From my little understanding of what bitcoin is, the major reason why they call bitcoin number one is because is the first curryptocurrency and is also address as mother of all alternate coins.
Bitcoin is first and most valuable cryptocurrency. Folks can believe it, already it proved itself, because Bitcoin went through all the difficulties and won the trust. At the moment, the new scam coins cause people to call Bitcoin #1.

Bitcoin is always the number one, it dominate the cryptocurrency market. It's even the first cyrptocurrency that the government allow to use in local transactions. The transaction speed and low fee are the best! Plus you're gaining a better income than investing in fiat currency.
it is obvious that Bitcoin is number 1 and it gave birth to the number of altcoins, and so many have been given a good life. I think the leadership of bitcoin will change in times, because there are so many people in the community and everyday they invent something new. But what are the real power of bitcoin power - it's the number of people and the dedication of the people involved in it. 
I would say Investment and speculation is my choice since Bitcoin would stand in number one position on all the criteria but the Investment and Speculation will be the top list.

I always thought Bitcoin was the number one! Because most of the altcoin are exchanging through the BTC. ETH has also become more complete, but need more time!
