If Bitcoin (BTC) is not included in the discussion, then I think the best top 3 coins are Ethereum (ETH), Ripple (XRP), and Stellar (XLM).
I feel that 3 coins are entitled because they have great potential and are very influential on the future of blockchain technology.
We really need their platform. And we can learn from them specifically from their platform, so developers can create better platforms, because we can learn from the mistakes and bugs we find, even adding new features to them.

For me I don't normally invest into top 100 coins, I always look for coins that are still undervalue that is still low in price, but if i am mandate to pick my best three coins from top 20 coins from the coinmarketcap then I will choose Eth, Neo and EOS
Bitcoin and ethereum are the main choices. But just try to pick up those coins which have utility.,
Too many coins are good in the top 20 from coinmarketcap but my favourite and best coins Ethereum, NEO and EOS these three coins are really attractive in crypto market. Ethereum smart contract is attached in many altcoin so this will be best a promising platform. NEO also the same and EOS is quickly reached in top region so these are the best 3 coins But we don't compare Bitcoin because it is always first in the market.

I would suggest not to limit yourself to the top 20 but to the top 100. There are many projects below the top 20 that has great potential and will bring larger profits than if you stuck to the top 20. Stratis, Waves, BAT, ZRX are great projects to get into to. 
Well, of course the eos, I think the potential is very big still would have chosen stellar and can still be bought etc , it's certainly no Ethereum too )
I think the top coin in 2018 will be the EOS, ADA and Ripple. These coins can greatly increase in price while it is quite well-known and popular coins.

In my opinion everything is obvious. Of the top 20, except for bitcoin, I would choose Ethereum, Ethereum classic and EOS. I'm sure many knowledgeable people would choose the same which 3 coins would you buy ( without BTC )

3 coins with the highest potential are:
- NEO (NEO)
- Ripple (XRP)
- Binance Coin (BNB)
(Just my opinion, based on my 2-year experiences in Crypto market)
For me, my top 5 coins of all time are in the following order, BTC, ETH and LTC, NEO and XPR. I think these coins have something quite unique and they will grow to the point which could dominate the market.
For me the best is monero I like the anonymity. Second would be cardano, I believe it will be huge when they start launching smart contract. Third will be litecoin, one of the legacy coins.
