Trusted Bitcoiner
there so much FUD right now, and alot of poeple come here to understand what is happening, so i feel compelled to point this out:

Amazing, a double spend was detected and stopped. I jizzed my pants  Shocked

as you can clearly see the bitcoin network is working just fine, despite what some would have you believe

the problem lies in the custom built wallet software exchanges implemented.

attacker(s) are, unsuccessfully, trying to fool these exchange into thinking tx are not occurring when they really are

bitcoin dev are working to resolve this problem by working with exchanges, miners, and also thinking about possible protocol updates to completely remove all possibility of future attacks.

now look back and see who has been spreading FUD, and click ignore.

I wonder WHO/WHERE  the attack is coming from ?

JP Morgan
MtGox
Putin
China
Fonzie's mum
NSA
Some 14 year old in Rio
Mini Putin (you know he has got one)
A bunch of c.......

I already made a thread on this, link: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/who-is-mutating-transactions-459887

The only useful answer so far:

A few possibilies:
1. Someone creating FUD to buy cheap coins (probably scammed mtgox first)
2. Banks/NSA try to damage bitcoin (but why would they start with mtgox related txs?)
3. A competitor like Ripple, Nxt or Ethereum
4. Mtgox trying to make it look like a general problem (but I highly doubt that)

You need a lot of well connected nodes to be faster than mgox, btc-e, bistamp, coinbase...

Wall street to buy cheap coins?

It makes me laugh to think some of you actually think bitcoin is important enough to be attacked by the gov or the banks or the NSA. Please. Bitcoin is still a pimple on the butt of the world.

This "attack" is just some stupid hacker getting his rocks off. Hackers hack coders code and bit makers make bots. This will only make bitcoin stronger.

Well.. back in 2011 gandresen was invited to show Bitcoin in the CIA, and cryptocurrencies were a big thing for the NSA in the mid 90s.. so it is important enough to have some attention, not sure why they would attack the network though

Holliday, I think there is a severe lack of synergy in the Bitcoin world. I would have thought the Bitcoin Foundation would address this, but I stand corrected.

The Bitcoin Foundation seems more worried with appeasing regulators than addressing any real problems. Also, worrying about new functionality before addressing previous issues.

I have a feeling this may have been Gox's demise as well (although it really could be anything with Gox).

This!

Of course MtGox were largely incompetent no matter how you look at it, from multiple standpoints, but that doesn't mean they were lying on the underlying issue.

There were wrong on the underlying issue though. They were using the txid (which was known to be malleable) for their own internal bookkeeping. They were cutting corners.

I'll report directly to you when there is an exchange that I trust sending any form of money to, until then avoid them all. Wink
A Holliday seal of approval? I'll opt in for that, but I am afraid I will possibly not never get to hear back on this matter. Cheesy Cheesy

I forgot to accuse one particular shill and downplayer of problems: Andreas Antonopoulos. Only yesterday had I realized he was the same Andreas I always liked to listen to long ago on Let's Talk Bitcoin. Shame what a Bitcoin cultist he bcame, even if he is no less intelligent today.
"Without MtGox, Bitcoin would have never made it"

Who is the shill round here?

 Grin

Blitz is right on this, without MtGox bitcoin wouldn't have taken off. That MtGox management / staff are still largely incompetent after several years, it's another issue.  Grin

I agree, Gox was important. Keyword: was.

I've heard people say Gox has inflated the exchange rate. They couldn't be more wrong, in my opinion. If Gox was a robust exchange from the start, the exchange rate would probably be much higher today.

Gox is shit.

Why is Gox price so low? Because you can't withdraw coins!

Why is stamp so high when you even can't withdraw coins?  Grin

Because ppl have more faith in stamp then gox.

What if we see stampBTC for real BTC desperation on the marketplace.  Cheesy

How about goxBTC for stampBTC?

You really think MtGox's statement was actually correct and not a way to cover up their own incompetence? Or is this just your own automatic anti-dogmatic knee jerk reaction at work?
I do know that today, btc-e and bitstamp have halted withdrawals. Evidence enough for me. Plus, before that, gmaxwell, a core developer, delivered an explanation of the matter that I have posted here before: http://www.reddit.com/r/Bitcoin/comments/1x93tf/some_irc_chatter_about_what_is_going_on_at_mtgox/cf99yac

That is a likely outcome, indeed!

I haven't listened to him specifically on this issue. This issue is really not that big of a deal. Some transaction labels get changed... it doesn't affect the outcome of the transaction. Bitcoin-Qt handles it appropriately (I don't know about other clients, but I expect they do as well).

I think it should be fixed, and I think it will be, but it's not breaking the functionality of Bitcoin. Gmax was telling the truth when he said there are bigger problems to worry about!

Too bad we live in a practical and not a technical world. That's the thing you'd expect from a lawyer.

what? blitz, u are against btc?
I have an aversion against dogmatic and dishonest people. It culminates in outbursts of the opposite order sometimes, even though I like Bitcoin.

Who are the dogmatic and dishonest people you are referring to here? Blind anti-dogmatism can also be a form of dogmatism.
The ones with the knee-jerk reaction that this is not at all an issue, known for years, MtGox is just trying to shift blame, blah blah

The ones who will issue any statement distorting its truth just so much that it passes in order to protect their financial, ideological and personal stakes.

You really think MtGox's statement was actually correct and not a way to cover up their own incompetence? Or is this just your own automatic anti-dogmatic knee jerk reaction at work?
