I never heard of this song before, nice lyrics, looks like a real gambling poem... I like it.

Quote
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice

Every piece of advice has to be paid, in one or another way! I like this part, it's like that in life. I guess the advice from the song is generally good, learning how to apply them while gambling in moments of excitement is the hard part. Who can do that can hope to become a pro gambler one day whit a nice bankroll and high stakes!

I think it's time to walk once you have reached the limit you set on your own. There's just something that you can do with it if you know when to do it. Believing in something that you need to do is the step that everyone needs to do. It's like knowing your limit and acting on it as well.

Running should be immediately understood once you experienced it. You wouldn't want to reach this point.

There is an old song called "Thee Gambler" that goes like this (snipped part), by Kenny Rogers if I am not wrong.

Knowing when to hold'em, knowing when to foldèm are usually part of your ability, training and experience when playing poker or other games that have some math to it, my question for the forum is how do you know it is the time "to walk away" and I also hope that you never get to the point that you need to know "when to run".

I know this song and i would guess that a lot of people know this song in here because this is an all time classic and even if you are not into country music you probably have heard this song at least once in your life. This song is also used in the trailer of zack snyders movie "army of the dead". I would say that it is obviously very hard to know when to fold your cards and when to hold them because you would need to know what your cards your opponents are having too. So most of the time you know if you should have folded or hold the cards only in retrospect.
Knowing when to walk away is easier in my opinion because you just need discipline to do that. Just set some limits before you start and once you have lost or won a certain amount of money, then it is time to walk away.

You know it's time to walk away from gambling when it has started interfering with your life and decisions such that you now attach more importance to gambling than other activities.

Another pointer to walk away is when you have been in an unending streak of losses such that it has eaten a big hole into your pocket and is now wanting to cause you depression, in this case of you can run away, you run.

It is not easy however for some to just walk away from a thing like gambling especially if they've been intertwined with it for a while, if you fall into that category that even with all the pointers to walk away, and just can't or couldn't, it is best you seek medical help and join a self care group.

Very difficult to walk away, however, I do always question myself when gambling, and most of the time it's effective to me and I simply just walk away because I already have made a good profit, regardless.

I don't want to put myself in the position to lose my winning and then my capital. I'm not really sure if this made sense to others because usually our decision is clouded. But questioning myself most of the time are very effective to grasp what is going on.

im doing wrong when i play gambling because i keep counting my balance and that decides me to continue or to stop.

For me, it's the matter of how many loses have I accumulated in a row, if it's more than what I put into my mind then I know that I will have to walk out of the game before I lose too much. Also, knowing that you have other responsibilities that need those money can help you walk out of the game early or entirely.

Gambler's have this I'll get it or I'll win next time mindset, as long as you have this mindset I don't think walking away is your option, if you are deep into gambling somebody have to walk it for you, in my case I can walk away anytime I'm not deep into gambling and as long as I have other interest that is better than gambling, I can walk anytime.

If you are into gambling and you are a chronic gambler it's almost impossible to walk away, when it comes to walking away it depends on how deep you are into gambling.

You already mentioned it, knowing when to walk or run is part of our ability as we build experience therefore we will just know how to call it once we think it's ready to deploy it.

For when is the specific time to do it, it depends on the game situation so I can't say exactly when as there are lots of instances in strategy-based gambling games.

Anyways, my response has nothing to do with the song but only on dealing with gambling in general.

There's no clear indication now is there? Imo you just know it. It just hits you or something, makes you realize that it's time to well, stop. Heck, most people just stop because they run out of money, but really, if you have enough and just continuously play, there would become a point where you'd just stop and realize that well, it's over (gambling itself). Well if you ever get to the point where you need to run, then you're clearly of the former people where you just keep on gambling, always keeping your money balance close to zero, and clearly, it didn't actually hit you, probably because of adrenaline or something.

One of my favorite folk singer , and also one of my favorite song(actually it is my fathers favorite that become mine also over the time)

My father never gamble in His entire life that is why he is sudden when he finds out that i become on , he keeps telling me that to become a successful gambler is to Know when to stand the table.

for me(or for my father rather) the right time to stand is when you think it is enough , either winning or losing but with your self control and presence of mind , you will never become greedy and will always be contented .

This song doesn't relate poker, it looks like a common song for entire form of gambling. When you don't know when to stop and walk away then it'll be a loss. Maybe a few out of luck profit as they don't stop even after knowing it is the time to walk away.

Taking an opinion poll it'll be clear to see, majority of the gamblers could've turned their life into disaster through gambling and only 5-10% successful out of gambling. This might be out of luck and mathematical understanding.

,
Quote
He said, "Son, I've made a life
Out of readin' people's faces
Knowin' what the cards were
By the way they held their eyes
So if you don't mind my sayin'
I can see you're out of aces
For a taste of your whiskey
I'll give you some advice"

...

Quote
"If you're gonna play the game, boy
You gotta learn to play it right
You've got to know when to hold 'em
Know when to fold 'em
Know when to walk away
And know when to run
You never count your money
When you're sittin' at the table
There'll be time enough for countin'
When the dealin's done

Knowing when to hold'em, knowing when to foldèm are usually part of your ability, training and experience when playing poker or other games that have some math to it, my question for the forum is how do you know it is the time "to walk away" and I also hope that you never get to the point that you need to know "when to run".
