It seems to me that Ripples or Bitcoins must be useable in the same way that credit cards are to really become mainstream.  People are more interested in their speculative value than their value as a means of transaction at this point, it seems.  There is not enough in place to purchase real goods and services.

There does seem to be potential for abuse, but this is part of their strategy for gaining attention. Because the company will own 25% of the xrp on release they have a huge amount of vested interest in ensuring that the currency takes off. This is what attracts most of their invesors

being issued by a company seems to me to be no different than creating equity to be sold on the stock market - you do well with your company and you are rewarded, as well as the early adopters.  The same seems to be true for bitcoin users.  But then again the stock market has turned into a wealth transfer mechanism and an exit strategy for private investors, so there is obvious potential for abuse....

Ripple is being run by guys from Prosper and Mt. Gox.  It will be a success.

The idea of the company starting out with most of the stock is the same as a publicly-traded company and they have big time silicon valley investors.

I signed up, but found very little info on how the whole thing is going to work, nice interface thou!

when deciding on the legitimacy of some project, the interface is the very last thing to consider.

First, consider the project's stated goals. Second, consider the reputation of the developers. Third, consider the ability of the developers to adequately handle criticisms of the project and to be able to refute problems as raised by the community. Somewhere way, way, way down the line is the interface.

Much like poor spelling, sloppy interfaces don't inspire much confidence so I'd say it is important to an extent.

I'm interested in it. If it picks up steam it has the potential to replace PayPal.

Think of Ripple like an online wallet. You can transfer any type of currency you want into and out of it at hopefully a 0% fee, and hopefully an instant transfer.

I say hopefully because exchangers tied to ripple could have a fee. Given that ACH transfers are kind of the norm and have a 0% fee usually, it should be very much possible to transfer usd from your wallet to your friend, or an online store in the future instantly using Ripple.

All everyone seems to be looking at right now is ripples (an online currency the ripple wallet supports) and comparing ripples to bitcoins. Personally, I could care less about ripples. What I'm interested in is the potential for a fee less open wallet that allows for any type of currency of my choosing.

And sure, I've got my debt card and credit card and paypal, but one online wallet that manages all of them would be really cool.

I agree, great idea if it takes off!

I personally love bitcoin and the idea of the free market in control and guiding it. But I am keeping Ripple on my radar since it has so much interest in the bitcoin community.

Remembering back to the somewhat early bitcoin days, I remember buying at $3, thinking it was worth the gamble...obviously it was (wish I had bought more). I am uneasy with the distribution model of Ripple (corporation giving half away and keeping half), but only skeptical to a point. Corporations like to make money - they are holding half of the Ripple for a reason - I am going to tred lightly, but take the ride with them.

At this point, I don't see much harm in trying to obtain some ripples for free.

Worst case, ripples don't catch on and are worthless.

Best case, they do catch, turn out to be worth something, and early adopters should make out pretty well.

Does anyone know if we can find detailed specs about how it actually works? For Bitcoin, we can know everything if we want including technical details. On Ripple website, they just explain how it is so wonderful but not how it works...

I am looking forward to Ripple, it will increase the liquidity of BTC's which is what we need. I think it will be a major enhancement to the digital currency revolution. I, for one, welcome our Ripple overlords.

I am not going to tell anyone what they should care about.

However why am I going to be using Ripple?

Because my customers will be using Ripple. Grin

It is a handy tool that complements Bitcoins and other currencies.

Everyone gets hung up about the company owning all the XRP's.

XRP is what makes the system work.

I know corporations should give away everything with no profit according to some of your logic.

However that is not the real world.

I will profit with Ripple, so I don't give a damn what other people do.

It's digital currency, without the madness of the non value add of mining.

Sounds like a win in my book.

Where do ripples come from then? Oo

they are created and distributed by the company behind ripple. sounds more like a lose in my opinion.

created by a company?
