why do gamblers tend to wait until they have suffered a catastrophic loss or a string of losses before quitting or seeking help?

Because when one takes some initial losses, one does not stop and try to outsmart the casino, chasing those losses.
Also, loss chasing is not something of a single gambling session, there are people who actually keep a record of all the money they have lost to the casino and return to gamble regularly in hopes of turning those numbers to their favor.

They mostly talk about it when they realize there is a problem or when they hit the bottom, otherwise, they still have a miracle recovery in their mind.

gambling can also destroy a person, if it becomes part of a bad habit. as you said, the effects can be fatal, can cause family, financial, psychological and other destruction.
Currently in my country gambling has done more bad than good, most youths take gambling as source of income which they are addicted already, they believe if they keep on trying and they didnt give up they are going to make huge money in a day, lots of them have wasted lot's of money, and they don't really win any reasonable amount of money, they have sold their properties and even involved themselves in illegal activities just to get money to gamble, gamblers are seen as irresponsible people in my society which is wrong, I don't see anything bad in gambling but don't just be addicted.

This is a case of fun turning to misery, gamblers want to achieve two things, and these are having fun and making money, but there are no limits to wanting to make money, that is why so many gamblers end up in misery and losing their money and become frustrated.
Their greed is the main reason why they ended up into that situation, they will only realize it when they are already on that situation, with this, they are left with no choice but to seek help. I have my friend who are very active before in gambling and even encourage me to gamble with him, now after months of being active he came back to me and asking for some advice on how to stop his addiction because he  already lose a lot of money and now drowning into debt, i tried to help him the best way I could but back in my mind, I’m thinking that he choses this path and that is the consequences of being greedy.

In this forum and other forums where gambling is one of the topics of discussion, one of the recurrent topics is people who write about how their gambling addiction has ruined their lives. We usually encounter topics like "Gambling ruined my life,"  "I lost all my life savings to gambling,"  "I gambled away my entire salary," etc. Then they go on to tell a sad tale. It makes me wonder: why do gamblers tend to wait until they have suffered a catastrophic loss or a string of losses before quitting or seeking help?
It is really just that people do always end up on learning when they had fucked up themselves on whatever they are dealing with specially with gambling. You would be having those initial thoughts that you would really be making out huge money or getting rich then this what push you on playing even more or harder which would be resulting into those disaster and ending up on regretting in the end.
Well, regret do always come at the end and if you are that mindful about those probabilities on advance then you would definitely be able to avoid it out since you are really that fully
aware about those potential outcomes.

Simple, it's because most gambling addicts doesn't even know that they are already addicted to it and doesn't even know as well that they are already swimming in deep scary waters which makes them quite hard to help even if they already realized that they needed it, as by that time, it's a bit too late for them as they are too far from anyone's reach.

What they know was that they are just having fun and all until the day that they realize that they are too far away from the intended U-Turn slot and the only remaining way is to face the consequence that they got themselves. But eventually, they will recover but they learned it the hard way.

   -    Gambling is not really good if it has become a vice of a person, because it causes the destruction of a gambler's personality, destruction of the Family and sometimes even causes violence in the end.

But there are other gamblers who are able to control themselves when they know they should stop, others because they are so greedy that they become distracted and destroy themselves.
I think it all boils down to mentality, I discovered that people who read can hardly get addicted to gambling, there are many who are careless gamblers, this are the ones who end up becoming violent and allow themselves to become a tool of destruction to their family, as well as, society at large.

Gambling education is really important, this us where gamblers learn self control and the ability to know when to stop and take a break, many gamblers don't even understand or know what "Gamble responsibly" means, this are the type of people that make gambling look bad in the eyes of the non gambling society.

On the time that you have decided  on touching up gambling then this doesnt really need that learning or whatsoever in correlation to it because even just using your own common sense would really be enough
for you to determine which are the things worth to be done.We arent that dumb on not to see on which one is good and which one is bad.It is really just that people who do ignore out even its already
that too obvious that what they are doing is already that wrong.Blaming people or other things is really that a common behavior not only on gamblers but also in people who do commit out mistakes on what they are doing, they would really be finding someone who would they would be blaming on after the failure that they had committed.

Whatever has become a vice, it is not good, not just in gambling. and usually, anything in excess is not good.

But there are other gamblers who are able to control themselves when they know they should stop, others because they are so greedy that they become distracted and destroy themselves.

Gambling is a game that is very fun, entertaining, and can also be a refreshing medium after full activities from work routines. We can function gambling as a medium for fun, on the sidelines after busy activities. conversely, gambling can also destroy a person, if it becomes part of a bad habit. as you said, the effects can be fatal, can cause family, financial, psychological and other destruction.

