Nothing.

It will be left untouched if the solar super storm would happen (let's hope not). Without the internet, that would be basically a forced hodl of our Bitcoin, and that's a good thing to avoid panic selling, though it could be still a disadvantage for some people. Not just Bitcoin, the majority of the society will become useless without the internet, so let's hope we can figure something that could prevent it from stopping our internet just in case.

While browsing through social media, I came across an article that mentioned Solar superstorms could 'wipe out the internet' for weeks or months, scientist says. Will the loss of internet connectivity for weeks or months affect the value of cryptocurrencies such as Bitcoin? What will be the outcome?

Source: https://www.foxweather.com/earth-space/solar-storm-wipe-out-internet

I don't think it's going to be realistic that the whole internet is being wiped out for months. If that was really the case then the world would be doomed and the price of Bitcoin would be our least concerned. So many companies and workers rely upon the internet for their daily work. Just look at the millions of people working remotely, without the internet that wouldn't be possible anymore. It would lead to a surge in lay offs and company bankruptcies and the government would need to step in. Since most governments are already close to 100% debt to GdP levels this would also lead to countries going bankrupt. Stock markets would panic and the same happens to crypto market, but if you don't need to touch your investment portfolio the drop in value shouldn't affect you that much. Once the internet returns the world should normalize again and return eventually to the pre crisis levels. The longterm value of Bitcoin shouldn't be affected that much.

I don't think it will affect the price of Bitcoin but it will affect the circulation of BTC since no one can buy and sell for the time that there's no internet until it is restored. If no one can buy and sell then the supply and demand won't change. The people who use will be affected since they can't use Bitcoin and the money they have invested in BTC will be stuck for a while and will have to use Fiat alone for a while until it is resolved.

I wonder, since solar storms move as fast as light, how can we see them and alert earthlings in time? Because even if you are in space and near the sun, by the time you can detect the storm which would be through getting hit by it, then any signal you try to send back to earth would have the same speed as the storm itself, so your signal and the storm would arrive to earth at the same time. Or does the sun announces that it's going to release such storms before it does release them?

The Internet has become life in most people and most transactions. Scientists will surely take action to prevent its breakdown otherwise,

scientists dont take action.. its the IT admin in businesses that take action.
its the IT admin that needs to convince their CEO to keep a stockpile of replacements to use in an emergency. usually the problems stem from CEO's wanting to budget and cost cut.

The Internet has become life in most people and most transactions. Scientists will surely take action to prevent its breakdown otherwise, it is useless to detect it if they do nothing at least have some backup to keep the internet running. The impact of this is huge and all means of online businesses and transactions will stop, that is even worse than just thinking about Bitcoin because we can still hold them but for those who are reliant on the internet for daily transactions, that is truly difficult for them to survive.

well this is a phenomenon that will affect everyone so no one’s really gonna be able to manipulate or control the market unless of course scientists can create something that could prevent the internet from being unusable just hoping that it’s something everyone can use and not only a privilege

Solar storms are a phenomenon that can cause and this phenomenon will cause electricity and internet outages. So if the internet around the world goes down, we will only face a temporary disruption in Bitcoin, but we will most likely face other problems if that happens because electricity and internet are essential needs for all humanity and even then they will not last long.
And our Bitcoins will remain on the blockchain and once the electricity and internet come back on and some nodes start up and we can use them again as usual. So in my opinion there is no problem and there is no need to be afraid, because this phenomenon is only temporary. Grin
We don't know and haven't experienced the situation with the solar storm disaster. If so, maybe there is a way to anticipate so that the internet network is not fatally damaged, even if it is temporary. because this disaster will impact the whole world, everyone is worried about the money they save in various online wallets. I've seen world conspiracy opinion videos like now (everyone is led to depend on electricity, the internet, everything is easy to access)
Based on the report it has happened before in 1859 (Carrington Event) and it affected the telegram operations and even led to the electrocution of some telegram workers. This could be indeed a very terrible condition and I am concerned about the Bitcoin space because I have an interest in it. I know it will affect other more important sectors like defense and health systems. However, the Bitcoin space will be less affected because it is decentralized and technologically advanced.

