariffs on American cars while American tariffs on EU cars are probably lower. That's the reason Trump is going after this, and if this is the case I think most should support him. If we want free trade, we must ensure that it is also fair trade.

I know your point of view. Most people get really scared at the future having less and less jobs due to automation, which is true. Maybe in the future there will be a tax on those robots to be distributed to everyone equally. The problem is then that the government then has to be in control of those robots funds, which some might be ok with, if there is a robot tax involved.

There still has to be enough incentive for people to want to work to make a balance in my opinion. There needs to be incentive to go above and beyond the amount being taxed. Then maybe people will want to innovate.

Protectionism is only going to hurt the USA, as more and more the global market will simply bypass the country. The only net effect that can come out from this, is less and less trade for Americans, a wealth source that will move elsewhere, hopefully emerging markets.

Trump is thinking 50+ years in the past, but the world simply doesn't function like that anymore. Sure it is an opportunity for the rest of us, but i don't think Americans will enjoy these policies for long, especially when they start feeling more and more the negative effects.

As for universal income, that is only a source of inflation. If everyone suddenly has 10k every month, what you used to do with 10k will now cost 20k. Instead of dreaming of earning money without working, worry more about having plenty of jobs (or entrepreneurial opportunities) so you have a better chance to work less for more.

The next country to watch out for is China as us companies in China are already getting the terms of agreement being  violated by China in the area of hacking into some us companies operating in the China region, and we are all waiting for US response to this. The trade war is going to last long.

One way for US to win the trade war with EU is to prolong customs procedures for export items...hence US customs now takes 4 times longer to process outgoing mail making EU customers not want to buy from US. Oh, wait, that was NOT the plan, was it?

Instead of making new taxes, USA should focus on making better cars maybe.

If the majority of the US citizens are preferring to buy European cars to the US made cars, maybe it is because American made cars suck.

Raising the taxes is not how you compete with a better country than you.

A more likely tradewar wil be between China and the US.
