Gamblers were seen as irresponsible people in my town few years ago. Parents usually warn their children never to indulge in gambling or associate with people who gamble. However, a lot has changed recently as gambling has become one of the biggest business here. As a result of that, societal perception has also improved as many testimonies of life-changing wins from gambling has emerged.

I don't know if this is only happening in my area or is a general trend, hence the reason I created this post. Let's know what people think about gamblers and how well the gambling business is faring in your area.

it is absolutely normal probable at any latitude of the world!
simply because the story of a gambler who got ruined makes much more noise and not that of hundreds maybe tons of people who bet as a normal hobby and don't waste their economy in few bets.

if you don't like this "perception" there is a simple trick: don't talk about your hobby to anyone, whether you win or lose Wink and continue to play!

There are always some negative connotation when it comes to gambling and people who gamble. The average Joe see that activity as being irresponsible and addictive.

There are also many religions that do not allow gambling, so if you or the community around you, belong to one of those religions, then this activity will be frowned apon.

I am lucky.... my neighbours do not care to put their nose in my business and even if they did, I would not have given a damn about what they thought about my personal activities.  Wink

"Gamblers were seen as irresponsible ". Ouch, that was pretty harsh as one of those gamblers who still has a control of their selves. Those parents who warn their children are definitely not a gambler. Or they are one of it, but they have a very bad experience. OP, are you talking about offline gambling? That's cool if it is. I thought everything now is turning online?

Though I'm sure that those positive and too good-to-be-true testimonies have came from the gambling owners. That is to entice people to play at them. Maybe gambling had helped improve your country, which is why the people's mood there are now better with it, even though they know that losing is still there and it can occur often.

That is most people perception about gamblers in general and parents in particular.I can understand them as most of the cases they have only learned for gambling through media and usually the media pumps more the bad things rather than those life changing wins. Most parents are so intimidated by different bad stories thrown by the media so it is only normal that they are worried.Life changing events are rare while bad stories are common and that makes gambling look more hazardous rather than beneficial.
I trust myself, I do not judge anyone by what they do and I do not entirely condemn anything that gives money as long as it is lawful. Gambling is lawful so the stereotype of being meted at the person of gambler is not so good, yet, most gamblers call for it with their irresponsible lifestyle off and on gambling platforms/houses. Most gamblers are just so irresponsible, and in some environments, they've known some of them for drunkard and gambling, so you do not entirely blame those who are wary of gambling or associating with gamblers in some communities as the representation of it by those who engage in it is so bad.

But gambling is beyond that, and as I narrated for some communities, other communities are proud of it and do it in the open, while some people will never gamble excessively or let it impair their lives in such a way that they will be calling them irresponsible fellas. Many gamblers are not just so addicted, that is the best way of it, and in some communities, it is their way of life so it never bothers them if you say they gamble or not. Since it is their way of life, they of course would know how to moderate things related to it. Imagine Las Vegas in the US, who can say gambling is an irresponsible act in such an area? It all depends on exposure, the particular environment we talk about and the way we view and approach gambling as well.

Until now, it seems that gamblers are seen as bad by the people in my area because once there was a case of a young gambler who killed a grandmother because he was caught robbing her house, since then in the eyes of the community, gamblers are like a disgrace, where sometimes people act wildly when they are addicted to gambling such as robbing and committing other crimes. Since then, I prefer gambling outside the house rather than gambling openly in public, visible to the people in my neighborhood.

What a terrible news! This is so saddening considering the fact that it's already a senior citizen who was killed. The grandma should have been enjoying her remaining years with her loved ones, only to be killed by some gambling addict that can't control his urge to steal not only money, but life as well. It's so frustrating and maddening that some even get to escape their crimes after bailing, then will just proceed with their old habits.

And this is why we cannot really blame others if they still have a negative perspective on gambling. Gambling either brings the best or worst in people. And most of the time, the dark side is being seen by the majority, which is the reason why gambling is still a taboo talk and it still has a negative connotation.

The percentage of people managing to win life-changing amounts from gambling must be very small, so I don't understand how that can be the reason for a change of perception in society regarding gambling because the percentage didn't change from old times to now, it might be because more people have access to gambling now with all the online gambling platform that provides ease of access to anyone with a smartphone and a cryptocurrency wallet.

People in old times used to go to physical or land-based casinos for gambling, and generally, it feels like it's more difficult to win in a land-based casino than in online gambling, which might be the reason why the perception of people is changing towards it as they can see people are now gambling on their mobile phones and laptops and maybe winning some money now and then.
People in old times? What about those offline casinos that are still in operation? Las Vegas is full of located casinos left and right, people still go to casinos instead of gambling on their smartphones, they tend to enjoy this instead of gambling online, someone one said that it's more fun to see people around you also gambling, and it's bored to gamble online alone.