Well, to become a gambler who is able to have good self-control. requires awareness, good understanding, as well as responsibility. for it not to happen as we discuss in this thread, gamblers must have some self-control. however, it is not easy. at the very least, one needs to train oneself. So, gamble within the limits you can afford to lose. also, make gambling just part of the fun.

That's problem with the sick people. They usually don't admit that they are sick. They think it is an insult to admit that. How can you treat a person that don't want to be cured? No matter what you say, they will ignore you and do what they are going to do. I've seen this before. It is impossible. Worse yet, they will blame you for everything bad that happened to them even though you were only trying to help. Just leave them alone and hope that they will get smarter by losing.

It's simply because they are too addicted at that time to notice the disaster that they are walking into, and when their face hits the floor, they suddenly become conscious and start realizing what they've lost one by one, and all they've left is regret. It isn't so simple if you put yourself in their shoes.

An addiction such as gambling can be very dangerous for a human being if it crosses its limit which is what happens when people even lend out their homes to borrow money for gambling and they are not basically conscious when they are doing so, but they are blind due to the addiction.

Because they realize how worst their decision can be only after it happens and we may see these and just move on to other ones but if one day it happened to us then it will become a life lesson and we can't forget it simply so sharing their story might give some relief to them and they hope others don't make a mistake they did.

"Too much of anything is good for nothing" which will suits for anything and everything so don't get anything too far.

Not only with gambling, when you get addicted to things in general you begin to see the other negative influence from it, in gambling, everyone has once upon a time got bad experience in it, we all have made some costly mistakes from the past which we have learnt from at the end of it, there are times that we let things we like got over us to the extent that we cannot control ourselves for mederacy in it, such happens when you see some gamblers getting addicted at the expense of their daily lives and activities they got into.
If we can learn from the past and try not to repeat it, we will become better people. Gambling can give us bad experiences and negative influences, so we have to be able to take care of ourselves while playing gambling and after we are done playing gambling because our minds may still think about the defeat we got before. But it's really not worth it if we sacrifice our lives because we often play gambling and lose so much money. And this is why we really have to be able to control the use of money for gambling because many people had experienced losing money when they gambled.

That is where many gamblers tend to make a mistake. They don't know when to stop.
They keep playing and using up all their money in the process of recovering losses but end up losing even more.
Knowing when to stop gambling is a thing which every gambler should learn.
Stopping to gamble at the right time will automatically eliminates most of our losses which we would have encountered.

Because you can never realize the repercussions of your poor decisions until it effectively disrupts your way of living to the point of notice, most gamblers at least. They will carry on with gambling and may even spend their life savings away without care because "next win's gonna cover for it", and the moment they lose all of it, that's when reality hits them. I can tell because I've been with a couple of recovering gambling addicts for a good amount of time and they always tell me that "they couldn't notice until it's too late".

why do gamblers tend to wait until they have suffered a catastrophic loss or a string of losses before quitting or seeking help?
I think it is due to the vicious cycle of loss-chasing the loss-worse loss and the denial of the fact that they are having a problem. Indeed accepting the fact that one has a gambling addiction is embarrassing to their therapist and family. This will not improve for those who mindset has the risk taking attitude, but some people understand their problem quickly and seek help quickly too and such people though rare often save themselves from catastrophic effects.

Often it is the family who have to bear the burden, so possible addicted gamblers should keep that in mind and how much of a shock that would be for them.
That plays a part too. The fact that they downplay their addiction as something ordinary affects their perception of things. That ultimately leads them to gamble more and more until the consequences of their actions become irreversible, like a divorce, massive loss of funds, or whatever eye-opening scenario. Sometimes they even see this as the world fucking them over, basically blaming it to someone else.

To some, Gambling is a game while others see it as a way of livelihood. I've seen people lose out a lot of money in gambling, but never complained about it. The people who complain are people who don't see gambling as a game, but a way of livelihood; Losing games makes them think that they're losing in real life. Such people are like the stage 1 gamblers who play gamble to see quick returns. When their expectations don't play out they go ahead to tell the whole world how they've been unlucky with gambling. Mind you the people who don't complain in gambling most of the times lose out more money than those who do complain. It's all about the psychology and self concept.

While they still have the money and winning, they are still on the cloud 9 and probably forget about the reality that gambling can make you happy once but can make your life worst many times.

They tend to gamble that much without any plan or limitation and the result is very bad, this is the only time for them to realize that they are not doing good and they started  to seek help which I believe its not too late for them to change. Addiction choses no one, gamblers are more prone to this so if you are going to gamble make sure you are responsible and know when to stop.

Some gamblers tell their gambling failure stories to release their distress and disappointment of their wrong decisions while others do it to warn other gamblers about the risks of gambling addiction and the consequences of their wrong actions. Sometimes, we can't notice our mistakes when we are enjoying and we'll only see the negative impact of all our wrong moves when we are already suffering which could also serve as a lesson at the same time.
