I have to think about giving quality to my posts as suggested here

I just got only 1 merit I don't know what it means and I see some profile with thousands of merits. What does it and how does it come?

It only takes one post for everything to happen. (1)

The post where you receive it is a clear demonstration of the previous paragraph.

________
One wonders how it takes more than a year to ask that question.

Zero merit, I never bothered / warned / Investigate /
Merit 1, yes.
_________
(1) Users who are a source of merit have their exception to this premise.

I wanted to add you some merit but unfortunately looking at your post history. it's only full of bounty reports which add zero value to the forum.
It's obvious that what pulled him to the forum was bounty hunting. You never can tell what conditions the OP is in to elk a living. However, I think it would be prejudice to judge them harshly by slamming the spam/shit poster appellation on them. Too early for that. A lot of us here started out as shitposters, BTW. We never can tell, the OP may be a rough diamond waiting to be fine tuned so to say.

Merits are being given to members here in this forum who deserve it if they are making useful quality posts or posts helpful to other members. Merits are also the way to make you rank up, that is why other members here are cheating that they are exchanging merits with their alt accounts to earn merits, and it is obviously against the rules in this forum that you could get banned.

@OP ~ Yup! But chill, don't stress yourself out (unless you're now hungry for csmpaigns) Grin. Don't get intimidated or jealous if you only got 2 and others have thoudands of merit. It doesn't justify that you're not productive here, the fact that you are slowly getting one by one already means a lot. I know that there's nothing wrong of developing your account here but seeking for self-improvement should be on the top of your priorities. Just continue learning  and good luck!

Merits are given to the people who have a lot of contribution to our forum but at the first time that the merit is implemented there is an airdrop distributed to them so some of the member already start into the following merits depends on the number of their acitivty but today if you will create a new account you does not have merit yet instead you will earn this through creating a thread which can be helpful and answer the peoples question, how to get merit? it depends on the user they have the right too who is the one deserve to have merit.

Every 1 merit you will got you can get a 0.5 sendable merit or sMerit.

Also there are a lot of members are giving free merits that will pass their qualification.

You are granted merit from other members when creating content or a useful response to topics, and this merit helps you develop your account in the forum and when you are granted that reputation you can give other people half of this merit, for example if you get two, you can give one
And I would like to add merit cannot be beg or requested you cannot even sell it, you need good contribution for the forum and if you think some of your good posts  are not credited with merit you can check threads coming from merit source they have a thread here for those who wants to qualify their posts that deserves merit.

As you can see in the previous reply, this merit can be interpreted as a motivator for yourself to be able to post something of quality. The merit system was put in place because the admin had discovered that tens of ton of junk and worthless post kept flowing around here non-stop.

Thats why this system support anyone who post quality good. This system can limit spam poster from rank-up and will not prevent anyone from rank-up if they can make a good contribution to the forum. When you care about forum then other user will care about you. Useful writing has the potential to gain more merit for author recognition, and established Legendary member can generate more merit because they have better knowledge and experience than others. You can also do what they do if you want, hone your skill and knowledge and start now.

You are granted merit from other members when creating content or a useful response to topics, and this merit helps you develop your account in the forum and when you are granted that reputation you can give other people half of this merit, for example if you get two, you can give one
In my opinion this has been explained hundredsl of time by other, its just that beginner dont want to know because of their habit of rarely reading sticky thread.

Some are slightly populated, but there are plenty of scarce 1k section/subsection pairs. There are two rascals with a double entry on the above list ...

Note that here I’m aggregating on two levels (section/subsection), whilst the Altcoin exercise was performed on one level only (section=  Alternate cryptocurrencies).

There are no current merit-earned Legendary members just from Altcoins (aggregate of all  "Alternate cryptocurrencies" boards and childboards). The maximum case had earned 407 Merits there as of last Friday. This is the list for those above 250 earned merits there (note: some others may have earned a few more there, but the posts have since been deleted, thus these do not add to this count):

Interesting. Looks like it would take someone many more years to do it or may never happen at all. If I remember rightly there are very few applications to be a merit source from anyone alt oriented. I've no idea if there's enough to merit in there but it could do with a few heavyweights just in case.

That's not an insult directed to anyone. It's a straightforward factoid. If one is in that particular club the merit will flow far more than other places where relationships aren't as close or reciprocal.

You've being a dedicated forum member to have ranked up to your current rank. Well deserved!

Legendary purely from altcoins would be a very significant achievement since so little merit flies around on that board. You'd have to be ten times more compelling than someone who posts tit gags in the wall observer thread.
Well played, @gentlemand, well played.
I am not going to bite this bait, and even if my thirst for merit-related achievement is legendary, I won’t embark on this venture.
Btw, I never posted tits on WO, trains, a lot of them.