But I am glad that the Solar superstorm would give Earth's inhabitants 18-24 hours' notice in advance so satellites can be backed up or put in safe mode. But I don't want to experience such an event because it could lead to a global economic meltdown.
It certainly has a big impact, whether it is a chain in any field, it will cause major damage, because now everything depends on technology and networks to shorten time. If it had happened, perhaps the government would not have remained silent in anticipating a solar storm disaster because of this effect. Yes, of course for the crypto world it is a part of being a savior for storing data or money which can be guaranteed from the current modern era.

the worst possibility that a solar superstorm could wipe out the internet would affect the price of bitcoin globally due to the inability of people to be able to carry out transactions and various other things on bitcoin. this may have a domino effect on other cryptocurrencies, which will impact the global crypto market very significantly. i didn't expect that something like that would happen because it would be like the end of the world for the market and there would be a lot of people affected by this.

hopefully the government or space agency can provide a solution regarding this because the possibility that a solar superstorm could wipe out the internet is a problem that cannot be considered trivial because it will be related to many things.

Well, solar storms usually only affect one side or a section of the earth... not the whole planet. So the military and scientist usually have "protected" equipment that they can use to detect these solar spikes, before it reach earth.

You can also build a very basic Faraday cage to offer some protection against solar storms like this. In any way, if this happens.... Bitcoin might have a better chance to survive than your average Bank or ATM or pay point at your local shop, because it is decentralized all over the planet.  Wink

Everyone will be affected since we are in the digital age now. We can't live without the internet; people will panic, and yet the bank could not provide withdrawals as it's on a system basis. So it's important that we stock the necessary supplies in case this would happen, as our money in the bank might not be accessible even through offline or actual visits due to the high demand.

But let's hope it will not last long, as even one day, lots of things could already happen since our world moves fast already, and the "no internet" would kill that movement. We will literally be back in the old days without the internet.

I will also take a break from bitcointalk if it would happen, i mean everyone of us.  Sad

Bitcoin cannot be used if there is no internet, if bitcoin cannot be used then the price of bitcoin will not be affected much because everyone will be out of internet so no one can buy bitcoins and no one can sell bitcoins. If there is no buying or selling then the market is more likely to remain unchanged. But it seems to me that it is not possible that any country or nation will shut down the internet system because if the internet system is shut down the whole cyber system of a country will be broken and that country will suffer huge financial losses. If they feel the need to make such a decision then I think they must think of alternatives.
No that's not true. There are couple of ways you can transfer Bitcoin without internet connection.

  • SMS-Based Transactions
  • Satellite Transactions
  • QR Codes and Offline Wallets
  • Mesh Networks

Having no internet connection might slow down Bitcoin but I swear it can't stop Bitcoin no matter what happen.

Bro, worry less about the bitcoin price and be more concerned about the more adverse effects of this apparent solar superstorm. First and foremost bitcoin's gonna be the last of our worries when shit hits the fan and we couldn't contact people, let alone use ATMs to cash out our money, or remit money from across the planet, not to mention medical systems and hospitals that are very reliant nowadays to the internet and the access to technology. Just imagine the utter chaos that this will cause. Keep in mind as well that this is going to last a long while, and until we get the internet back to its current tippy-top shape we're gonna have to say goodbye to bitcoin and cryptocurrencies for the meantime.

Yeah, i have heard this one too and i dont know if this one would be true or some another internet thing that we do have today which not to taken seriously
but if this one would really be that true then losing internet wont really be just that focusing on what would happen to Bitcoin but rather on what would be happening into those industries
who are really that totally depending on Internet?

Come in mind that in todays era or years on which most of things relies on internet. Data transfers and communication is really that heavily relying with it. On the time that
there's an absence when it comes to internet connection then this is something that will disrupt and slow down basic operations on what this world had. Frankly speaking even people who do
love social media would really be pissed out on having no internet for a month.

Cant really even imagine on having none on a single day on which you would really be punching up the wall or banging your head because of boredom.
Relate? This is how human beings are already that too attached into internet nowadays.

