Yeah, I had the same question. If Portugal wins the UEFA Nations League and if he becomes instrumental in the finals, he should be back in contention for the Ballon D'or award again.

Regardless of the fact that Barcelona had a very embarrassing outing at the second leg of the semi finals meeting with Liverpool at anfield and bowed out if the tournament and still lost the final of the copa Del Rey final. Individual no one deserves the award than Leo Messi. He has the highest individual statistics than any other player this season and also has LA liga title so my best pick would be him
It would be very unfair for me if Messi gets the Ballon D'Or because there are still many other candidates who also appear impressive this season. but if Messi gets it I think it's time for UEFA to change regulations on how to determine which player deserves the title of the best player. The only competition that will be looked at is the Champion's League and maybe the Copa America.
So the winner should be from a top team or a player who has been way better than the others.
Messi is the Soulier d'Or, he won La Liga and went in the semis in the CL.
He's the clear favorite.

My shortlist for this would most likely be;
- Lionel Messi (He has garnered 51 goals and 15 assists in 3 competitions, and still has to play Copa Americas. If they win here, it will catapult him to a very high chance to win Ballon D' Or)
- Mo Salah (He has 26 goals and 8 assists in all competitions. Been instrumental in Liverpool despite recent injuries. He is also set to play for Egypt in the AFCON, with Egypt being one of the teams to watch)
- Sadio Mane (Has 26 goals and one assist in all competitions. Equaled his teammate, Salah's goal tally in lesser games. One of Liverpool's key players as well this year along with Salah. Will be playing in AFCON for Senegal)
Now, this is just my top 3 shortlist. Mane and Salah has equal chances of ousting Messi if either one of them wins their conference cups for their respective countries. However, if Lionel Messi wins it for Argentina, he will most likely solidify his position as the top rated player this year for the Ballon D'Or trophy due to him having a fantastic season this year with Barcelona.

The Champions League is almost over, the interesting thing to talk about next is Who will get the Ballon D'or trophy? We know before that the strong candidates for the title are Lionel Messi & De Jong because the Barcelona and Ajax teams have the chance to win Trible but now Barcelona & Ajax are not competing in the UCL Finals. Who do you think the decent players will get the best player title?
I really appreciate de Jong's performance in the Champions league, he can bring Ajax to the semifinals, and that is already very good in my opinion, seeing the material of ajax players is not as good as other teams. but it was too early for De jong to win the Ballon d'or, many other players were more deserving of it. If Mo Salah can bring Liverpool win the champions league, he is be the best candidates for , me, they have top score at Premiere League, managed to bring Liverpool win champions, who else more better than him? I think Ronaldo may get it just because he is getting way older to keep up with this great performances, I mean he can't continue to play like this for the next couple of seasons and we will see some drop. Until that happens dude moved to Juventus, made the team win the league, win the cup, go to champions league quarter finals and played his heart out at his age and still lead the Italian league (famous for less goals scored compared to rest of the European leagues) with god knows how many goals for a long time.

Messi and Ronaldo are absolutely still everyone's favourite, even both were not playing so well in my opinion, but they deserve to be candidates. For this year, I personally wish Salah will win the Ballon d'Or. He played better than most top players in this whole season.
Salah & Mane, these two players have the opportunity to compete for the Ballon D'Or. It would be a good thing if in these 2 years you will get the title not from Ronaldo or Messi.

My take is on van Dijk, potential UCL winner if Liverpool eventually wins UCL this guy had been solid all through the season despite being a defender he also launches attacks and a threat to their opponent.-

Recalled Canavarro of Italy also won a ballon D'or despite being a defender both messi and ronaldo had not been impressive this season thus both do not merit it. Sarah was impressive last season but this season he was a shadow of former self.
Mbappe though is a good goal scorer for PSG but having crashed out of UCL in quarter final by an injury ravaged MAN UTD team was out of contention.
