Those chinese bricks make A LOT of heat, well never actually seen the bfl ones but I'm going to guess they are only 60% efficient.

Damn that pretty bad. A good 80Plus Gold PSU should serve me well then and save a few $ in electricity costs.

I'm wondering, do you guys recommend a PSU with a single 12V rail for powering fpga boards or it doesn't matter. I saw a good deal on a Antec HCP-750 modular 80 Plus Gold PSU but it has 4 12V rails, which IMHO should still be ok as I can put each group of fpgas on a separate rail, but I just wanted to get the opinion of you folks first.

I have a somewhat unrelated question that I'm hoping some of you already know the answer to. I'd like to know what the efficiency rating is on the power adapters sold with the x6500, icarus and BFL Single fpga boards. How much more efficient is it to use say a 80Plus Gold PSU versus the power bricks sold with these mining boards?

The 8pin pcie cable only has 3 +12v lines.  How many FPGAs would you like to run off those 3 +12s? 
The only other thing to be aware of is the Icarus uses a 2.5/5.5mm barrel plug. Does the rev3 x6500 use a 2.1/5.5 or 2.5/5.5mm plug?

Oh shoot, you're right, the x6500 uses a 2.1/5.5 connector.

Well I'd like to run 4 at the moment (4 x 20 watt). Later on I'll ask you to build a cable to power two bitforce singles.

So for 4 Icarus FPGA boards 1 8-pin PCIE connector should be enough. Could you build me a cable that maxes out one 8-pin PCIE plug so I have some room for future expansion. Since the dual fpga Icarus boards are no longer sold I figure I'd use  the rev3 x6500 boards instead and I also presume that those should work just fine as they switched to using 12v instead of 5v.

Sure, I can make them full length for you.  If they are going to be around 6ft long I would suggest 16AWG for better efficiency.  They would also only be sleeved near the ATX connector around 1ft or so.

The conservative numbers for the 6pin is 75w and 8pin is 150w.  They are over-designed though and can do more as 18AWG can carry a max of 10 Amps per wire so 120w per pair.

I sourced this from Toms Hardware:  The PCI-E connecter has 6 pins. They are not all used for power. For the 6 pin connector, Pins 1 & 3 are 12V & each can carry 8 Amps. Pin 2 by spec is not connected, although some PSU manufacturers do add a 12V line there. Pins 4 & 6 are Com return lines. Pin5 is Com for sensing. Using 2 lines, you get 12V*8A*2= 192Watts, much over the required 75Watts. With an 8 pin PCI-E connector, 2 Com lines are added (4&Cool not a 12V & Com. There, Pins 1,2,3 are 12V, Pin 4 is a Com for the 8 pin connector sensing, Pin 5,7,8 are Com return lines, & pin 6 is for the 6 pin connector sensing. Using that config, 12V*8Amp*3=288 Watts, much over the required 150Watts.

AFAIK the sense pins are not used and are just com return as well.

The consensus was that you could do 1 BFL single per 12V line because of gained efficiency of Gold standard PSU vs. power brick.  Pulls around 73W.