This will not happen because the scientists just take an estimate and do a pridiction that maybe this will happen. Firstly it will not happen but let's suppose it happens then there are no worries. We are in 2023 not in the 90s when everything was done through cables, the internet system was now passing through a signal and it is not possible that the storm will destroy the whole world's internet system, maybe it will come in some countries. If it comes into the whole world and there is a full shutdown then I don't think that it will do any damage to the cryptocurrency. The worst it will do to Bitcoin is to stop the mining process. The price will not be changed and will remain the same if no selling or buying occurs then how it will make changes in the prices?

Solar superstorms messing up the internet is pretty crazy to think about.  Makes me a little anxious too.  For stuff like Bitcoin, it could really change things.  But Bitcoin's value wouldn't actually change much since no one could use it without the internet.  So you couldn't buy or sell it either. And  like others said though, if we had solar superstorms bad enough to knock out the internet for weeks, Bitcoin would be the least of our worries.  Wed have much bigger problems to deal with.

Thanks for sharing this news, because I was not aware of this incident that took place before, but Artice did not mention what happened back then. I think there was no internet back in time, maybe that's why.

What do you mean, what happened then? For God's sake, it was 1859! Not only was there no internet, but there was also no electricity as we know it today. Nikola Tesla was born in 1856. Wink

Thanks for sharing this news, because I was not aware of this incident that took place before, but Artice did not mention what happened back then. I think there was no internet back in time, maybe that's why. But this whole thing of outages of electricity is a real threat to the whole country. Because, other than BTC or mining, almost every sector depends on the internet, and if the internet is gone, then every aspect of life will be disturbed.

If the internet is out for a temporary period, then the BTC price will remain where it is now because its price totally depends on demand and supply. When the internet is out, no one can demand or supply the BTC, so there will be no change in its price.

This topic has been created before, but in that topic there was no mention of such a solar superstorm but instead just an imagination, which I think comes to reality. I hope Scientist will be proved wrong on this one too, and if they aren't, then they should come up with some plan.

Day by day every country in the world is progressing towards development. This means that internet usage will not be stopped in any country. Because people are moving forward now through the internet. Bitcoin is not possible to work without internet. If the internet ever goes down. The work of Bitcoin will be stopped for the time being. No other country's government will want the internet to be shut down because if the internet is shut down then every country in the world will have economic problems. I think the internet will never shut down forever Maybe the server may experience some problems temporarily.

If such a solar superstorm occurs, the existence of the entire world's fauna will be threatened, there may be problems not only in the Internet but also in everything from electricity. In such a situation, human life will come to a standstill and one kind of disaster will become a global pandemic.
I agree with the report you mentioned that it is said that for the first time in the history of the world, people are becoming completely dependent on the Internet, everything from communication from country to country to economic activities is dependent on it. People will not be prepared for anything like this. So in this case it can be said that yes of course cryptocurrency or Bitcoin will also be affected in a great way. As an example, if I say the state of the world economy after the end of the covid 19 pandemic, the situation will be much the same even if the internet connectivity is lost for a week or a few months.

I think it is high time we had a thread for similar topics that have been discussed on this forum multiple times with users giving duplicate responses.

We have artificial intelligence and other smart machines to tell us what will happen in the future to get humans prepared for any apocalyptic events. So maybe fore the solar superstorm happens, scientists would have built a large dome over the earth(sounds like a dystopian sci fi movie script right?) Well, in the even of such eventualities, the Blockstream Satellite and some other military hardware and software we are not yet aware of , got us covered.

News like these scares me, but I am a big boy and know that even if the internet is gone for weeks or months, the overall network of the BTC blockchain will start right from the point where it stopped due to the internet outage. I was going to say that the wires of the internet are underwater and under construction, so they might not be affected, but satellites might.

But the article you provided says that these wires are also vulnerable and can be fried too due to the reverse current cycle, or whatever they were saying. The point is, we must pray that this does not happen. Even if it does, we should be prepared for it. For example,  if we are totally dependent on our funds, we should withdraw some of them.

And a matter of fact, this outage of internet might solve the issue of ordinals I know they will also be resume with Internet but it might be possible that those who are in Ordinals might leave the idea. Well, I think holidays are coming we should prepare for this outage.

