Gambling is such a deed that would definitely earn you your competent and not loyal friends at all. It is quite an obvious thing that the priority list of every human has been set up naturally in this way. He would definitely focus on increasing his bank balance rather than proving his honesty with you. therefore, I agree with your stance of not trusting anyone .these kind of people who will favor you instead of their own personal narrow interests are hard to find and even if you are lucky enough to have one, then what about changes with time!

Every way of quitting or even betting less is another step in the right path .
People usually don't tend to seeing a psychologist for this kind of problems and try to convience themselves that they aren't addicted .
Limiting the activity even for a short period in the day should be helpful since it will give him time to practice other activities and forgetting about gambling and all the bad feelings even for a little while.
