We've heard many stories of athletes being suspended for life for betting on their own games. Yet, despite the risks, some of them keep risking everything. Is it just about the money, or is there something deeper driving them Roll Eyes After all, money can’t replace their sport careers and the excitement they can feel through playing unless they are forced to play. Being remembered as cheaters can destroy their reputation and legacy. But, do they really care...Huh

Perhaps when choosing to gamble, athletes are searching for something that is missing in their lives, such as excitement beyond what they get on the field. While their careers are already full of challenges and adrenaline, maybe some of them found themselves addicted to the added thrill of high stakes. Outside of sports, the asides add a lot more color and texture to the description.

It is also possible that some athletes get bored or feel suffocated by the immense pressure in the wake of expectations that come hand in hand with their careers. Gambling can be an avenue of escapism or a route to feel re-empowered in control in something in their lives. Alternatively, overconfidence or simply believing that they are immune to being caught is also potentially motivating.

But this choice… understanding of the true value of their career and reputation. Money can be earned back, but a good name and legacy are hard to restore after being tarnished by a scandal like this. This can destroy not only their career but also the trust and respect built over a lifetime.

Quite simply, because the pay is not enough.

I don't think betting on your self it's a problem based on my perspective. Unless, you're betting on your opponent since you as the player who play against your opponent can just make the match lose. That's why, is prohibited betting against your enemy.

But, against yourself ? still weird why they prohibited these. Most people/team in the scene with small pay, always doing these (as long not getting caught).
That's something I hadn't considered, and you're absolutely right! Prohibiting betting against the opponent makes much more sense, since you could literally sabotage the entire game on purpose in an attempt to cash out the money from the bet. I've also read stories of players being bribed by the rival team to guarantee their victory. It's astonishing to what lengths some people will go to make money and how unethical some of these acts are.

Anyway, returning to the main topic, betting on yourself isn't impossible; as others already suggested, you can do it through friends or other family members, and you're unlikely to be caught 9/10, which is why some people are willing to take the risk.

The answer is pretty obvious and straight forward, but it's rare to see an athlete be so dumb as to bet on their own games when they often do it through friends or family instead. Bookmakers don't like losing money, so when they see anything suspicious, like a huge bet that wins on an obscure outcome, they will dive much deeper into it and research what happened - they have investigative resources that would easily find out an obvious connection if there was a lot of money at stake. Besides that they will also notice patterns of less unusual behavior, but winning consistently itself is quite unusual when it comes to bookmakers and will stand out like a sore thumb on any account that tries to do this.

greed is the number one course of this sort of thing. I've watched a one time footballer who unfortunately didn't get to climb to the top of his football carreer narrating that he bets on games in the local leagues that aren't all that popular and that the reason why he does that is that he understand things about those teams that the average person doesnt know. People generally believe that they can never be caught and some of them just try to play smart on the system untill they are eventually caught. Some of us might not even know if certain coaches cheats the system by setting up an hidden team that gambles for them without anyone known about it while they sit back and do the basic analysis of the game in addition to some inside information that might have access to.

It appears no as we have the latest case of Sandro Tonali who just got back to Newcastle after being suspended for 1 year because of betting in his own team, not on his own as he plays football which is a collective game but apparently he didn't care much about his career as 1 year out of the fields can make you sassy and baggy to say the least, you are not at the same form you were when you were playing every match of the week and were doing a great job by playing, by doing so he has put his career at a great risk so I don't his motives as he never explained them well yet what I do know is that with this gesture for sure this man does not value a lot his career. If he did, I am sure he would never done that, to bet on the team you play on and to be accused of game fixer and many other things which he obviously didn't accept.

Considering the risks involved in doing this I didn't even know that some athletes would even consider to risk it, but it's crazy because if they are making money as professional athletes what the essence of doing that, well I guess it's not for the money my best guess is they are either doing it for entertainment or to flaunt themselves, whatever the reason is for engaging in this act the consequences might wreck your whole career, this risk isn't worth taking

According to what I have read in the past, not even only the athlete that should not bet, also his coach and family members should not also bet on him or his opponents. I think this rule is there to avoid cheating.

For the athletes that do not listen but trying to cheat, there is no reason behind what he did than trying to cheat and make money from cheating.

Some people are greedy. They see an opportunity to cheat and they are greedy about it and cheat just to make money. This is not only in athletic but also in all other sports. They will think that no one can find out.

Cheating is in human nature.
Based up on my awareness that there would be a certain degree in terms of relatives on whose not really that allowed for you to bet on them on which it will really be that understandable that
they would really be prohibiting it out due to some possible cheating and could really that potentially be able to make money if ever there would really be those possible intents on making themselves lose on a match. Yes, its really that pretty common on having this kind of possibility on which of course only a few get caught and there would be still those athletes who are still doing this but luckily they havent
caught themselves. As for consequences, then its true that it will really be that a heavy one and to those who have done something such as this then they do know the risks but just like as you have said
that human beings are naturally greedy and they would be getting involved on things on which they do know that they could take advantage.

Greed plays an important role in pushing them to break such an important rule. Some people might argue that their pay is not enough, but we have had such an occurrence in the top league. There have been reports that some players in high-paying leagues like England placed bets that were against the rules. These set of players want to live above their means. Family or peer influence can also be a motivational factor. Some players might be encouraged by friends or family members to place unauthorized bets. However, low pay can contribute to engaging in match-fixing or illegal betting. Some leagues pay players peanuts, which might contribute to the decision to gamble illegally.

