Ethereum is a platform, ether is in fact a currency. Why are you claiming it's not? Ethereum is a decent platform, there are definitely others out there with better tech (neo, ada, eos etc.). What the others do not have is the Ethereum Enterprise Alliance. A network of devs, promoters, businesses that work together towards mass adoption. It's why eth is no 2 right now. It might change with eos, though. That is if they decide to put a part of the gross amounts they received in the ICO towards creating a similar alliance for developing the ecosystem.

Anyway, here it is in plain and simple terms: Ethereum has value, and will continue to increase in value, because it is changing the world. As a platform, decentralized applications are consistently being built on it and these all contribute to it's adoption as an online currency used by all apps.

With the idea that smart-contract platforms could break open trillion dollar markets the valuation isn't completely ridiculous. It might be early however and there are some decent alternatives.