The internet is the most important aspect in Bitcoin transactions, bitcoin transaction data will be sent to miners who need devices with internet support. So without internet access, you cannot buy/sell or exchange bitcoins. If the internet stops working for weeks or months it can be detrimental to Bitcoin miners, exchanges and traders.
Disconnection of internet access can also affect the public's trust in Bitcoin as a store of value and a means of exchange that they have been relying on, lacking the level of trust because they cannot carry out transactions comfortably. As public confidence in Bitcoin declines, the consequences could significantly impact its value.

All possibilities must meet certainty, perhaps none of us can guess when and what date it will start, whether this year or in the future, but 2024 could be a phenomenal year for everyone. Starting from predictions of BTC prices rising to 100K or even higher, the issue of climate change (global warming) and scarcity of food raw materials and so on.

We know the Bitcoin Network relies on an internet connection to operate, and if there is a serious disruption to the global communications infrastructure this could impact transactions and network availability. For us internet users, if you experience this, you should take a break and wait for everything to finish because there is interference with satellite communications, including the internet.

Is bitcoin the only thing that we have to worry about? Or is it because we all want to discover or detect one thing that can go wrong when something negative happens to society? Bitcoin is among the least likely things that will even come to mind.

What do you think will happen to the banking sectors? How many businesses do you think will be able to survive that storm? Have you also imagined the economic implications that might also be caused, the pressure it is going to put on people, people who will lose their jobs, and other negatives that it will bring?

The society will have a much bigger issue and problem to even think of; it will be like sending someone back to 2024, back down to the 1980s, when we had nothing like the internet or any developed technology; it will be like everything wiped out into the air. The world will be in chaos, and that's what people will think of as the best solution to remedy it, not the price of bitcoin.

But, I don't think that would be the case since with all these tech, we'd be able to predict and take necessary measures, Internet is equally important for governments.
For the Governments that even failed to contain COVID-19, and it's after effects to Humanity with all the tech, they had? Nope, I am not confident having my hopes high behind these Governments saving us  Cheesy

But yes, If a solar super storm was to happen. The internet would be the least of our worries. Hell, I have been on a trip to places that were in a middle of a war and internet plus cellphone services were completely cut off.

a solar storm would cause more issue to microchips and copper(metal) cables, not fibre

fibre optic wont "charge and spark"
a solar flare wont do to fibre what it did to 1800's telegram (copper)cables
I just hope your blockchain/coding expertise is not as bad as your astrophysics expertise. Lol a solar storm is not hot enough to melt copper or any metal,

i never said ANYTHING about hot
i never said ANYTHING about melt

it's the charged electromagnetic particles that are dangerous and cause electronic devices overcharge in split seconds
yes i said about over charge

i hope your reading ability is better than your arguments, because your arguments is to say exactly what i said

It's ironic, earth core generates magnetic field to protect us from such dangers, and here we have another type of core protecting us from the dangers of outside world. Or do they?😉
earths ionosphere does help. but when a massive solar storm (happens every few hundred years) is a different story to the low yield energy of flares (every few months-year)
earths ionosphere didnt protect the planet against the solar storm of the 1800's (something i referenced in my last post)

as for thinking devices are safe IF switched off..
well DNS servers are on 24/7. ATM's are on 24/7 most manufacturing robots are 24/7, container ships sail operate most of the time..

the only way to mitigate the risk of having to repair for weeks-to-months of solar storm caused black out damage, would be to take seriously a solar storm warning and purposefully choose to do a human initiated temporary blackout within 8 minutes of a warning to prevent damage of a longer blackout caused by the storm itself

most people will not have the time in 8 minutes to unplug and stop using everything in 8 minutes. meaning there still will be things affected and a sudden need for replacements which if the manufacturing facilities didnt get the warning they would need to rebuild their facilities before they can restart production of a heavier demand.. so its not as simple as "everything will be fine"

I haven't heard of this risk before, but it seems pretty serious. It's great that it's possible to know about it around 18 hours in advance, at least, and that it's a matter of how fast it gets repaired. I've read other articles on the matter, and some scientists believe that it's unlikely, although not impossible. Local blackouts due to power grid problems are more likely.
But if the Internet disappears for less than a month, it's a temporary thing. When there's no Internet, people can't really do much with their coins, so the price remains frozen. And once the Internet starts getting back up, perhaps some trust in digital currencies will be damaged temporarily, and some people will sell their coins, but I don't think it's anything Bitcoin price can't recover from over a few months.

