An elaborate e-scavenger hunt as an alternative would be fine. Now, someone just has to map and build an e-scavenger hunt...

But users could log in with credentials from other trusted sites like Google, OpenID or Disqus.  And if they have enough reputation on those forums they could be grandfathered in.

This is a good idea but many people prefer to remain anonymous and not leave a digital "paper trail" for any number of reasons.

This newbie area seems like a good idea to weed out scammers and such.

I think there have been a few good solutions, I don't have a problem with the 5 post minimum. But I agree with the post about allowing access in waves. First 24 hours (or 5 posts) you are limited to the newbie section. Then after you have access to the general topics. And after that allow access to higher up levels after another span of time.

I don't mind the 5 posts, although I never worried about it before cause I just like to read the forums and never needed to post until now. Should have thought ahead more.

Now I am confused. Is the real limit 4 posts, or 5 or 15?

Yeah because it SO difficult to write 5 posts  Roll Eyes

Waiting for four hours is the hard part of being in the newbie zone - I mean how hard is it to write 5 posts!
It's not hard.  Which begs the question as to why require it?

The four hour time rule is more effective I believe.

This place is out of control.. I created an account and an hour later it gets deleted. All I made was one post in the newbie forum.

So here I am again. Lets hope this account doesn't get deleted too. I want to contribute but can't. I may be a n00b but I'm a long time lurker and miner.

Wish I knew about this limit earlier!

I guess if you're new around here, it couldn't harm to do some more reading Smiley

Is there anywhere to see how many posts you need for certain areas? I noticed you can't post in the gambling section until you have X posts... but I can't find anywhere where is says how many.

A better solution is just to remove the restriction and let anyone post.

You can't create an account using TOR, so I don't see why there would be much abuse.

My two bitcents.
