Why is he arrested?

First time around he was arrested for falsifying data on his exchange's balance sheet. Second time around it's embezzling customer funds.

Third was yesterday for using Mt Gox bitcoins deposited into his still open bank account recently to pay for blow jobs, if you've been keeping up with the news lately.

Was cold wallets a posibility back in the day?

Yes and he claimed he was using them to store most of the Mt Gox coins in. Later he claimed his cold wallets had "leaked" and he'd lost most of the coins, but that's impossible if he did a competent job when creating them. If he gets caught with secret competently created cold wallets containing Mt Gox coins there will be hell to pay.

It seems like he is going to have a relatively relaxing time on a Japanese prision petting cats and drinking Fuji bottled water, then once he is out he will still be rich because he most likely keep Bitcoins secretly hidden somewhere in case something happened. Maybe in a cold wallet or something.
Was cold wallets a posibility back in the day?
Yes they existed back then.

Yes it's called magicaltux and was last active on July 30, 2015 although his last post was two years ago. Here's his profile link where you can find all his old posts.

He used it for customer relations in the early days after he had brought Mt Gox, which is still advertised in his signature.

I lost money on mtgox indirectly because I was forced to buy coins at $1100 to get my money out....so I was damaged too.  Serves you right you fat fuk

That is why escrow based exchanges are way better that real time exchanges.

If he did not return the embezzled money, will he also only get ten years?

Restitution is a much, much bigger deal in Japan. You can avoid jail time for certain crimes all together if you pay enough. I seriously doubt he has much of his own money but he could reduce whatever time considerably by coughing up what he has.

I believe his jail time is set in stone, he said that "he had intended to pay back the money" (according to the Yomiuri Shimbun newspaper). May be he is negotiating a deal if he discloses the location of the remaining embezzled bitcoin.

for how much he will remain there, for his entire life? he wasn't a usa citizens? he should be imprisoned there i think..
In Japan I think the absolute max for embezzlement is ten years.

Should've been 1 hour for every satoshi he lost to be honest. Cheesy

then he will need to live 40 times to fulfill Tongue

seriously, from my point of view, anyone who play like he did with the bitcoins of others should pay for that hardly, btw i was wrong, i was thinking that he should be in US jail.

He's in police custody because the Japanese police arrested him again for stealing customer's money and Bitcoins. That gives them the power to hold him in their custody for a few more weeks of questioning. He's facing new charges over spending customer's money hookers too, but I'm not sure if using them is illegal or not in Japan, so he might not be charged with using them.

https://www.cryptocoinsnews.com/mt-goxs-mark-karpeles-spent-money-prostitutes-faces-new-charges/

Quote
New embezzlement charges have been filed against Mark Karpeles for moving $20 million worth of yen in client money to his bank account and spending an unspecified sum on prostitutes, reported Astro Awani in Malaysia. Karpeles already faces fraud charges for the disappearance of hundreds of millions of dollars worth of the virtual currency from Mt. Gox, the now defunct Tokyo-based exchange.Mt. Gox

Citing Yomiuri, a Japanese newspaper, Astro Awani reported Karpeles spent an unspecified sum on prostitutes while the Jiji Press news agency in Japan said the charges involve "several women whom he met at venues that offer sexual services," citing police sources.

...

Authorities arrested him again for allegedly stealing 321 million yen worth of bitcoin. This arrest extended his incarceration. Authorities indicated the new arrest allows police to detain him for several more weeks, which will give them more time to question him about the demise of Mt. Gox.