It's clear that Bitcoin transactions would take a big hit if the internet suddenly disappeared. Some might even think that without the internet, Bitcoin transactions can't happen. That's not true.

You can still make Bitcoin transactions without the internet, although it might be a bit trickier than it is now since the internet makes things easier for all of us. All you have to do is broadcast the transaction, and as long as there are miners around, it means the transaction will get processed.

There are some ways you can still send Bitcoin to another wallet using different networks like radio, SMS, or satellite. But, again, because accessing exchange platforms requires the internet, you'd face difficulties selling it online and converting it into FIAT. Since the impact is pretty significant, it's best not to dwell on this worst case scenario.

Another significant impact would be the economy (maybe) reverting to primitive times .

If an event like a solar superstorm should actually happen and wipe out internet I think that bitcoin would be one of the last problems we would think about because the whole world as we know it would change in a very dramatically way. I feel like your question is like asking what is going to happen to bitcoin in case of a nuclear war, first of all we need to think about survival, forget about all the investments.

🖤😏

I just hope your blockchain/coding expertise is not as bad as your astrophysics expertise. Lol a solar storm is not hot enough to melt copper or any metal, it's the charged electromagnetic particles that are dangerous and cause electronic devices overcharge in split seconds, so if any device is unplugged, no harm is done to it since there are no active electromagnetic particles to interact with and cause an overcharge.  Also airplanes have the necessary shields to protect themselves from such incidents.

I have also heard that in space ISS has a special chamber where they put a mixture of sh*t and pi*s inside small bags and cover the walls with it, because it absorbs radiation.

It's ironic, earth core generates magnetic field to protect us from such dangers, and here we have another type of core protecting us from the dangers of outside world. Or do they?😉

In the unlikely happening of such event, all the nodes, miners, and entire data of the blockchain will be destroyed, so no more Bitcoin, unless someone protects an updated backup of the data in a safe chamber.

This has been discussed multiple times already in the past. If such an event occurs, you have far bigger problems than bitcoin/crypto to care about them.

On the other hand, not sure but Blockstream Satellite probably protects us from such an event? https://cointelegraph.com/news/bitcoin-in-space-blockstreams-satellite-network-now-25x-faster

That's right. The blockchain would still exist and operate, to an extent. The question mark is mining. What would happen if all hash rate all of a sudden dropped off? Network transactions might end up in limbo, until it comes back? Or vulnerability to 51% exponentially increases?

The blockstream satellite nodes and other satellite nodes may stay connected though.

I am sure that interplanetary expansion will come before the end stage though.

...and as libert19 said, problems would span much further than bitcoin or other blockchains.

From an economic point of view, the massive potential loss of supply would cause Bitcoin to become even scarcer. The price might reflect higher, if a population still had some and used it.

Who knows ultimately though. Let's just hope it doesn't happen, even though research is pointing that or similar things may happen in the coming decades...

Block stream satellite network to the rescue but what do you expect to happen in the world before Solar superstorm happens? In which I don't believe, but technology is progressing, there will be more ways to use the internet without the internet connection someday, it might sound weird but technology is the fastest growing so far, something will come up.

I used to worry about this too, and sometime I even start thinking of a block chain project that doesn't need the internet to make transaction, but with the way the technology world is advancing this days I know that many solutions will come up.

Also I want you to know that scientists have not predict this event happening in 2025 so do not believe in it that much, how valid this news or rumour is we don't know, you can find the news spreading around the internet but none is saying that this will eventually occur.

I did a quick Google search regarding this one, and I'm a bit afraid of what Solar Storm can do to our internet.
Just imagine those people who are very dependent on the internet. Just imagine those people who are working their living online.

The chances of the Earth being hit by a solar storm is around 1.6 - 12% (based on a Google search) which is kind of high TBH. On the other hand, do we really care about Bitcoin way more than other dangerous things that a solar storm can do to our planet? I mean might forget Bitcoin for a moment, and focus on my safety.

