90% Bitcoin
10% litecoin
Check in the alt currency section of bitcointalk every now and then for generous giveaways of other  new alt coins, no need to buy them.

Well I wouldn't buy now, chances are you're going to get better prices during the approach of Jan 31st.
I would invest the majority of your funds in bitcoin and maybe invest 20% over time in altcoins you believe in for the long term.
Just look for altcoins with a promising dev team and community.

With $2000 I'd hunt down and buy one of the coins that was verifiably part of the famous pizza transaction.

Bitcoin only.

Apparently we aren't allowed to demonstrate agreement with an opinion or add emphasis to a fact with a simple "+1".  I've recently had my "+1" posts removed.  Therefore, I'm typing out this message to indicate that I believe the quoted information needs extra emphasis to avoid being unnoticed in the rest of the chatter in this discussion. I may (or may not) also have added bold or underline tags to the text in the quote above to further emphasize the parts that I think are important to understand or be aware of.

I would pick up Litecoins and then trade about 25% of the litcoins for other alt coins, just to have a little diversity.

Litecoin is the easiest buy. The ratio to btc lowers during a crash (like the one we already had) and blows up in a rise. (from 0.18 to .45 LTC/BTC ratio) and has a lot of payment processors coming online soon.

Emunies is going out of beta next week. It really is the (2nd Generation) of digital currency. Instant transactions, anonomous, has an identity system with reputation that will make fraud obsolete, the exchange is built into the client which also acts as a chat and email system (that is encrypted.), the system has an automatic regulation system of low inflation which assists in keeping the price stable (but all emunie accounts collect interest based on this inflation.)

Nxt is a scam. Steer clear. 90% premined.

Then there's Protoshares that has some really good ideas.

Just stay away from any of the new coins who's clearly only a carbon copy of bitcoin. I make an exception to Litecoin because it's so well entrenched as the #2 based on reputation alone.

thats very interesting i will for sure check it out..not sure about the name though. I have 1 emunie?
