so the black orico 10 port usb 3 hubs from the aliexpress website seem to be arriving with 3A power cords instead of 4A as listed on their product description. but i ordered on july 30th and it arrived today from hong kong.. so thats pretty fast... i bought 2, and have 9 BE's in each one running fine so far...

the RPi uses 5 watts of power and compared to even an efficient laptop it's half the power.
they're not expensive and easy to setup, I used this guide to get me up and running...  https://bitcointalksearch.org/topic/--251675
I 'ssh' into with Putty (or 'ConnectBot' from android device) after setup was completed with a screen and hdmi cable.
miner stats and cgminer settings can also be viewed through a browser (with RPi's IP address)

now that it's setup properly it's a self contained plug and play little miner.  I was also surprised that I could hot plug the erupters.

also I think it can be more reliable than a windows PC.

is there an advantage to using an rpi instead of a pc? just curious

It consumes less power. However, if you anyway have a PC running 24/7, I don't see any advantage.

Would cheap DX 9 port hubs  (+ 10th port on the end) + 20A 5V supply + DC Barrel plugs + 0.5mm^2 wire + some ability to know which is the hot end of the soldering iron meet the needs?

I've just got to get two more barrel jacks as some cable wire, and I could have 36 happily mining in my ghetto cooling duct.  18 are quite happily mining at the moment - I've added one hub of 9 more since I posted the photos.

I've spent US$80 on the hubs and PSU so far, which makes it <$3 per port.  But hey, they could stop working without warning, I suppose.

I'm assuming you got this hub:
http://dx.com/p/10-port-usb-2-0-hub-with-external-power-source-100-240v-ac-adapter-33191

And maybe this power supply:
http://dx.com/p/5v-20a-iron-case-power-supply-silver-ac-110-220v-124499

Couldn't you do this with no soldering by just cutting off the power supply wires from the wall wart at the base, and connecting them to the screw terminals of the power supply?  I guess it depends on whether the wires could handle the extra current.

I will be trying something similar, same USB 10 port hub (bought at local market 2 for $20) and a 5V 8A 40W power supply from China (may take couple weeks to arrive)

5V 8A 40W power supply
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/AC-Converter-Adapter-DC-5V-8A-40W-Power-Supply-Charger-DC-5-5mm-US-EU-UK-AU-plug-/221227202341

10 port USB HUB
http://www.ebay.com.au/itm/New-10-Ports-USB-2-0-HUB-High-Speed-with-Power-Charger-for-PC-Desktop-Notebook-/300932835846

NOTE:
I don't know if you guys are already aware, but with the usb hub above (and probably others are similar), I had to cut the RED (+) wire in the usb cables.  This was because I had 2 of these hubs plugged in the RPi with the stock 2A power supplies and one of the power supplies stopped working which made both usb hubs receive power from one power supply, or possibly the usb hub was drawing power from the RPi power supply also.  If I didn't unplug everything quickly it could have damaged more.  I also read somewhere in this forum that 'power-backing' occurs when using powered usb hubs, where the RPi  receives power from the usb cable and from its own power supply.

this is my setup at moment -  can safely run 3 on each hub with stock power supplies.

ps. the fan on the laptop cooler doesn't do a thing in the ways of cooling the erupters, but the blue LED looks good.  Tongue

I will post back results with the 5V 8A power supply when I receive it from China.

Thanks for the hard work and effort in keeping this thread up to date.

Sadly there is no product other than Anker ond Orico that is stable and utilizes all available ports.

100 ports at $5 per port with all of them functional would be nirvana!!

JUICED 13 PORT HUB only has 5v 3a adapter NOT 9a. havent tested it out yet but should only support 6. got 2 from amazon, they're going back monday

I ordered the BIGTec 10-port hub, figuring it's still pretty cheap even if I only get three usable ports out of it.  But when I opened it, I got a nasty surprise.  Even though the box clearly states a 2A power supply, the label on the adapter inside shows only 1A (1000mA).  It's going back to Amazon on Monday. =(

Updated both these hubs' info in OP with correct informations and "beware" signes in the footnotes.

Strange that Juiced customs support stated that they give 45W to the hub (as per reviews on page 8 of this thread). How do they expect to run 9 2.0 ports on that little power in addition to 4 3.0 ports?!

i thought something was funny when the 10 port hub is $50 on their site but the 13 port supposedly 9a (who's ever seen a 5v 9a wall wart) is only $30? the psu is 85% the cost of the device

the only way to go for packing a whole bunch of stick price effectively is to use open case PSUs... picked up a 5v 20a for $20 which i will try powering 30-35 miners (via 10 port $6 cheap hubs) later next week.

Total cost should be under $2 per port (possibly a little over $1 depending on how many 10 port strips it will power) if it works

Gosh darnit. That's a disappointment to hear. Thanks for the update. Will try regardless, and probably end up keeping it, running 6 sticks, and hosting 7 Anker 10 ports.

Also, I think I bought the last two Orico 10 port hubs available on Amazon. Talk about a first-world-problem, it appears we have a serious shortage of 10 port hubs capable of driving 10 Erupter USB's here in the USA !!!

see I was being nice and left them there!   when I bought mine there was like 13 left and I didn't corner the market!   Shocked

I think this is the one you guys really want.

I want a hub that exists, and has the lowest price per port.  That thing isn't anywhere close to available, and there's no pricing... but I can tell you right now they're going to have a tough time beating the per-port price of mass produced hubs.

In that case I might be sending back my hubs from Juiced Systems as well.

EDIT: Sorry, I didn't read carefully enough.  I thought you were talking about the Juiced Systems 10 port.

I just purchased 2 of the Juiced hubs from amazon.

Going to try them out this week and report back!

Judging by the port spacing in pictures, I am thinking you might only be able to fit about 10 if it ends up powering them with no issues.