Anyway, 3 words if a solar storm will strike Earth. "It's a DISASTER."... or not depending on how strong it is. Cheesy As for Bitcoin, it will be inaccessible for at least weeks or months, so basically nothing will happen in terms of price... I guess.

the "internet" (fibre optic cables underground/the ocean) are the most safest part of modern infrastructure.. its the devices on te ends that are the problem
and if they go it wont be 'just' the internet.. it would be all things with a power button

the internet connects via fibre optic cables..
a solar storm would cause more issue to microchips and copper(metal) cables, not fibre

fibre optic wont "charge and spark"
a solar flare wont do to fibre what it did to 1800's telegram (copper)cables

the real issue is burning out microchips. devices, machines, chips, electronics can "overcharge"
which if all microchips burned out.. no machine/computer is safe.

because(worse case):
you cant just go to a computer store and buy a new PC/chip, because their pc/chip is also fried
the computer store can't just go to their supplier, because the suppliers distribution warehouse is fried
the distribution warehouse cant just go to their supply factory because their production machines are fried

it would take time for people to manually create a new production machine that then makes new chips to then make new machines en-masse

yes the internet would be dead. but not due to fibre optic cables of the internet. but due to all electric devices  at the gateposts (DNS servers, user computer) cant switch on to even use fibre optics

but if the solar flare is infact big enough to affect chips enough to switch off the internet.. all devices are affected.. no more washing machines, no more tv's, no more games consoles. no more ATM's or bank account clerk PC's, aeroplanes cant fly, container ships cant navigate

it would take time to remake all chips and boards to repair all devices. and distribute it all to all people
fibre optic wont burn, and can be used when devices can be plugged into it

These articles remind me of science fiction movies. We are in the year 2023. The “Internet” is not transmitted through cables. We only have the satellite Internet and radio waves, which can transmit the signal to all countries of the world, regardless of the political circumstances.
If something happens that causes the Internet to stop, then all banking systems will be in trouble and losses will reach trillions of dollars. While the Bitcoin network will not be affected by the fire, at one point in 2013 the network was cut off for several hours.

Blockstream’s work to establish other forms of transmitting the blockchain like using radio frequencies (ai believe that was Blockstream but could be wrong) would finally be useful. I would imagine people would then focus on creating a mesh network with radio waves in order to keep Bitcoin operating. It would be seen by some as an opportunity to strengthen Bitcoin as well as make a ton of money selling suddenly needed hardware.

I have never heard anything about solar superstorm, Infact, this is my first time of reading about this possiblity, and even though I find it hard to believe that anything like this will ever shut down the internet for even a day, not to talk of weeks and months, but let me say that, if for whatever reason, this happens, then I honestly do not think that it will affect bitcoin and cryptocurrencies in general that much, since like other people have said, the internet will be completely shut for everyone, no body will be able to buy or sell any cryptocurrency including bitcoin.

So by this, anytime the internet comes back, we all continue buying and selling from where we stopped, the only way I personally think this will affect bitcoin is that, there is the possiblity that after the internet returns back, there will be a very high selling pressure since many will want to sell some bitcoin and other cryptocurrencies to be able to cover for some transactions that they have done  offline while the internet was shut down.

If that happens, don't just think about bitcoin but first think about our own safety and the chaos of this whole world. The Internet today is likened to water and if you think about it, what would happen if our bodies lacked water for a few days? The same thing would happen to the global economy and the world without the internet, not just bitcoin. But natural disasters are unpredictable so I won't believe any predictions like this, I don't believe this will happen.

If you think it's scary or worrying, when it happens in an instant, the internet disappears all over the world. We know that the internet in this day and age is almost a big help to all people in countries worldwide.

Even more so than Bitcoin and cryptocurrency only survive because of the internet, when the internet disappears, literally speaking, the Bitcoin and crypto industry in this field will be over or stopped. But the question is: how real is it that it will actually happen?

I'm not an expert in this field, but I remember reading somewhere about modern day electric grid being able to survive a solar storm.
I don't know anything about solar superstorms and I don't think that a solar superstorm will hit the planet Earth anytime soon.
If the electric grid gets destroyed by such superstorm everything will be affected, not just Bitcoin. The global economy and the global financial markets would also be affected. I think that the financial markets will be simply closed and nobody would be able to buy and sell for a while.
Everything will get back to normal, after the electric grid gets repaired.