@Op Merits are like retweets on twitter because it is hardly gotten since it deserves an earnest intellectual output, whereas you need dedication time and patience to earn merits and ranking on the forum is mostly decided my merits and activities count. The accounts with much merits have been here contributed a lot to the forum via elaborating the systematic review of Bitcoin and blockchain entirely. It is quiet surprising why newbies are always not ready to read the frequently asked questions and repeat the question all over again.

If I were intent on growing my merit score - and I'm not, the only meaningful figure to me was 1000 earned - there are places I wouldn't bother devoting my energy to like the altcoin sections. There are areas where it definitely flows more than others.

I would struggle to post in the Altcoin section even if there were a continuous overwhelming flow of merits. There is a limit to everything, intellectual prostitution included. I would rather take pride in something like “ legendary outside altcoins”...

Merit is a mechanism that acknowledged a quality post. A merit can equally be define as a criteria that qualify a member to the next rank, which also indicates that a post of op,is meaningful.
You define merit as evidence of reward to someone who contribute immensely to the betterment of the forum.

Well merit is requirement for you to rank up. And in my opinion getting merit is not easy as it could be. It takes a hardship before you can acquire it like average posters like me. Anyway, I am okay with my current rank and does not wanted to rank up to higher ranks. I can get to use of it and happy that I am earning cents with the campaign I join.

Still if given a chance to rank up then yes sure why not. I can't just get enough merits like those quality posters did here in the forum. You can observe how they do it and follow on how and what they did.
If many beginners have thoughts like you, there will probably be many beginners who will move up the rankings with effort and post quality that can be said to be good.
anyone can move up the ranks and earn a lot of merit. The OP just doesn't know what to do and how the mechanism works.

I think all have been pretty much said about what merit is. And if you'll take time to read those links of threads posted before me, then you'll surely understand what it means. Just think of it as "likes" or "reacts" you get when posting something, like in social media. Though there are some things that merit-senders are looking for in a post before they give them one. Like the quality or relevance of the content. Giving merits is totally upon their discretion.

Some people have thousands because they were already in a high rank when the merit system began, then they continue to post good quality and relevant contents that other members find merit-worthy so they continue to gain merits.

Hope my explanation helped you somehow.

I just got only 1 merit I don't know what it means and I see some profile with thousands of merits. What does it and how does it come?

You joined this forum more than a year ago. But you do not know, what is merit? This is because you have spent most of the time in the forum in bounty section. You didn't spend much time outside the bounty section so you don't know what merit means.

Merit is an indicator of a good quality post. This means that if you see some merit in a thread or a post, then you must understand that the post or thread must be of good quality. If you post good quality post then you will definitely earn merit.

Now let's talk a little bit about what is sMerit (sendable merit). sMerit is the merit that you can send to others. If you get 1 merit, then your sMerit will be 0.5 which means half of the merit you will get will be added to your sMerit. However, you cannot send a fraction of 0.5, 1.5 such merit to others. You can only send the full number of merits (1, 2, 5 etc) to others. To see your Merit and sMerit Balance, visit..

A lot of the weirdest and most interesting stuff by far happens in the altcoin section. It's wading through the noise and hysteria that makes it an unbearable experience. That's one section that could really use a Reddit-style thread upvoting system to find the good content.

But if you're committed to ranking up your account you need to limit the energy you put into it. It's a shame there isn't more possibility of reward in there for the good posts.

Merits and the number of posts decides your rank in this forum. The more merits you have the higher your rank. Merits are basically rewards which are distributed by fellow members depending on your topic or reply here.

Therefore always create great topics and be helpfull to anyone here with your replies.

After you have been on forum long enough and are wel known snowball effect works for you, that's how some people have thousands of merit

This is definitely a factor for some accounts with vast amounts of merit. There are lots of subcultures on here and some of them are made up of nothing but accounts that were senior before the merit system arrived.

<...>

Some of them.
Some others gained their merits outside those groups.
When I started my journey here on bitcointalk I had zero merits and zero friends.
What I want to say, to the OP, not to you @gentlemand, is that having friends might help, but it’s not a condition to get merits, and if ever the snowball effect exists, the effort on post quality content for sure pays off better in the long run at getting merits.

I checked your merit received history and some names repeat a lot. After you have been on forum (any other field) you automatically create connections and those connections help you climb higher.

Many never step outside their groups so you have people who started off with large amounts of merits they were airdropped batting that merit back and forth between each other. A lot of the stuff they merit each other for is in jokes or one liners, or simply agreeing with the point of view that's fashionable among them, that would never be merited outside that club.

Well, it is good to know for the sake of knowledge but merit shouldn't be the first thing newbies (like me) to consider. Providing value to the community comes first above all.

This is the first reasonable post in your post history, almost worth a few merits.
Problem is, to do so I have to disregard everything you wrote in the Alt board, included the POS>POW nonsense.
So the merits I would have given to you for this posts are more than offsets by be “negative merits” you earned for the other posts.
Really sorry.

