Well, I'm my case I'm holding descent Oyster Pearl PRL today and it is indeed has a massive value when it pumped. That's I'm holding for long term investment because someday I'm gonna make a project that would change my life forever through the help of Cryptocurrency.
Btc, ETH and Ripple are the best for long term now
I know it takes time to wait for a technology to mature, but it does not help if I choose the wrong coin. Where do you see the potential of this coin?
It's hard to tell to see potential of coin. If you wanna see maybe from the ico that pop up the coin. Is the ico or the founder have cooperate with other company that have a strong capital or what discovery that ico reach, or how many product or services that company sell it will effect the price of the coin in the market. The long term waiting coin i think ripple. Because ripple seems a good growth and some store receive ripple as a payment even not much like eth or bitcoin. 
from technology, benefits, roadmap, concept. and there is much more to assess the altcoin you want to buy. I think there are some altcoins that have what I say. try to analyze even more about the many altcoins that are on the market.

There are many potential altcoin but not many of them will be successfull because of the competition.
So thats why i suggest you to invest in top altcoin in coinmarketcap to make your investment safer.

some top coin are may good for if you are able to buy that and you may have the profit but seeing and choosing for what coin are you may able to choose for , yet that better study on it are the best thing to do for watch that coin and make a research this is not easy cause it make time and patience for you so , for you not to be wasted your effort time and money of wrong coin choose to be patience and learn that for.
Ethereum of course, as you can see the market right now. if you think that you're too late, don't worry you can just take the second train.

The coins which price is very stable over the days will make good value in the long term holdings.For example coin lime ethereum the price is constant and slowly increasing when other coins making bumps and dumps.But this coins also will make bumps sometimes.The next coin is NEM which looks like a good potential coin and soon the price will bump so I already made investment on NEMs.
Hard to tell what the future is like for each coin individually but I believe that crypto's blockchain tech will be very useful in the future so I diversify into bitcoin (value), ethereum (dapp), and monero (privacy.)
I believe this is still only the beginning bitcoin will probably hit 100k few years down the line, and all of the top 100 coins will increase in value. The top coins are at the top for a reason and I like these 3 especially so I'm going long hodl. It doesn't hurt to join some bounty/airdrop for new and upcoming coins then holding them for a few months to see how it goes.

I think in terms of cryptocurrencies long-term strategy is not appropriate. I will rather turn to short or medium term strategy. This is due to crypto is fast phase investment highly volatile. Simple snap and value change quickly.
