Am I missing out on something?

I stopped reading when I found out that all ripples are owned by the company, and they keep 20%, and give out the rest randomly ... sounds like a joke

It's digital currency, without the madness of the non value add of mining.

Sounds like a win in my book.

Where do ripples come from then? Oo

they are created and distributed by the company behind ripple. sounds more like a lose in my opinion.

Think of ripple as of distributed exchange. solution for mtgox lags. this is reason of recent hype. but it is still in alpha (prototype).
And it is also payment system that let's you use ANY currency, which makes it much more useful as payment system than bitcoin is.