With close to 4000 merits, you definitely are one of the profiles op is referring to.
The merit score of your profile will tell us how good the poster you are, how faithful you are.
Concerning the quote above, it's not something you can deduce instantly by the merits the profile has. You have to consider that at the time when merits was introduced in January 2018, merits were airdropped to users only on their activity then, not quality (bear in mind that, some of those users have not earned any after that). Accounts also change hands sometimes; users farm accounts to high ranks to sell them to others who may/may not be quality posters. That being said, other than this, merit score can be used to come to your conclusion above 99% out of 100.

I just got only 1 merit I don't know what it means.

This means recognition of your good work in the forum. And you can get this recognition for the following reasons ..
1. Creating informative threads.
2. Good quality comments.
3. Help anyone in the forum who asks for help.
4. Bursting scam.

What does it and how does it come?

Merit is the recognition of your good work.
Why is merit needed in the forum?
1. To rank up your profile.
2. To gain trust in the forum.

The merit score of your profile will tell us how good the poster you are, how faithful you are.

A reward for hard work as per quality content creation or post that helps you grow in rank in this forum. Just like every reward, it is earned and not beg for! But then, for everyone you gain, it lives you with a part of it to send out.

It doesn't have to be hard work and often you can tell when someone is busting a gut and it's something of a turn off. If you write what you think other people want to read you can end up satisfying no one.

The best thing you can do is be yourself. Follow and develop your own interests. Don't pretend to be someone you're not and don't pander to others either. And a good question is just as relevant as a florid answer.

Probably your inquiries are now been answered to be fact that some users are already given a helpful link which discuss about merits.

For simple explanation, the amount of merits you have gained are the amount of times how you been useful in the forum. You could simply gain these merit through making a significant topic or discussion that could help other members. This merits can be also considered as regulation for ranking system the forum.

I wanted to add you some merit but unfortunately looking at your post history. it's only full of bounty reports which add zero value to the forum.
I remember when my profile are all consist of those reports. It took me a while to realize the forum greatness. I think its too early to judge bounty and airdrop hunters cause I see myself with them before.

Some could actually changed but Im not expecting all of them would realize that. Since he is still a newbie, Im not gonna judge him so easily but instead teach him the proper while it still early.

Merits are just a reflection of the number of a contribution right here on the forum it's a helpful threads contribution, not a monetary contribution that member has a lot of number of merits are some of them are the eldest right here because they are here for a long time and they shared a lot of information and helpful threads so the merits are the rewards

I don't want to get harsh but right most of the content of OP is all about bounty report if you still do this you cannot get any merit again because this only gives to the people who deserve and give a lot of time to share their information.

I guess the easiest way to explain merit would be,
A reward for hard work as per quality content creation or post that helps you grow in rank in this forum.

Don't consider it as a reward since it's subjective.

OP just needs to follow the forum rules, be polite to others, and post freely constructively without pressure or doing harm to others or to the whole forum itself.

I just hope OP will read the links given to him. He is a bounty hunter based on his post history and in most of the cases, these people usually missed some updates about what's happening in the forum.

The links provided on this thread are a good read on what you need to grasp concerning merits (and sMerits).

Concerning the profiles you see with thousands of Merits, they have probably spent lots of time on the forum since the Merit System kicked-in, and created some kind of content through their multiple posts that was considered decent enough by others. You can look through the official Merit Stats for a simple view on the most merited profiles and such.

Bear in mind that when the Merit System kicked-in, on the 25/01/2018, profiles were airdropped an initial quantity of Merits, equivalent to the number of Merits required for the rank of each person at the time (0 Jr. Member – none required at that point in time - , 10 Member, 100 Full Member , ... , 1k merits for Legendary members). Some Heroes were awarded 1k Merits exceptionally.

Note that the typical rookie misconception is that a profile with many Merits should have plenty "Merits to award" to others. After all, you see a large number of merits on their profile summary, so they must have plenty to hand out. That is not so.
Remember (after reading through the referenced links in the prior posts) that Merits and sMerits are related but are not the same. A profile with 1k Merits on his profile could have no sMerits (left) to award. The Merit counter does not decrease (unless you are really naughty) – it’s the sMerit counter that decreases after you send sMerits to someone.

i.e.
- User A has 10 Merits and 2 sMerits. User B has 0 Merits and 0 sMerits.

- User A sends 1 sMerit to User B.
User A will now have 10 Merits and 1 sMerit left. User B will have 1 Merit and no sMerits to award (he has 0,5 virtual sMerits, but only integer figures are sendable).

- User A sends 1 sMerit (again) to User B:
User A will now have 10 Merits and 0 sMerit left. User B will have 2 Merits and 1 sMerits to award to others when he pleases.

Essentially merits help you to rank up in the forum and to allow to forum to encourage users to make quality posts.

You may be better off thinking about them as similar to an upvofe but there's a limited supply that users can give out. For every 2 merits you receive you'll get one merit you can send. There are also merit sources who get airdropped amendable merits.