What I've noticed is that those who are used to going into a casinos to gamble already get used to it, even if you make all data available to them they won't feel alive gambling online in their room, they will prefer to go outside and gamble in the midst of other gamblers.

I don't know where you are from, but where I am from, people still gamble in casino even when they have access to the internet on their smartphones.

Gambling is still looked down upon in religious sentiments in our area but lately a section of young men in the neighborhood have indulged themselves in gambling to such an extent that they have sometimes even shown examples of making huge profits in gambling. Some of them have changed themselves overnight by earning huge money from gambling. So seeing all those changes, some young men and women find themselves anewBegan to discover gambling. Now gambling is not considered a banned game in our area either. Some guardians encourage their children to indulge in gambling. So day by day this banned game is considered as a fixed part of earning which is not socially desirable at all.

If you consider Muslim background, to be honest, people are sort of scared and worried about gambling communities. Especially families think gambling is some sort of unavoidable corruption. But I think this is mainly prejudice. For example sports betting is totally legal in my local, and many people try it every weekend mainly with football or basketball matches. I see noone is thinking a lot about that. People treat it as some sort of entertainment and adding flavor to watching experience of a match.

Well it makes sense, it turns out that the whole society not only looks from the point of view of the negative impact of gambling but also includes what you said that each religion has its own beliefs and regulations, such as the  Muslim religion, one of which you said, as far as I know they have quite strict rules, not only gambling restrictions but such as in terms of food also has restrictions or means there is one food that cannot be consumed and maybe such restrictions also apply in several other religions.

In addition to the limitations of belief according to each religion, on the other hand, obviously in terms of government also has regulations, some are legalized and some are not, and maybe one of them is in your country which allows people to engage in gambling, of course maybe your government has regulated everything or means that it already has a formula to overcome the problem of the impact of gambling by its people so that it has become a very common thing to do by most people on weekends. I think it's actually not a problem if we treat and address  gambling as an activity that is nothing more than entertainment because then maybe they will not be too excessive, unless otherwise.

Well, because my environment is mostly religious people, that's why people's perception of gamblers here is not good enough. They say that gamblers are bad people and are often associated with criminals or sinners who are not religious. I can't blame them for their bad perception of gamblers, because here most of the gamblers are bad, aggressive people, and don't really care about religion, that's why they don't like gamblers, even though not all gamblers are actually like that
I don't blame people who have negative perceptions about gamblers in my area. Some gamblers will make you dislike gambling. Many of them spend their productive time in casinos. These gambling addicts even go to the extent of stealing just to satisfy their uncontrollable urge to gamble. The behaviour of these few people is usually used to judge the majority of responsible gamblers. I am sure that the main religion that forbids gambling is Islam, I have seen many people from other creeds gamble without restrictions.

This depends on what kind of gambling and what kind of people are they because sometimes gamblers are just gamblers and when they become addicted they steal other properties just to fund their addiction. The scariest kind of gamblers are addicted to drugs as well because these are the people who are willing to do anything even if they will go to jail for their actions and it will lead to others getting harmed because of how dangerous they are. Once an elderly woman went to the market at dawn to buy necessary products for her mini restaurant but she got robbed and they took everything from her, thankfully they didn't do anything beyond that because all they wanted was her money. Luckily they got caught and that's when they were asked about it, they said they needed some money to fund their addictions.
Anybody who is addicted to gambling and drugs should seek help immediately because it can ruin a person's life. This set of people can do anything both legal and illegal to satisfy these two dangerous addictions. A drug addict might not be able to gamble responsibly because drugs will make him lose control of his gambling activities.

It is normal for people to view gamblers as people who are irresponsible with themselves and the people around them. This is because many gamblers lose their harmonious life with the people around them and some even commit suicide because they cannot bear the burden. But if gamblers can use gambling as entertainment, they will not be considered irresponsible people. But it is difficult to change people's perceptions because it has been happening for a long time and only a few people can control themselves in gambling. And these few people also do not show that they are gamblers because there has continued to be a perception like that developing in society. They think they shouldn't tell people they are a gambler rather than causing problems for them and those closest to them and the community around them.

Irrespective of what it is in your country or locality, gambling isn't a responsible game. Just because it has become a lucrative business doen't mean it should be allow passage into the system.

