Though most Airdrops are fake, but All Airdrops are not Scam. An Airdrop is a free giveaway of premised coins, moreover Airdrop is a fast way to get a large number of users, and it's easy to get a strong community. Through Airdrop A new coin comes to market with popularity.
I would also like to add that it's not necessarily only ETH wallets, it could be other wallets too like Waves, etc.

for me airdrop is a free gift distribution.

It is a giveaway done by developers of new coins or tokens just launched. To promote their coins, they literally give away coins to people who claim it. So basically it's free money. But often such coins are worthless...
Actually I know little about airdop. As per as I know, airdrop is a free token by developers. It can get by fill up a form Of airdop.
