geforce is better than AMD for this algo?

depends on your goals. AMD 290X gets the most hashrate, but it draws a lot of power.

the nvidia maxwell architecture is much more efficient.
Thanks, are there some "hash table"?

for the AMD cards you can take a look at the claymore GPU miner thread. It has most cards listed with diffrent memory types (elipa/hynix). There might also be a change in favor for AMD with the new line of cards that should be able to match nvidas maxwell architecture in terms of energy efficiency. But I guess we will have to wait and see until someone buys a Fury card and mines some XMR.

Thanks
I appreciate your response.

yeah. most people don't mine monero for profit now. they mine to hold. Think about it - if you could've mined bitcoin with a CPU and a GPU and gotten 3 bitcoin every week, wouldn't you be mad at yourself if you didn't?

thats the timeframe you gotta think with monero. Years.

i wasnt mining for profit i was mining cuz i was interested in investing

If you want to invest, then buy XMR directly, that is cheaper than mining with CPU if you do not undervoltage.

Yeah, the main reason to mine right now is to support the network, because some percentage of the current network hashrate gets free electricity, so you're not going to get a lot of coins that way. Due to this phenomenon, if you want to invest, then the cheapest way is to buy up the coins that the free electricity crowd is constantly selling.

dont cost me anything to mine was simply an investment of time
investing money by buying them is the exact same thing as if i was paying for electricity to mine lol just might cost a lil less
cant assume everyone pays to mine cuz many do not nor does one always need to consider the cheapest method of investment when exploring options
i have many tools for mining including asic and pure GPU rigs plus i7 CPUs all running on free electricity
i was interested in xmr and when i said the comment about profitability i said one key word AND it was clearly a mere afterthought

What is the better way to get around 5k USD value XMR:  buy it at current price (190k) or mine it?

Mine it if you have access to a boatload of free electricity and hardware.

Otherwise buy it.

I have free electricity but no free hardware Smiley

then yeah, buy it. Otherwise you're looking at buying thousands of dollars worth of 290X's in order to get 5k XMR in any reasonable amount of time.

But what if I buy the mining equipment for several k of USD, mine and sell 5k USD value XMR and then:
1. Continue mining XMR or other coin or
2. Sell the mining hardware with 20-30% discount of the original price

Don't get me wrong, I'm strong advocate of increasing the network hashrate. It just depends on what kind of time frame you want to work in.

If you have a time frame of a year, then 15 kh/s will get you 5k XMR (roughly, and this assumes no change in difficulty, and doesn't take into account the decreasing block reward)

15 kh is about 18 R290X AMD cards, which is the highest hashrate card right now, which goes for about 350$. , so thats a GPU cost of $6562 , and that doesn't even include power supplies for these beasts. So it'd probably be around , i dunno, 8k USD.

IF your time frame is less, than the numbers move around.

anyone tried mining with the new AMD cards? Havent found any tests yet that include xmr mining.

Would be great to have some info on how they hash.

XMR GPU mining needs lots of memory access. So it can be faster. Needs confirmation.

You mean memory of GPU or system ram?

GPU memory. Fury has HBM (high bandwidth memory) on the GPU die.
