Yes the 5 post is OK, but 4 hours community service is time consuming. if they could reduced to 2 hrs that will be great Smiley

Im also OK with 5 posts, there's merit in not spamming the main sections with useless comments. It's worth pointing out that there's a huge amount of garbage on the main sections from more senior members though. How do we reduce that - back to newbie jail for any persistent offenders??

5 posts seems fair enough to me. I can hardly imagine the amount of spam that would flood discussions without some sort of limitation.

Hi, I'm also a newbie in terms of post count.  I'm not able to suggest an alternative limitation system, but one would definitely be nice Smiley

The majority of time so far, its been good to just sit back and learn, people seem to ask/answer questions for me.  But sometimes it is a little frustrating while following the thread of a particular coin; that I can't express my thanks or add a quick question or throw an idea out there while people are talking about particular matter.

With the current system, I see how people whom are more impatient, just mocking the current system by creating threads like, 'post 1' etc - which to me would suggest it needs changing and maybe enrol some extra moderators to take care of the trolls?

Just my 2 pence worth  Wink

Well they proved that http://newbiejail.org wasn't a scam, so you can use that to skip the 4 hours but that doesn't solve your 5 post problem. Posting here does though. Cheesy

If all you are trying to do is avoid spam, then have a new account post some BTC to a "sign up" address.  If they get reported for spam, then keep their deposit.  If after 10 or so posts, then refund their BTC.

This way a Spamers will help fund the site, and anyone that would rather put up BTC than wait 4 hours and post 5 times can simply get on with their life.

Does require a little bit of coding ...

5 post limit is useless to prevent spammers... 4 hours online is a better way to block them...

I honestly think a 5 post limit is fine, if people aren't willing to take the time and put some effort into making 5 "decent" posts at the start, then why should we think they would ever make decent posts on any other board.

sorry but for me the only one and working solution is to simply delete spam posts because it works always and everywhere. People are buing accounts just to not have to sit in jail which is stupid to me. I know its very expensive to read every post and delete spam, but why not allow people to do this? Let people vote for posts. They are already spamming forum by typing +1 instead simply pressing +
Then it would be very easy to just hide posts with for example -5 votes and show them only on demand for people who would be interested in seeing stupid posts.
Also it would be easy for admins to see only posts with big negatives and delete them if needed.

The coding required for this would be too expensive.

Also, a pure democracy is tyranny of the majority and that's no good.

Why its no good when you automatically hide posts most people dont like? Its not like you ban people with that method or force them to not post at all. Besides maybe there is already mod for this forum available for download so work required is not that much like you think.

And btw you said that only 5 posts without time is easy to overcome by spammers and time restriction only is also easy to overcome. Then how these two combined are not easy to overcome? They are. this is why current method is useless.

I'd suggest whitelisting certain people.

Another option might be a non-spam bond; 0.1btc that you're not going to spam?

There's already a thread to get whiltelisted on.

Invites for hero members? This way, if user turns out to be spammer you can blame hero member for giving invite. Let's do this, haha.

I can see Hero members not inviting anyone lol

5 post is ok, but the 4 hours of staring is a bit too much

Why stare when you could be reading about what's new in the Bitcoin world? What about all the drama sideshows that go on?

Not interested in what people are speculating on?

What about how Bitcoin is gaining acceptance in the political stage?

There's got to be hours worth of reading there.

A test quiz on scams, spamming, trolling, etc?

Or a hero member must vouch for someone?

Does that mean all new members must know a hero member in real life? Or is there some other way to vouch for a newbie?

if you have a way to get around it, I'd like to try it!

The quickest way around it is to get stuck into this discussion and help out.

Once you've proposed a few solutions and discussed it, you're magically let out of newbie prision.

Don't just take my word for it. Try it!

for some reason, reddit is able to function without a 5-post incubation period.

It's coz they're all trolls and spammers anyway...

...I kid! I KID!