Betting on yourself can be considered to be cheating because people think the athlete knows about the possible outcome of the game or what he might do in the game. Any athlete who ignores the rules and chooses to bet on himself is prepared to quit his sport. He may win the bet by winning huge at the end of the day but he dont know what the future holds for him. So why risk a suitable long-term path over a quick buck that gambling would give?

I hear some persons talk about urgent needs for money might be a reason for them to take such risk. I disagree because most of these athlete has insurance and of course, they are eligible to some loans based on their contracts. If there is any urgent need and they feel they do not have the money to cover those expenses immediately then they should speak up to their managers a way can be provided for them.

In my opinion gambling scandal athlete is not always about the money but sometimes the habit of those athletes themself because usually they have gambling habit and always be make bets for their own teams so although they know this is forbidden and risky for their career but they seems didn't care about that and still continue to gambling and gambling scandal which very famous is Calciopoli and this scandal involving all elements from referees, clubs and the players and this scandal also makes the popularity of Serie A decline rapidly but the latest scandal which involved the players is Ivan Toney and Sandro Tonali scandal that they have been 10 month ban from competition because these players has been caught to gambling

Not many people are thinking about the future, they're very confident that nothing will happen.
If they're thinking about the huge consequences, they will not do it except they understand the games. Like someone steal $100 Million from other people, but they're only get sentence for 5 years, after 5 years they will become rich with the stolen money.
Money can't replace the sport careers, but money is everything.
Every gambler has his reasons and ways of gambling as well as habits. Though some games require luck , some also require some analysis and different gamblers have their different analysis which may or may not work depending on the situation. You may be thinking those persons are just tossing away their money on bets they know won't play well for them however the fact remains that almost no one will place a bet on a game they are sure is a lost cause. Just like no one likes to lose, same way every one likes to win it just normal human nature.

It's very possible they they either failed in their analysis if there was any or they likely could have placed the bet without making any analysis. All these could contribute to a lost bet.

I guess this is the old way of thought because athletes can bet under high privacy this days with the presence of cryptocurrency gambling a d online gaming alot of those athletes can decide to have an account and bet on their own game, this may be punishable offense if it is done in an open live bet that the record may be in public and even their family members are also prohibited from betting on those games.

I wonder why there be law against self staking for athlets, bit regardless may be the sport officials don't want a double dipping for the player's and athlets so as to be able to manage their level of gambling to avoid addictions.

Have you also think about their allowance or salaries is an athlete or footballer? Don't you think that if they are paying handsomely there is no day such thing could happened but this they are also finding alternatives to survive whereby people start seeing them as cheaters while they involved themselves despite the rules says do not gamble, and it yes I know it's cheating and I am not denying the fact that they are cheating and also breaking the rules of gambling.
Well, it's like you never knew there were several reports of footballers who were found guilty of gambling and were banned from football for months just because they broke the Football Association rules on gambling. Despite their weekly huge payments that some of us can't get for years, they still find a reason to gamble for more money

For the record, about 12 footballers have been banned and fined for betting. Some of the players are the players we know. They are Sandro Tonali, Kieran Trippier, Ivan Toney, Joey Barton, Daniel Sturridge, etc.

You can read and find about others and their offense here

The fact remains that humans are naturally greedy. If they are paid hugely in whatever they do, they will find means to cheat from it. we have some footballers and some politicians as examples.

What if not money? Athletes who bet on themselves certainly have big money behind them, it could be the bookies who know because many athletes do not comply with the rules.
If the money is commensurate with what they do, then it means they will bet on themselves, right? Money is still everything for those athletes whose salaries are small but this can certainly destroy their careers.
Usually athletes like this don't care about the consequences, he sees something big so he can do anything if he just wants to be greedy.

It is human nature to disobey and break rules and just like you see in this forum where plagiarism is heavily frowned against and there are numerous warning about it, there are people still who do it thinking that they will not get caught.
This is the reality. Some may argue that those who commit plagiarism are account farmers with multiple accounts they can replace one with should it be banned, but people also risk their freedom irl by committing crime, risk their entire savings by gambling on it and we are not yet at the top 100 ill-advised things people do.

We cannot know the intentions of people and why players will risk their career to gamble, one things is sure, it does not happen often in top leagues. Those in lower leagues are not paid much and do not have much of a career so the monetary reward is enough to convince them to take the risk. Some are gambling addicts and cannot resist the adrenaline rush they get from staking on games.

It is the same situation that athletes find themselves trying to cheat, thinking that they would not get caught with their actions.

On this issue of athletes betting on themselves or people related to them, betting on them, I think it is something that sports will always be faced with.

Well thats why they are betting on themselves for money what else could it be. Thats the thing about them, probably they got some big rollers who bet on them and promise them big money in return of the win. This may be under the table deals but they will be expose for sure sooner or later. We cant stop those who wanting to do that but its is highly not encourage of course.

I don't remember any athelete did and busted their career but it happened in team sports where they are not allowed to bet on then or even against if I am not wrong cause it manipulate the game results which affects the entire team club and this has been signed when they got their contract. Despite knowing they do and get caught they will be banned so choosing something stupid for very short term pleasure doesn't seems logical.

For the thrills. Getting away while breaking rules and making money in the end I think is exciting for them. This is the kind of thrill that a wingsuit flyer feels when he cheats death upon jumping from the plane down the specific landing area.

Gamblers are always risk-takers, it could be because they need money or just something they can brag about one day. These athletes I'm sure are not thinking of getting caught though and I think because they're going to make it hard to prove.  Regrets only come when they are proven to have violated.
