I think its because how culture and history have treated females. We think we are superior to them just because of how fairy tales depict them as damsels in distress and females who are always in the house. Female gender are equal to men and what we can do they can also to some extent succeed in it
Women are physically weaker than men, that's why may be some people thinks that. But personally, i don't think like this. Because women nowadays are going far by their own, and they also doing well in every sector.
I do not think that many men think in those way, just those who have warped opinions and are set in their ways. Men and women may have different skill sets generally but that is not to say that one is inferior to the other.

Mainly because before, we rely on brute strength to live. We require strength to wage war, to hunt, to protect and sometimes to connect to a higher being. Now in this criterion, men would be considered prime candidates to do all these. Women on the other hand will be tasked to take care of the men and bear male children because women are physically weak. Today, we don't need strength to live, but we require wits.