If gambling is allowed as a norm in the society, the youths who are yet to attain mental maturity might get ruined in the process and not muc can be done to rememdy the society.

Let gambling be regulated rather than accepted or seen as a societal norm.

People will change their perceptions if it directly brings positive impacts to them. If the gambling industry provides stable employment and income, it's understandable that their perceptions would shift. Everything has two sides, and previously, they might only have seen the negative aspects of gambling without experiencing the positive side, so they had a negative view of it. Traditional thinking always assumes gambling is something wicked, leading the youth astray, into addiction, and financial ruin. That's a correct perspective from the viewpoint of a gambler, but for a worker, this is an industry that can bring in substantial income.

In my area, many people go abroad to work in foreign casinos, and their income is enviable to those back home. However, most people still consider it a somewhat shady and unstable job. If there were a designated area specifically for casino business, I believe local workers would be prioritized, and their perception would change. They would see it not as something sinister but as a place to earn a living and sustain their lives. Therefore, thoughts and opinions will change if the environment around them changes.

I think every person's view of gambling is different, some consider it bad, some consider it as entertainment and some consider it as seeking profit so they can change their lives, and perhaps there are still many who consider gambling bad in society because they see examples people who are addicted to gambling so that their lives are ruined, this is the public perception that causes gambling to be considered bad even though not all gamblers will do the same thing as gambling addicts.

As time goes by, people's perceptions about the badness of gambling will definitely disappear if the environment starts to be filled with people who gamble. I think as long as they can be responsible and don't cause chaos in the community, it won't be a problem, every area will definitely have people who are used to it. gambling so that people consider it normal and there are also other areas where no one gambles so the environment is safe from gamblers, so people's perceptions about gambling definitely remain different to this day.

If you take the whole country or a separate region, there are no significant differences. There are players everywhere, but there are not very many of them in one place, they are distributed, moreover, I don’t notice such people on the streets, they sit in houses or in some establishments. If we take the opinion of people on average, it is a negative attitude. This opinion probably arose due to the fact that bad rumors are spread about the loser through friends, mothers, and families. After one such incident, people who are not familiar with gambling form a negative opinion, even if they have not played a single game. Although, as we know in gambling, people do not always lose, there are also winners.

Each of these children still expects money from their parents. They are very interested in having a lot of money and gambling allows them to get their desires. Recently, a child from my neighbor reportedly won Rp. 25 million in a casino, obviously that's a win that's hard to cover for a kid his age.
It was a big win, and it would surprise his parents when it actually happened.
But speaking of children, how old is your neighbor's child?
If you are a minor, the authority to disburse the prize is only exercised by the parents and children may not be involved.

But if they're already 18+ that's not a problem.
But what kind of gambling do kids under 18+ play so they can win, because it's very rare for that to happen.

I once read an article (but I forgot the source), a father returned the gambling winnings to the casino because his son was underage,
and he could not take the gambling money.
That may be an example of a good parent, but must lose the winning money that his child earns.

This was in early 2000s when people does street gambling, there was even a time police harras youths that engage in street gambling back then, the view it as bad thing because most of them are into smoking and do drugs and even turn to gangsters in the area both civilization has changes our mindset. Even police can't do that today in my states because a gambler in my place has money than a federal worker here, we have some of them that has made a life changing money from gambling and has also help to feed poor people, less privileged and also orphans.

The government has also recognized gambling and are taxing this companies for working here in the country, it will be injustice for anyone to look at someone and say they are irresponsible. In fact, gambling age is between 18 and above in my country and I believe an 18 years old is no longer a kid but an adult and 18 year old should be ready to stand on his own without anyone interfering to what they do, it's not illegal or criminality and the way they view it should be stopped. Gambling is good if done responsibly.

In the past, I recall, people thought of gamblers as irresponsible individuals. If a parent witnessed their son's friend gambling, they would counsel their son to break up with the friend to avoid instilling bad gambling habits in their sons.
This is the most common perception of normal people, or should I say non-gambler people about gamblers. They think us of as irresponsible, undisciplined, money wasters, and a lot of negative descriptions. Well, maybe, because there are a lot of productive thing to do instead of gambling but I guess the time has totally changes where gambling becomes a normal routine for most of people these days, and gambling doesn't mean playing on casino it's all in different forms.

These days, that view has completely changed, with our parents no longer believing that gambling is a negative thing for their above-18 children to engage in because they have heard stories of people who have earned millions from gambling with small-stake bets.
I got my gaming laptop out of crypto casino and yes it is from small bet, my mother know it and was proud of getting it. So yeah, it's been different now compare back then.
