Strange, yet attractive.

Actually the possibility for it to fail completely, is equal to the possibility to become the World Currency. In between though, there's a great chance that the science behind it, will actually work. This has nothing to do with a price tag vs $US or Euro, this is fundamentally based in the idea that the World needs a better way to trade. A more sane, just and transparent way.

This is what's at stake... and I think it has a great chance to succeed in doing just that.

So long as you consider that the current system was born in secrecy and depends on opacity for its continued existence.

"The ones that wield power would not give up that power without bringing all of the tools at their command to bear. They have struggled to achieve and maintain their power for generations. To think that they would relinquish their status without a fight would be foolhardy."

Regulation and censorship of the internet through the proposed "net neutrality" legislations is just the tip of the iceberg.

It's ok to hope for the best, as long as you prepare for the worst.

True story. Being cautious never harmed anyone. I don't think it will come out of the blue, just like that; or it will be an easy thing to be achieved. Every big change usually comes with a price. What'll be? Under what circumstances this will happen? I can't really say. What I know is that it has a great chance happening. Look at the world now. The economy is trembling! Theft is common ground and the big fish will always gets away with it.

Will it require a war to make the transition? I don't know. I hope not. What I know for sure, is that it's en route.

Why u gotta break my heart bitcoin why.  I need ur pumps.

Patience.

Lots of patience.

I think it's better this way actually, price stays low enough that anyone getting in right now won't get hurt to bad if this thing doesn't work out. Also gives more time to accumulate just in case it does work out.

"As low as possible for as long as possible." <- beware that there is a non-zero chance that bitcoin never succeeds.

Just think of bitcoin like a lottery ticket. If you would be in financial peril if the price went to zero, you should reconsider your risk exposure.

Sorry for doom and gloom, but I think it's important to recognize the risks when considering the potential.

It's ok, if we can just find another $1 Trillion we can BUY a WHOLE F-35 for each branch of the military!

edit: Right, with corporate subsidies/tax breaks, taxes are effectively cancelled out for the really big players.

The F35 sheeshhh. That one plane could have cured cancer.

This is not a privilege of the US only; EU has it's "customers" as well. It follows the paradigm of the spider-net. The small insects are caught, while the big ones just tear a hole in it and pass through. Effectively, anyone with a good army of lawyers can legalize everything... because he can! Roll Eyes

^This guy gets it.^

And to that explanation I would add that on the fringe-right end of the political spectrum you have individuals like the Koch brothers and huge corporate sponsors who essentially spent decades pouring tons of money into creating a whole network of think-tanks, lobbying groups, and alternative academic institutions that have pumped out toxic free-market propaganda and legislation.  Decades ago they transformed the libertarian movement from a collection of various nutso neo-confederates, fascists, supremacists, nationalists, christian theologists, objectivists, and pro-protectionism corporatists into a powerful marketing machine for free-market dogmatism that has been poisoning our politics for decades - even if no libertarian politicians get elected.  You can see how corporate tax and income tax are pathetically low in America, and you can see how the social safety net that we used to have in this country has slowly been dismantled.  The Republicans will still pass legislation handed to them from the hyper-capitalist think tanks verbatim, they will later get a cushy lobbyist job or a kickback in the form of campaign donations.  And the corporations reap ever-greater profits to the detriment of ordinary Americans.

It's even worse. Americans don't pay that much less in taxes than most others. Corporate taxes are actually higher than most countries. You just spend it on the military and subsidies, which is the least free-market thing you can do.

the most rabidly right wing Brit would probably be regarded as a commie pinko begging to be relieved of their life by their American counterpart.

You noticed that too?

What most countries consider basic public healthcare is considered to be an affront to liberty, democracy, capitalism, and the American Way by many Americans.

Wasting zillions of dollars on the military, prisons, law enforcement, surveillance of citizens, and defense of corporations is OK though.

This always baffled me. Average citizen in US can not afford a normal cancer treatment provided by basic healthcare service available everywhere else in the western world, right? So if he gets cancer, which one stands pretty good chance to get, he has an option either not to get normal cancer treatment or bankrupt his own family forever. How's then small state beneficial to average citizen in this case? Why do people vote for small state if they are not rich and expose themselves to this enormous risk?
Do we really want to know the answer?

We know San Fransisco will be hit by another catastrophic earthquake within our lifetime, still hipsters and "bassoons" flock over there like it was made of cotton candy.

That's different. A lot of people have no choice, can't afford to move somewhere else because of the job or the family. Being against or for free general healthcare costs you nothing, you just have to vote. And again many, many non-rich people vote against free general healthcare and for small state, with very large chance to give themselves or some family member a death sentence. Amazing.

It goes back to the civil war, with the division between the slave run economy in the south and the more industrial north. The north won the war and the US was de facto a federal state rather than a confederal state. Slavery was abolished, but as we saw in the sixties, and to some extent today, parts of the south maintains those race lines and are vehemently against taking any instructions from the federal level (That's also where this right wing anarchism and hate towards "The Government" comes from). And according to this thinking you don't use rich white peoples money to pay for healthcare for other races.

Of course, most states don't think like this, so these forces started cooperating with the classical liberals/libertarians and christian conservatives because they had overlapping interests, turning the republicans from the party of Lincoln and against suppression of blacks, to what we've seen for the last 50 years. Up until Nixon America was adopting social policies just like europe and much of the rest of the world.

The true genius can be found in the modern day propaganda developed by the republicans and Rupert Murdochs FOX News. They know they are lying, and they know what they are saying can be proven wrong very easily. But they also know that their core audience won't care or understand this if they just keep droning on as if it was true anyway. If you understand that what they are saying is stupid, then you're not their core audience and they don't need you. It's a kind of brainwashing which both the chinese and the Kreml have adopted. It makes it much easier to control populations.

What they also find is that a majority of the rest starts, not agreeing with the BS, but treating it as a legitimate viewpoint. Which makes fertile ground for new fools to fall for their stupidity. How many times haven't you see people being interviewed trying to be "balanced" when asked about "Obamacare". We in europe would just roll our eyes and say that the republicans were off the plot.

Maybe it boils down to a small state for the people who actually need its help, and a bleedin' gargantuan one for all the corporate pockets whispering in backroom ears.

US health spending per capita is the highest in the world. Nearly three times more per capita than the UK where any old vegetable can get decades of treatment for nothing. It might be a bit crap sometimes but at least it's available.

That difference has to be lining pockets somewhere. At least in some first world countries there's an effort to keep corporate interests at bay. The US is a potential vision of the future if they let it go too far.

Definitely. State run models do collective bargaining with drug companies. Private hospitals and private health insurance companies in the US don't have the clout to get the same prices. Plus, a lot of the private insurances have premium features which you won't get in most countries. A large room for yourself and fresh flowers every day won't really help you survive cancer surgery. But most of the difference is from the difference in drug prices. The US market effectively pays all the development costs of the pharmaceutical companies because they don't do collective bargaining.
