DeFi Coins' popularity, by my opinion, was currently greater above those of Alt Coins. Over the past few years, DeFi Coins has experienced a lot of progress. Personally, We prefer DeFi and recommend DeFi Gold towards you.
Defi is better than altcoins. Defi is a more promising platform in the future, defi makes many parties such as stock brokers, banks and other intermediary services die, I think this is a development of the times and technology because everything will change according to needs and our future is the one who has his own control without third party dependency.
Which DeFi coins are the best? Well, that depends on a lot of factors. Personally I stopped using Ethereum due to gas fees and now I use the exchange Spookyswap on Fantom and Ref Finance on NEAR protocol. Both of these are giving me great farming rewards.
The new platform has great opportunities and risks. I lack the spirit of adventure. I usually look for projects with hot topics or strong communities.

In general, Defi is included in the altcoin scope, only Defi has a different concept from other altcoin. Defi project has been great in the past year, thus encouraging some investor to join the Defi project, because some of the Defi coin that are still in the newcomer category are able to compete with coin that have been circulating in the crypto market for a long time. If you want to dive into the crypto market, try to do some personal research to choose the coin that suits you. But you have to be careful, Don't get caught up in a fake project that will make you lose everything.

My favorite DEFI project is puncake swap and respectively its native token cake. It works on Binance Smart Chain, which means that it doesn’t cost much to run transactions there. I do farming in pool BNB-Cake. Actually, I have to use this already popular defi with comparatively small APRs, because I see that different Defies have lost their popularity, and more people switch to NFT-projects now.

Defi projects are the new trend nowadays but it is still part of altcoins. Now, if you're asking which one is better to invest in, the answer depends of the project itself of the particular alts and defi. There are defi projects that has a potential and we can only find out which one if we conduct an extensive research, the same goes for alts. But some investors prefer to choose alts that are already been here for years because they already prove their worth as a profitable investment. Hence it depends on your choice because alts and defi can be a good choice. 
You will never able to determine which defi that can be called as the best defi. You didn't even meantion the creterias but i believe aave should become the best defi right now as it was also doing a very big expansion to let the institutional investors to get an opportunity to invest in the defi platform. Defi coin can be called as altcoin and there's no difference between defi and altcoin. Defi was an altcoin that was focusing to create a finance platform based on the decentralization. Unlike the centralized system that used by the bank. Defi used automation on its service just like lending, farm, staking and many more.

I think DeFi is one of the best usecase of altcoins, since Bitcoin whitepaper also mentioned that Bitcoin was proposed for Financial tools.
If you ask me what best DeFi at this time, i would mention Omm.Finance, its enable many Financial function to its users, like Lending and Supply, LP Farming, Staking, even its platform age its not reach 30days yet and would growing in the future.

What specific Altcoins you're talking about because DeFi is an Altcoins. I saw a lot of good DeFi project in the past year and until now they are doing good and successfully launch their project despite of having a new trend which is the NFT tokens. If you're into altcoins, make sure you are investing only on good projects, don't forget that there's a lot of fake project, so always careful on choosing where to invest.
Defi is an altcoins and I think you have the wrong question or you still don't know it. then why do you make it different? as long as the coin can still develop well then it will still be the best
in my opinion the defi coins are better than altcoins but only because they have a possibility of rapid growth in value, for now i would exclude those on the eth blockchain and focus on those on bsc, matic, tera blockchain my favorite is cake of pancakeswap

If you're interested in defi projects, then go ahead and do your research about them and choose, but if you do that very research properly you'll discover the sort of risks with scams and hacks you are about to face if you decide to invest in defi, of course there was a lot of hype surrounding it some months back, but it all seemed to go down sooner rather than later, though there are still talks about defi, but not as much as it was when it came on the scene. Having said that, the depreciation of the defi hype can be attributed to the reality of what investors experienced when they put their money into it, the thing is, many of this projects are not long term ones and I'm pretty sure they'll not be popular for too long, if you intend to be a long term investors, just choose eth or Bitcoin, they are more or less your best bet.

Defi coins are still altcoins. You make it sound like it is different from alts whereas they are the same. Defi means decentralized finance and there are coins built in that pattern which are also altcoins. These coins are built in a way that makes them have real use in real life and not some coins built in fantasy without use. I will go for any coin that is a DeFi as against a memecoin any day.
I am not sure what exactly your question is to be honest. If you are asking if Defi projects are the best altcoin projects then i don't think that there is a clear answer for that. Defi has definitely changed the cryptomarket as a whole and i am also pretty sure that defi will not disappear like many other Trends that we had before but it will stay forever as a big pillar for the crypto space. New Trends are still emerging though. At the moment the topics of NFTs and play to earn games are also pretty hot.
Basically meaning there are projects with defi start and there are projects which are non defi as well. So, the question here is basically like "if you had your own project, would you start with defi or regular coin?" basically. Plus for investors as well, "if defi is popular than isn't it easier to invest in defi than coins because defi will get a lot more attention?" type of situation. It works on each side and points so I sort of understand.However, I do not agree that defi is a must for a project to be big, there are many projects which are not defi and they are doing fine as well. We just need a bit more time for coins and less time for defi but they both could be bad or very good.
Right now it's not about DeFI projects anymore, it was big in 2020 but since the beginning of 2021 things have been silent about DeFI projects, the next big thing is NFT projects I suggest you do research on them and choose the popular ones, this is where my 70% profits are coming from

I think the popularity of DeFi Coins is comparatively higher than that of Alt Coins at present. We’ve seen a lot of improvements to DeFi Coins over the last few years. Personally I would like DeFi & suggest of you DeFi Coins.

There are a lot of projects under DeFi, PancakeSwap is one and it had been a great help for easy and fast swaps.
It's like the ICO craze, many ICO's do look good in paper but when soft cap is never reached due to lack of investors or failure in marketing they went down.
Don't get confused though, they are still all altcoins just named differently under a new platform.
