Hi,
this thread I want to ask you: Why do you, if you do, invest in ICOs?
I see horrible huge amounts of money going to those. What do investors think to get in return?
Mostly it's the same case: ICO starts, much money comes in, you get the coins.
But what if those coins do not get back the initial worth?
Or do you invest because of other reasons?

For example (disclaimer: this is NOT hate!):
Why did trueflip.io get over $4,7 Million?

Thank you for answers!
This can be answer in just one word, Money. Maybe, investors are saying that they are participating ICO just to support a certain project but it is not really the reason. They are participating on it because they can have profit on that. Thats why many investors are taking the risk even  alot of scams can be encounter.

While definitely there is a profit expectation element in ICO investments, many people invest because they like the idea and want to support it.

I guess the main reason why some people invest not just in ICO but to other investment as well is to gain profit or to make a money. If you want to invest in ICO should know the pros and cons before joining and investing in it. One of the advantage of it is it is open in public. Anyone can partake in the cryptocurrency industry. It is also a decentralized orgnization. You just need to know if you can really trust the people in that organization and you can make yourself successful.

Following the ICO of a coin project is very profitable, even when the coin enters an exchange of profits earned to double if the price exceeds the ICO price. If you are interested in joining ICO it may be a good idea to look for a legal coin project and distribute it quickly, it is a pity if your money can settle long in a project.

That's because of the profit that can be gained from ico. People have a chance to buy at the lowest price in ico and sell it with a high price when it has entered the market. That's why many people follow ico.

Have you ever tried to read the white paper provided by ICO management? If you do then you will come to know their pathway towards the specific project they want to achieve with the funds raised at ICO sell. It's like raising the funds first, then offer the products after they are completely developed. This is successful for almost all the ICO and they do give us back what we deserve, the big profits. This is a reward because without us they wouldn't exist.

I invest in the ICO for profit, most of my profits come from ICO projects. Its value is determined by trust and money flow from investors
Its price will hardly fall to its original price because no one wants to lose their money and now they need time to develop a broader market to push its value up

If you have done enough research about the coin and the team and you know if their idea is good and will have a good prospectus then its better to invest in pre ICO. Its like you like the bier business idea (Altcoin) and you are investing in that for the better return in the coming future. It also has the risk associated with it that you may lose out the money if they are not genuine.

It's exciting, but again it can be risky. Shitcoins will continue to exist what can you do.

ICO's are great for newer teams to enter the market, not everybody playing with in the crypto scene has the capital to start up a blockchain based business and a lot of the larger corporations that do aren't necessarily supporting the message of a decentralized system, nor are they really interested in the success of it, just the money that comes with it.

Allowing newer teams to enter the market is great, because it's giving a use to these currencies for once. People don't want to transact in decimals, nor do store owners etc want to have to change prices daily because bitcoins value is rising. E.g using an ethereum token, I can purchase a specific product using a specific coin, so I know the value of my coin will only be effected by people using this, not a fork like has happened to Bitcoin etc.

I think the positives outweigh the risks.

People are investing in ICO's because they can see that they are able to earn with it. And those projects are offering some bonuses with the people like, getting more tokens or coins and when the ICO is done and successful that's the start of selling those tokens at higher price. Most of the ICO's are becoming successful because of the advertisement.
I agree with you, all high value ICOs are made through advertising, especially signature and twitter campaigns, which give developers and investors a better view of the project and promise will develop in the future
Advertising it makes it more attractive and we got more ideas and opinions came from the people who reviews it . Promoting it means they are aware they might critic or getting judged which mean they are serious on making their project successful. Mostly ICO with working products or for more developments it maybe helpful for us to decide where to invest.

Every time you invest in ICO you should see the objectives and opportunities of a project doing ICO. What I mean is how much the bonus is shared for ICO and what the price of ICO coin should be if the ICO price falls to 50% we still have the profit from the bonus.

I think Ethereum is going to succeed.

I think that if Ethereum succeeds, then a non-zero percentage of Ethereum tokens will succeed along with it. The devs certainly have the funds they need.

I look at the market caps these ICO coins debut at, and it's obvious that picking just one homerun will make up for holding multiple scam-bags, if not all of them, so most (not all) of my ETH holdings are through tokens.

I'm one of those people with a good gut for truth anyway. No doubt I've picked a lot of scams/impending failures. But I'm pretty sure there's at least a few winners in there too, and I have a much higher share of the total supply of those than I could ever hope to own for eth, short of a serious free-fall.

Not to mention if I'm not sure about an ICO, there's usually a chance to flip your initial investment back out for some free tokens. But I'm a bit of a gambler so often I don't do that. Usually you can gauge a projects legitimacy initially by assessing the hype. A really hyped up project is at least going to be a short term flip if nothing else.

If the project seems both heavily hyped AND heavily FUDed, that means do your due diligence on THAT one right away.

If this strategy works out for Eth I'll likely employ a similar strategy for EOS and Tezos, investing in ICOs as they come out and accumulating tokens. If it doesn't I'll learn from my mistakes, sell the bags I can, try to scrape together as much of an Eth stash as I can with whats left over, and not make those mistakes on the other smart contract platforms. (you're kidding yourself if you think the market only has room for one).

yes, my take on all this is controversial.

I haven't invested in any yet; however, I do like some of the things I have seen from some Ethereum-based ICOs. Ambrosus is the main one that I have been looking at. Its direction at helping improve food supply chains makes me hope its more like activism with a return than mere investment.

That being said, I think most ICOs that I have seen are for-profit cryptos with little more direction that simply being the new Bitcoin. I would avoid anything that is only trying to be digital money and focus on the ones that are trying to accomplish a specific goal, especially if that goal has real-world application and aligns with your personal beliefs.

Every one invest to make profit. I do not understand what is the meaning of this question, where you already know the answer. Now If any one tells that he invests cause he loves any project, LOLZ. no one even knows what will be happened after 1st August. Where no one can give assurance on BTC , who knows what will be happened to any project? We just can think. We can dream and actually we are doing that. We invest to make bucks, we read whitepaper, we discuss within community, we feel good and we invest.

I invested in some projects. Although I made profit but ICOs are risky. So if you want to invest, do a research. But I prefer free money, as always
Well, when we risk we need to assure as much as possible that we have points to consider when we invest. Investing and Trading is a good source of income when done accordingly, since there are more scammers attacking we better be extra careful. If we dont want to use any of our money then we need to be hard working or work smartly , find a campaign that have potential for success to have you paid.

Ok lets start why do people prefer to start a ico than a crowdfund the answer if you actually have a good plan for any ico you can surely raise good amount of funds and you won't be much liable as your job will be issue tokens and list on exchanges. ICO generally are really profitable there are 2 type of investors one who invest just to earn profit as soon as they hit exchanges second 1/4 of investors prefer this and they hold the funds to share company profits. In crowdfund you need to give the investors a product or service back in ico you can simply issue tokens.

Ico has a very good correlation to support the success of a business project, a good stock offering makes us a leader before the tokens are in the market trading, we automatically become the initial supplier to their success and we get compensation value, I still remember when facebook publish ipo and very Success in a few years, all who become investors will surely enjoy the results doubled, it's similar to ico. Only we need to choose and analyze where is good and where is not worth to invest.
