Theymos was just one of the global moderators then he became one of the admins then all the other admins left and he is the only one who remained so he became the head of Bitcointalk, it's by fate that he become the head of Bitcointalk and so far Bitcointalk is doing great supporting Bitcointalk advancement and enlightenment.
That's always the nature of having a community forum, next time there will be new promoted admin besides cyrus from being a moderator. But since theymos is just like in his 30s i guess we will still see him as the head for several years unless he resign early and pass his reign.

it does mean that Theymos also owns bitcoin.org correct?
That was before, both with cobra, this forum and the bitcoin.org. But now cobra completely have full control the bitcoin.org while theymos have full control the forum host and domain.

I find the succession leading to being the admin of Bitcointalk.org very interesting, Theymos was just one of the global moderators then he became one of the admins then all the other admins left and he is the only one who remained so he became the head of Bitcointalk, it's by fate that he become the head of Bitcointalk and so far Bitcointalk is doing great supporting Bitcointalk advancement and enlightenment.

I believe for security reasons and the continuation of Bitcointalk there's also a succession of who will own the domain in case, I hope the admins will inform us if there are new changes.

It seems that the forum was like the current version when it was hosted on forum.bitcoin.org.
Yeah, it really looks like the same and it's just migrated from another domain to another.

Thanks for the correction, i tried to find the archive page of the forum but no avail, even in the bitcoin.org or in sourceforge.net.
You can see many captures taken from forum.bitcoin.org on wayback machine. Click here.
It seems that the forum was like the current version when it was hosted on forum.bitcoin.org.

This [1] is the only the oldest archive recorded of bitcoin.org but not included the first forum look.
The forum was hosted on forum.bitcoin.org and that's what you should have searched for.

Bitcoin.org still exists, but the forum was moved from forum.bitcoin.org to bitcointalk.org.

it does mean that Theymos also owns bitcoin.org correct?
2011 still is the time when people are building wordpress sites and forums to monetize. i couldn't be sure but i think there was a time in the past when Theymos uses adsense in bitcointalk. which i guess is the reason for moving it from the subforum to a new domain.

Roger Ver was finding issues about this so he created his own forum. but like it was said above, the forum started on sourceforge where Satoshi made his first post.

Do we know the specific reason why this change occurred?
There was a discussion about that among bitcoin developers and they decided to do so.
For more information, read the topic created by theymos. Forum moved to bitcointalk.org

I just made a search and I think low value topics was what caused developers to make such decision.

This is the first time I've heard of this information, and I thought Sirius was the one who bought the domain name.
First topics of the forum created by the admin account (for testing, topic 1, 2) and Satoshi Nakamoto (topic 4). Read them in the staff forum: https://bitcointalk.org/first_topics/

The topic 3 was deleted because it contains information about Satoshi Nakamoto.

In simple words to keep both bitcoin and bitcointalk independent of each other.

Simply put after Satoshi three names took over different domains Sirius, Cobra and theymos.

As of 2020 theymos have full control of bitcointalk.org and if I’m not wrong bitcoin.org is still in control of Cobra.
Theymos announced the domain name update and explained why theymos did it.

Satoshi created both bitcoin.org and this forum, which was originally at bitcoin.org/smf. Later, the forum got its own domain name, but due to this history, bitcoin.org and bitcointalk.org have traditionally been linked, and for quite some time Cøbra and I have together managed the domain names. However, Cøbra has never had much involvement in bitcointalk.org's operation, and I haven't involved myself in bitcoin.org for a couple of years, so the linkage between the two no longer really made made any sense. Therefore, we decided to separate the domains: I no longer have any access to the bitcoin.org domain name, and Cøbra no longer has any access to the bitcointalk.org domain name. The two sites should be viewed as totally separate, which in practice they have been for years.

There will be no changes whatsoever on bitcointalk.org due to this, and I'd assume that the same will be true of bitcoin.org. The bitcoin.org open-source project has been advancing steadily, and I hope and expect that it will continue to do so thanks to the efforts of its contributors.

Thanks to Cøbra for handling much of bitcointalk.org's domain-name-related work in the past.

Before bitcointalk.org creation, the forum was hosted on forum.bitcoin.org

Read the old post made by theymos, for more information.

The forum was originally located at bitcoin.org/smf, then forum.bitcoin.org (hence the redirect), and finally bitcointalk.org.

Thanks! Wink

Similar transition happened with bitcoin core project (wallet software) now the bitcoincoin core is hosted over https://bitcoincore.org/ and Bitcoin.org is suggesting many wallets and among those one is biticoincore.

In short bitcointalk.org is for discussion and rich history around bitcoin. No need to link it to bitcoin.org anyway.

Bitcoin.org is now more like an information site about “Bitcoin”.

And Bitcoincore about open source project maintaining bitcoin client software.

Another curiosity, which I found in this research I did, is that in October 2011, there were already more than 40,000 members registered on the forum. Incredible what was accomplished in 2 years.

I did not know about that post of theymos but now I know it, thanks.

Theymos mentioned about it again in 2020 when the owner of forum domain separated from bitcoin.org domain. No cross relationship with Cobra after that.

I am going to update Bitcointalk's important historic changes as I see some new information from you.

It was mentioned on the thread you link it is sourceforge.net[1], although it's not a domain, it's like you can create a forum using the sourceforge.net website, which is the very first bitcoin forum.
As stated by Satoshi in that topic, the sourceforge.net domain was used before creation of the new forum.
Note that Satoshi made that topic on November 22, 2009 and bitcointalk.org didn't exist on that date.

Satoshi created the forum on forum.bitcoin.org and that's now hosted on bitcointalk.org

The domain bitcointalk.org was registered for the first time on 2011-06-24. Right now 12 Years 4 Month 3 Days.
The first record on the Wayback Machine is on July 10, 2011: https://web.archive.org/web/20110701000000*/bitcointalk.org

But, the topic Welcome to the new Bitcoin forum! created by satoshi dated November 22, 2009.

I ask, what was the domain used before bitcointalk.org?
