All you need to do is to hold the BTC in your own wallet. Any wallet that gives you access to the private keys is sufficient.
BTW, your buddy got his 40+BCH. He just needs to find out how to access it. There are plenty of articles that describe how to access it. Just search.

I got a buddy who was holding a lot of BTC, 40+ during the Bitcoin cash drop, he was holding it in https://blockchain.info/wallet/#/
He said he got nothing
He asked me to figure out where he needs to move his BTC to get the BItcoin Gold, and if he can still get his Bitcoin Cash?
if anyone knows would be helpfull ty
