I recently had this problem develop with one of my blades in high clock mode. Turns out the lane voltage was tuned too low. After putting a multimeter on it and cranking the lane up to ~1.17-1.2v, it's been fine since.

Within EU you wouldn't pay VAT, outside price would be declared at a few 100$ so low tax. Shipping costs not much.

If a hashing chip dies, it just hashes slower unless it exploded etc. There are 3 components, the ethernet controller, the power delivery board and the hashing board. All 3 are interchangable.
Its not the requirement of a computer which is a problem, its that a computer needs to be on all the time.
A 'blade' is a set of all 3. If one fails, friedcat will send you one out for free.

USBs need *disputed* usb fans to cool
USBs can't exhaust the heat as easily in a farm
USBs take up WAY WAY WAY WAY more space
USBs require a host computer
USBs require a lot of cabling