It will depend on the strength of the solar flare, if it is a small one then only the half of the planet that was subject to it will lose all of its electric devices while the other half will remain fine, however if it was an intense one then the whole planet will be affected, however as long as a few nodes survive then that can be enough to bring bitcoin back to life in the case the internet was repaired, however as we have discussed before an event like that will bring us back to the the age before the electricity, the problem is that we do not know how to live like that anymore and we cannot sustain the current population without it, so a massive and widespread famine will happen, and as you can see you will have way more important things to worry about than your bitcoin at that moment.
In the case of a catastrophic solar flare, it's unlikely that a node will survive because how special would that node be for it to survive the solar flare of that scale especially if it's probably just a computer on someone's basement or facility that isn't likely shielded from those solar flares anyway so I don't see how they will be able to survive one. The internet will probably survive if the said solar flare won't hit anything underwater, as far as I know there's already a lot of undersea cable and data storages that's stored in the water but if it will hit it then the internet will definitely go down, this kind of event is something that we can never be really sure until it finally happens.

Everyone will obviously be affected, Crypto in general relies to internet connections so without it, there will be no trading or any activity related to crypto.

But in an case there could be alternative and you might find it on this other threads,

And just like others have said, maybe there are other things that might we should look more important than our bitcoin investment is this so called Solar Superstorm happen.[/list]

you shouldn't be too bothered on things that if it happens, it will affect the whole universe in general. If there is no internet connection, it means that there won't be any activity going on anywhere that required the use on internet connection. There won't be buying or selling of any sort so you have no reason to be afraid of shit as everything in the crypto space will resume as usual once the whole thing has been fixed. What you should be worried about is the effect it will have in the general functioning of the society.

Since the network is connected to the internet, maybe there will be some delay or affection on it but I don't need to think about that. What happens, happens.

The world is going to be affected with these and mostly the governments, oligarchs and majority of the businesses not just in finance will be much affected by this solar superstorm.

I guess I need time to do some reading about this issue because it seems interesting about what's about to come.

Yeah I agree with the above posters. I don’t think this will happen, but if it did, Bitcoin would be the last thing people would worry about. Think about all the banks and how businesses operate.

Most people pay digitally for everything these days, nobody uses cash. So without the internet it wouldn’t be possible to get sales. It would be chaos pretty much. I don’t think this will happen, we hear about these doom day scenarios all the time and they never pan out.

I always found these doomsday scenarios silly because if electronics or the internet are knocked out society has MUUUUUUCH bigger problems than Bitcoin being down. All of society would quickly break down.

Well, if it's powerful enough that could fry industrial transformers, half of the world is f**ked anyways. Lol.  Solar storms carry radioactive particles as well. But the immediate and direct impact would affect which ever side of the earth facing the sun at the moment of arrival. So most of the modern cars would stop working, phones and computers are toast if they are on. Bitcoin would be the least of our concerns then.

You don't have to think about Bitcoin price, the first thing you need to think is big corporations where they use internet to communicate with other group/sector, they also need to communicate to their supplier, distributor and customer, missing one of them will make them struggle, resulting salary cut or the worst is bankruptcy.

If it can't be resolved, the economy in most of country will collapse.

this may not only affect the price of bitcoin, but the market globally, seeing that trading on the global market is very dependent on the internet and disruption of this will certainly cause market disruption which will have an effect on many investment instruments globally

but there's no need to worry too much about this considering that it's only the "worst possibility", so there's no need to panic, it's just that maybe at that time there was an electronic device failure which caused internet disruption for a while, and it doesn't seem to have a significant effect on the market

If it would affect everyone, nothing will happen since nobody will be able to sell. But, I don't think that would be the case since with all these tech, we'd be able to predict and take necessary measures, Internet is equally important for governments.

    From the article linked:

    Quote
Flares, he said, reach Earth in 8 minutes. That sets the clock ticking for the possible magnetic field disruption in 18 to 24 hours.

If we have a warning, every minute counts because you can put satellites in safe mode. You can take transformers off-line from the grid, so they don't fry," Becker said. "So there's things you can do to mitigate the problem.
