I think it can never be the root of evil, if we pass from the biblical point of view, since the time of Jesus Christ, people have done business with coins, and that is where the saying came to "To Caesar what is of Caesar and what it is from God, it is from God ", this means that we all always work to earn our daily bread, our sustenance and if it is obtained in a good way with our effort, the reward is much greater because we contribute to generate services.
When money is obtained incorrectly or is obtained by performing bad actions, such as robberies or similar events, I think that in that approach is bad. But we can not confuse these two things.
