HODL is slang for “Hold On for Dear Life.” It means that the price fluctuations associated with the crypto are so great, but the expected return is also so great that you are going to want to ride through the downturns are take advantage of the price increases.

Not only you, me too was wondering before why they say HODL instead of HOLD. But now I understand, the meaning of HODL is Hold on for dear life. It means that they believe their coin will be profitable one day.

Can anyone clarify what this term means? I was wondering if it should really be spelt as "HOLD" or the meaning of "HODL" is really crypto-related. I already tried searching threads that explain this but was unsuccessful. I was very curious since I began reading discussions in bitcointalk and I usually see this term but I just understand it to mean 'hold' which means don't sell yet your coins. Please correct my misunderstanding if any. Thanks for your time.

The term HODL can be translated to 'Hold on for Dear Life' and is the same as the term HOLDING with a more serious sense to it. In this market, it is the strategy to not do business either by way of trading away or selling away your coins, especially when their values are low or is not gaining. Instead, the better move is to just hold on to them until such time they regain their value back and get the value they lost.

It’s a trading lingo which just basically means to hold your coin. If some of you are not aware, there are actually some words or terms used in trading wherein traders have their own understanding; HODL could be referred to as “Hold on for Dear Life” and if abbreviated spelled out as HODL.

That's seems like error but it is not. It's like a manner to name "hold" - "hodl" that also have his own value that means - "holding your coins before something happens"

In actual this word is HOLD not HODL , but in the cryptocurrency field most of the people are doing Thier own experiment and try to show Everything in another logical way of understanding .
Here HODL means hold your assets that you have for bulk amount of profit and also don't go for the panic sell .
HODL word most of the times we can see when whole market of any coin going much down or dump then we say to everyone that don't go for the  panic sell Because this is a time of HODL , if you will hold then market will get better support easily .
So here this is simply a hold and changed by hodl to show more creative word in cryptourrency .

That word came from over hype guy at this forum i guess. And everyone else start using that word to replace HOLD. kinda funny though.
HODL It means that the price fluctuations associated with the crypto are so great and the expected return is also so great that you are going to want to ride through the downturns are take advantage of the price increases so hold in a meaning hold your coins and wrote HODL instead and went it quite viral afterwards it usually used in a context of not selling your coins i think so

This is the case, so that you can make the most of the consequences. Thank you so much, that you just grew up, and that word became so symbolic, especially in the current world.

It is a term used for holding a certain coin or "Hold On for Dear Life."  People in crypto use the term HODL when they reffer to the term HOLD, it is a slang term used by most crypto users.

Hodl (often written HODL) is a slang term and Internet meme that is used in the Bitcoin community when referring to holding the cryptocurrency rather than selling it. It originated in a December 2013 post on the Bitcoin Forum message board by an apparently inebriated user who posted with a typo in the subject, "I AM HODLING." In 2017, Quartz listed it as one of the essential slang terms in Bitcoin culture, and described it as a stance, "to stay invested in bitcoin and not to capitulate in the face of plunging prices." TheStreet.com referred to it as the "favorite mantra" of Bitcoin holders.
Since entering the Bitcoin vernacular, HODL has become a backronym for "hold on for dear life".

It came from this post: https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/i-am-hodling-375643

I think it means "Hold On for Dear Life".. and I like to say that "you will never HODL alone" Smiley

This one explains it all.
I was also a newcomer back then and maybe even now, but going back to newbie days I searched for the meaning of HODL also and found that it means "Hold On for Dear Life" and it was quite funny and amusing in the same way.

Cryptosphere has its own lingo and it takes a little getting used to. Maybe this term started as a gaff, or typo, whatever the reasons it stuck with the crypto community and is posthumously recognized and accepted to mean hold on for dear life, sounds about right and fits right into the sentiment too. Cheesy
